Ancient - I think N1 already answered it but I'll throw this out there as well.  If you look at Gamble and Mayer - Mayer spreads the floor and allows the open lane for players to get cuts to the basket and Gamble doesn't do that.  On 2 pointers only removing the two players - Williams shot 5% better than NCC and I think that speaks directly to the Ephs are getting a lot of great looks around that basket that are uncontested because the opposing center is standing 15 ft away from the basket on defense.

And Middlebury won it as well.  Good to start the NESCAC part of the season off with a W.  From the brief write ups available it seems that Sinnickson is healthy and playing well.  Also good to see. vandy74

Zip it, Vandy. Not even a hint of gloating. We have two with the Ephs today - and are flipping a coin (drawing names out of a hat?) to see who pitches. Lots of baseball left with the Ephs today. The Ephs come here for two weeks (Midd only has a one-week break) - I wonder if that's too long, that's a long road trip.

Early a.m. cloud cover in Tucson - I want my money back. It's fun to watch Sinnickson, 6'5", run down balls in centerfield. Merryman is not with the hardball team, taking a break between seasons. Any other NESCAC basketball/baseball doubles? Or other sports, the throwbacks, guys who when basketball season ends, can't wait to get out and do somethings else intensely athletic?

Who were the basketball/baseball pros - Gene Conley, Dave Debusschere, Gary Roggenburk, Bob Gibson (Globetrotters)

Gloating wasn't my intent, Old Guy, nor was jinxing them.  :-\   Norwich at home on Wednesday.  I returned to the area just barely too late to see the 06 and 07 teams play.  Just a couple more basketball/baseball pros to add as a Celtics fan.  Danny Ainge and Chuck Connors.  Also Fergie Jenkins played some with the Globetrotters.

Not a follower of pro baseball to add much to present topic.  Vandy's inputs did remove some cobwebs.   In the early 70's, would watch some local playground hoops...that drew pro talent.  Saw a front court player with red hair that I recognized.  Played BB for the wolfpack of NCS, a local product.  I cannot remember his name but recall that he went on to play pro ball as a baseball reliever.  His length/size on the mound a desired quality for pitching....leverage leading to speed...as I recognize it.  How many of the pro's mentioned here were pitchers?   At Amherst, many of the pitchers are tall.  If they are lefties, even better.

Only one of the pitchers enshrined in Cooperstown was less than 6 feet tall - a kewpie doll to the person who can name him. Hint: He was nicknamed the Heater from Van Meter, among other sobriquets.

Pud Galvin? Baseball's first PED user. 5'8 hall of famer.

Edit: nope. Bob feller. When I was younger I used to take pride in knowing all the baseball HOFers. Pud is a HOFer and was 5'8 though, so Feller was not the only sub-6'0 HOF pitcher

magicman

The Heater from Van Meter was Bob Feller (aka Rapid Robert and Bullet Bob) but I think he was exactly 6 feet tall. Maybe he was 5'11" and like they do for so many basketball players they added that illusional inch to his height. ???

frank uible

I stand corrected. The new information will be squirreled for future use. Monkey testosterone?

Found a website which claims that there are 16 HOF pitchers who were less than 6' - without naming names. If that is exactly or approximately true, then I have been grossly misinformed on the subject - like many other subjects.

Several Tufts folks have hyped Hunter Sabety, but the other front court recruit, Drew Madsen, looks more athletic at nearly the same size.  Some examples:

Even in high school, he gets well above the rim.  With Allen Williamson, Workman, and Sean Hoffmann graduating, he may help fill the NESCAC dunk deficit next year (although I'm not sure we will ever again see anyone like Williamson in NESCAC).

Amh63- I think the N.C. State pitcher/hoopster was Tim Stoddard.  6-8 beast played with David Thompson, Monte Towe and Tom Burleson (sp?) when they beat UCLA in the '74 semis.

I expect Dylan Sinnickson to help close that deficit, as well.

Middhoops..you got it!....as previously posted....not good with names but remember features.  Thanks!   What a team....had a very short guard in Towne and a true 7 footer in "Tall Tom"...my nickname for him.   Then the 6' 4" leaper that was rumored to be able to pluck a coin from the Top of the backboard!

Plucking coins off the top of backboards actually originated with Earl Manigault, the Harlem legend known as The Goat.

I love this anecdote:

When Kareem Abdul-Jabbar finished his career with the Los Angeles Lakers and had his number retired at the Los Angeles Forum, he was asked who was the greatest player he had played with or against. After a long silence, he answered, "That would have to be 'The Goat'".

When I was growing I got to see Earl Manigault play in NY , He was a 6'2" guard who was amazing and dunked over everyone. There was another playground legend, Helicopter Knowles, who could also sky and was an amazing player
