There is an old school saying to the effect that one does not build a reputation by beating up on drunks and old men.

Last game to report because it took the longest time to finish. amh63

Like I used to say to refs (and umps) when I was a h.s. coach - you don't have to be fast, you have to be right.

Williams has played So Vermont, twice! Beat 'em by a total of 78 points. Midd played 'em once - a 36 point win.

I guess my point, Frank, was that Keene State, on the other hand, is not an "old man" or a "drunk."

I'm done, goin' to bed. Seeya in the a.m..

Williams 93, Southern Vermont 45.

Following on live stats and it could have been a lot worse actually.  Starters got a quick lead by 8 or 9 so Maker went with the early subs.  They went scoreless and let it get to 16-11 before Maker put the starters back in again and they pushed the lead up 15+ points.  Subs in again - trouble scoring again - starters back in to push the lead.  Then the 3rd time around the lid finally came off the basket and the bench started scoring.  39 bench points, without looking I'm guessing that was the high for the year.  Next up Colby so we'll see if they can keep up the momentum.

Can that phrase be used in conjunction with a win over Southern Vermont? ;D

I thought the Midd-Keene State game might be a so-called "trap" game: after a tough loss, looking ahead a big NESCAC weekend (the dreaded Maine trip - Colby, Bowdoin), talented if "inconsistent" opponent, sparse mid-week crowd for a non-league game. Keene has size (6'10", 6'8", 6'6" frontcourt), quickness, shooters (Mariano, Martin).

After you lose to basically the same team from the year before (about the only person not on the Keene roster this year is Ollie Hunter) there is no trap game the next year.  They could be playing a game in Singapore 12 hours later, and that shouldn't have been a trap game.

NESCAC / LEC Challenge Spreads

Amherst -10.5
Tufts -23.0
Middlebury -10.0 (O/U: 113.0)
Western Conn -15.5
Southern Maine -20.0
Eastern Conn -1.5

NESCAC will go 3-2 going into that Wes/Eastern game which is basically a toss up. I'll be at the RIC game Tuesday...they always play us tough and actively (especially on defense).

Amherst -10.5 (Amherst Wins 74-65: RIC Covers +1.5*)
Tufts -23.0 (Tufts wins 64-51: UMD Covers +10.0)
Middlebury -10.0 (O/U: 113.0) (Middlebury Wins 81-53: Midd Covers +18.0 Over +21.0)
Western Conn -15.5 (Conn College Wins 91-79: Conn College Covers +27.5)
Southern Maine -20.0 (Southern Maine Wins 70-50: Push Walzy Wins)
Eastern Conn -1.5 (TBD)

Good day for the 'CAC

I gave 7Express a +1. I owe Lefrakenstein a bunch since he went perfect.

All of you doubted the Colby +20 line. This is...not the year of the Mule.

The 3 main guards/forwards that play off the bench for Williams had not scored a single point in 3 games and went scoreless in the first half tonight. They finally broke the dry spell in the 2nd half finishing up with a combined 17 points.  Playing Colby next so they're likely to get more time and hopefully leave the scoring woes behind for good.

The game had  one minute and 31 seconds to go and Amherst up by 7 points.  There was a ten minute or more delay as the three refs was seen hunched over looking at the replay of the 2nd half is my guess.  When the game finally was restarted..several seconds were added, one foul by RIC was taken off....going from 7 fouls to 6 fouls...out of a penalty situation and 2 points taken OFF the Amherst score...changing the score from 67 to 65 and the difference down to 5.
Cannot remember at this time what Walzy's spread was on the game and will leave it to him to determine if he will make payment.

I haven't seen anything like that ever at a basketball game. It wasn't like the free throws happened just a few seconds ago. Kalema hit both during a one and one about 3 game minutes earlier (and many baskets and possessions earlier). For betting purposes, the final score is the final score (ie. see recent boxing results), but I am not sure how you can take two points off the board so much later after the fact in a close game.

After the ten minute delay when the points were deducted, the refs explained the situation, then quickly blew the whistle and handed the ball to RIC. The Amherst coaches were saying "wait, if that foul three minutes ago was really RIC's 6th foul and not the 7th and you are taking our 2 points off the board, then wouldn't it at least be our ball from the foul??" That seemed like good logic to me...then again, I've never seen any ref take points off the scoreboard so why not continue down made up land and do whatever you want.

We did get one crucial makeup call with 40 seconds left up 5 on what looked like a turnover that turned into two free throws to go up 7. Outcome unaffected. I am not worked up, but it was amazing to see.

Oh, and Aaron Toomey had 34pts on 9-12 fga, 5-6 3ptfga, 11-12 ft, with 8 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals against the #3 defense in the country.

I guess if you're going to play a full 40 minutes that's a pretty good line. Although I'm partial to Mayer's 22 pts on 10-11 fga, 12 rebs, 4 asts in 15 mins.   Not so inefficient and selfish  :P

Ypsi: In my opinion it most certainly does. Williams' bullying of Southern Vermont does not reflect well on Williams, and if for some strange reason Williams is proud of it, then Williams has a character defect which needs work.

toad22

Nobody bullied Southern Vt. They played the game because they wanted to. Williams played the game because they needed a 24th game. I will admit that a winless season is embarrassing and painful. I played on a Williams team the went 2-17. That was almost as bad.

Do the referees that work Amherst games ever get a call right?  ???
