Has anybody else heard the rumor that Tufts is seriously considering moving to the UAA, and at the same time dropping football? It makes some sense to me. I have no idea if the UAA is interested in Tufts. Tufts certainly has no interest in football.

Jumpshot...can not dispute the success of Williams' chase after the "Cup".  My congrats to Williams !
I do notice your negative view of Amherst's attempts to follow the Eph's approach...beginning with the lower case "a" when referring to the LJ's. Do not worry...Amherst does not field enough teams...no varsity crew teams, ski teams, and no wrestling team to gain points...With a smaller enrollment than Williams and Middlebury...Amherst  will just have to win CAC  titles in the the remaining sports...at least the Little Three. :)
Toad...need to check to see if the Jumbo coaches are looking for jobs.   Have you posted your  thoughts on the football board?   A big donor just gave Tufts a new facility...a former football player.Still with a new Prez and completion of a Capital Campaign, anything is possible.

I haven't heard that. I'll ask around here, people who should know. It would make sense, in many respects. Tufts has twice as many undergrads (4600) as other NESCAC schools and is a true university (dental & vet schools, Fletcher - 11 doctoral programs and 17 Masters programs: 660 M.A students; 320 Ph.D candidates). It looks more like those UAA places than a NESCAC school. Yet it has played a NESCAC schedule for a long time.

To respond (simplistically) to amh63's query: I have always felt you'll never be bad with good guards, but it's hard to be great without a good big man (or two).

Pat Coleman

People have been talking about Tufts and MIT as fits for the UAA as long as I've been covering D-III but as far as I know it has never been anything more than talk.

Impressive-sounding future Eph.  Sounds like he will likely play only baseball in college, but also stars in basketball and soccer at high school:

Though this is the BB board, it is the board that has the most posters and readers...so I wanted to point out and congrate the 900 conference athletes that made the Spring All academic honors...including over 100 students that had also made all NESCAC teams.  need a grade point average of 3.35.   Smart kids...higher average than me!
Congrats to Tufts, Colby and Amherst that lead the pack with over 90 plus students...Tufts.. with well over 100!

"Smart kids," true enough, congratulations indeed, but the numbers are significantly attributable to grade inflation.

Old Guy.....Old school, high standards, tough grader. :).  Actually, agreed with you on the inflation point but it is hard to quantify among schools, departments, profs, etc.  For me, my grades went up in grad school...more serious/mature?   My kids all beat me in grade averages...smart mother in part..and still had fun.

Why even say congradulations if you're going to add the remark at the end? It doesn't sound particularly genuine to me.

Maybe because he's a professor at one of these NESCAC schools, and he knows of what he speaks?

Fine, then say it without the congratulations if it is really disingenuous.

Guys?...it is just the start of summer ....no need to get at each others' throats and be so uptight.  Me, I am about to give up gardening chores with all the outdoor critters around.  With all the storms, I'm thinking of designing an ARK....maybe using a 3-D printer to built it.

Isn't it relative grades that are important? Of course, grades have wildly inflated over the years, but it doesn't matter much if everyone's grades have moved up at the same rate. The kids winning the academic awards are still the ones near the top.

Unless the minimum GPA for All-Academic has increased accordingly, this logic is flawed. As far back as the NESCAC website shows (2001), the minimum GPA has not increased. Thus, the award is not calibrated to relative success.

If the GPA discussion can somehow negate the national championship by Amherst this past year then I'm all for it.  If not, then I'm not interested.
