John D played against New Canaan HS when he was a junior and Will Hanley was a senior. New Canaan won pretty handily 56-35. Staples had a good three point shooter who went to Ithaca and played pretty well up there. The Staples team was 8-13 that year, but he didn't stand out. He certainly does now!
John really developed quite a bit during his senior year, but I would suppose that by then, he had already gone early admission/decision to Rochester.

He's a guy whose numbers will never really explain the full picture of his play (kind of like Tim Edwards from Midd a few years back), and a perfect example of the limitations of PER or other efficiency ratings.  I think most Williams fans still feel most comfortable in a big moment of a big game with the ball in his hands, even despite his struggles from the three point line this year and the occasional effort to thread the needle a bit TOO much ... he'll certainly be missed next season.

That's actually where a +/- for a unit would be a cool thing to have because you could probably see that no matter what combination of players he's playing with, that any unit that contains Nate has a high + rating.  Conversely, any combination of players when he isn't on the floor would have a lower rating and possibly even a negative rating.  Would love to have that by game or overall for the season.

A few minutes from tip here at Midd.

Here's a strange stat for an 11-7 team: Keene is a perfect 8-0 on the road. Hope they pick up their first road L tonight.

No there not.  They lost @ RIC January 12 58-55.

Midd locked in so far, leads Keene, 38-20, at the half.

Not including RIC the teams Keene beat on the road are a combined 35 - 74

I know they have a neutral court loss in New Jersey as well, but I have a hard time seeing how they could've lost 5 times at home.  Springfield, Plattsburgh, Eastern, USM, which team was #5??

I stand corrected on earlier stat. Was given bad info. :)

My halftime report is correct, though.

Midd D stifling the Owls.

Not including RIC the teams Keene beat on the road are a combined 35 - 74 and Middlebury's not including Williams and St. Josephs (not sure who that is) was 67 and 84

Think Midd is playing angry? Up 70-33 w/7:00 left.

Middlebury wins 81-53.

It wasn't as close as the score indicates. :)

Williams 93, Southern Vermont 45.

Following on live stats and it could have been a lot worse actually.  Starters got a quick lead by 8 or 9 so Maker went with the early subs.  They went scoreless and let it get to 16-11 before Maker put the starters back in again and they pushed the lead up 15+ points.  Subs in again - trouble scoring again - starters back in to push the lead.  Then the 3rd time around the lid finally came off the basket and the bench started scoring.  39 bench points, without looking I'm guessing that was the high for the year.  Next up Colby so we'll see if they can keep up the momentum.

Bowdoin 93, Thomas 43

Final score could have been worse as Bowdoin was up big at the half:  45-16.

A good night for the 'CAC in non-conference games.

Last game to report because it took the longest time to finish.  Amherst wins by 9 points in the end.  However, I should wait for Walzy's comments on the game before I make comments.  The game had  one minute and 31 seconds to go and Amherst up by 7 points.  There was a ten minute or more delay as the three refs was seen hunched over looking at the replay of the 2nd half is my guess.  When the game finally was restarted..several seconds were added, one foul by RIC was taken off....going from 7 fouls to 6 fouls...out of a penalty situation and 2 points taken OFF the Amherst score...changing the score from 67 to 65 and the difference down to 5.  The "mistake" was finally described in the after game interview by the RIC coach to watchers on-line.
Cannot remember at this time what Walzy's spread was on the game and will leave it to him to determine if he will make payment.
Teaser facts.....Aaron Toomey scored 30 plus points and dominated the game...going 5-6 from outside the arc....hitting his first 5....only missed one of his foul shots...4 Amherst players scored in double figures in the win.  RIC had pride in its defense.  Coach Walsh of RIC summed it up simply....".Their (Amherst) offense was just better than our defense.  When they score over 70 points, we will not win".   Fewer than 3 teams have scored more than 70 points this season over the Anchormen.....tonight Amherst joined that list.

Old Guy

I thought the Midd-Keene State game might be a so-called "trap" game: after a tough loss, looking ahead a big NESCAC weekend (the dreaded Maine trip - Colby, Bowdoin), talented if "inconsistent" opponent, sparse mid-week crowd for a non-league game. Keene has size (6'10", 6'8", 6'6" frontcourt), quickness, shooters (Mariano, Martin).

Midd played a great first half, ferocious defense. Martin (16 ppg) was shut down by Thompson (it's something of a refrain, isn't it) - 2-7 - four points total, none in the first half.

A 28-point win doesn't require an extended analytical recitation. Quick highlights: Wolfin bounced back with a nice game - 14 points on 6-9 shooting (2-3 from three) and nine assists; Thompson only took four shots but had ten rebounds; Lynch had 14 points in 18 minutes; Kizel was Kizel (one "l") - 14 points, rugged floor game; Roberts was 4-5 from the floor and was a presence at the defensive end - three blocks.

A thoroughly commendable performance from a team that never gives you anything but a great effort. Frosh and sophs got some time: this team will look different next year, but will be a tough out.
