Good luck, NESCAC - hope we meet.

That article only highlights 27 players, what about the other 17 recruits in the program?  :P

QuoteNice article on Tom Palleschi

Sorry to hear that such a talented young man won't be able to play the game he loves.  On the other hand, I'm so grateful that they caught this before it threatened his life.  Best of luck to him.

Bowdoin announced that their former HBC has passed away.

Bowdoin's first opponent, Western Connecticut State, has just posted their updated roster.  The Colonials have added 3 FY guards and it looks like they've lost a big man.  They now only have 3 players listed at 6'-5" or taller (2 at 6'-5" and 1 at 6'-6").  This could make it a little more difficult for them to match up with Bowdoin inside.

Along those same lines, I was looking at the Midd-Alvernia matchup yesterday and was very surprised to see how small Alvernia was.  I will be very interested to see how they match up against a much bigger Midd team.  Just don't see how a team that small can stay up in the Top 25 given they will have to go up against bigger opponents every night.

Alvernia's roster: 5'9, 5'10, 5'11, 5'11, 5'11, 6'0, 6'1, 6'2, 6'2, 6'3, 6'4, 6'4, 6'5, 6'6

Typically at that size you might see guys with a lot more bulk to make up for a lack of height but there's 3 guys listed at 200 lbs and that's it.  The Midd bigs should have a huge advantage down low.

We've been thinking along similar lines. The concern is, Midd used to always count on Pete Lynch's post game to abuse smaller teams. The big guys left now either lack consistent offensive games and limit themselves (Roberts, Churchill), or play better in space and thus don't necessarily capitalize on smaller defenders (Sinnickson, Daley). It's going to be a really interesting early test because the question of whether this team has consistent post scorers looms large over the season in general.

I see that the SID at Amherst was troubled by Middhoops complaint....and actually changed the weight of several players, in particular Sanderson who is now listed at 215 vice 185.  Chatted a bit with Sanderson and he did say he had picked up some weight...maybe so height?.
The height and weight of players on rosters have always been an area of amusement to me.  Especially at Amherst.
Going back when Toomey, Killian, and other seniors were frosh....most all frosh lost an inch by their sophmore year.....Killian, Gach, Toomey being the most obvious.  Logan dropped 10 pounds and it was confirmed by his mom!
I see that Madz's nephew got back the inch he lost his FY. :)  Glad that Williams got a new scale.
Amherst plays Brooklyn College away on Sat.  Need to call my sons about the game since they both are living in Brooklyn Heights now.  Need an live report from them.  They owe me!

They got 50% of his measurements right this year and I'm sure he's not going to argue with that since he gained back his height.  As an added bonus they even spelled his hometown right this year.

They should list everyone at 5'8 just to mess with opposing coaches ...

I know what you mean.   One year my son's high school team had to submit a team photo for holiday tournament that they were traveling to.  Since the other teams were from different states and didn't know us, the coach had all four bigs (6'-5" to 6'-9") kneel in the front row so the other coaches wouldn't know our size.  Crazy stuff.....

The height of a team doesn't seem to me to be very important. When the game was on the line, the best recent team at Williams (2010), featured a team with no one over 6'5". It is the quality of the players, and the team, that makes the difference.

Mr. Ypsi

Once in a blue moon, heights get adjusted the other direction.  When Earl Boykins (who later played in the NBA for over a decade) was a freshman at EMU, he was listed as 5'8".  As a sophomore, he was 5'7".  By junior year he was 5'5".  (That became his listed height the rest of his career, though some of us who taught him at EMU swear 5'3" would be more accurate!)  When the coach was asked about his shrinkage, he replied "Until he proved how good he was, you think I was gonna risk my career admitting I recruited a midget?!" ;D

I thought the building was going to collapse from the reaction the first time he dunked in a game! ;)

Toad....you are most correct.  Just as the argument/discussion that we all return to.... who is the most important player to have in building a winning team in college, in Div3....a PG or a tall center.  I am interested in the size of a player, his "length", his hops and tend to forget his BB IQ, his court sight, his leadership, passing. etc.
Mr Y...enjoyed your post, remember the player well.
I grew up in D.C. and watched and played basketball on the blacktop.  My high school team beat a high school team with a 6'9" player and a 6'10" player and two guards that would later become H.S. All-Americans.  My HS team had a front court with the tallest player being 6'4" and the other 6'3"..both football players.  The 6'10" player was John Thompson, the legendary coach of Georgetown.  I remember the game well. to remind myself that it is how you play the team game and not the size of the players.
I guess we all know that size isn't the only factor...but it is fun to discuss in times like now....awaiting the first game, awaiting the season with many unknowns such as the defensive abilities of the team.

There are some SIDs who are now completely skipping the coaches and getting the info from the athletic trainers when the athletes check in and have their basic physicals. Something I actually think all SIDs should do so there aren't any games being played and many of the numbers we can trust.

That said... I heard a recent story of a player's parent wanting the SID to change his son's height and weight... adding three or four inches and about 30 pounds. Going from shorter than me to eye level... not sure the outcome... but I had to laugh. Reminds me of the height for Jeff Gibbs at Otterbein many years ago - ah memories.

Which high school did you attend that beat the great Carroll team? I know they lost to Cardozo in the '58 City Title game before going on a 55-game winning streak.
