Panthernation

Nice job Panthernation.  Hard to argue with any of your awards.  The only surprise, to me, and it's doubly a surprise because of the team he plays for, is the omission of Sinnickson.  I'd probably include him over Madlinger, although it's a close call.  Otherwise, the only reason any of those awards should turn out differently is either a ridiculous break-out performance in the NESCAC tourney, or a general reluctance by coaches to award hardware to first-year players.

We are under the impression that NESCAC tournament play does not affect award allocation. We were told that voting takes place before Saturday. If anyone knows for sure, it would be helpful to know. Sinnickson had a great season. His unbelievably hard to defend outside shooting, and repertoire of moves attacking the basket, were often the only thing carrying the Middlebury offense this season. But there are a lot of really good players in the league, and Madlinger's defense, difficult to quantify but clear every time we watched Bowdoin play, seemed good enough to make up the offensive deficit. Neither player's team factored into the decision; that would be a pretty lame way to decide these things.

I have always been kind of amused by the "amHerst" gag.  I have some Williams friends (secret's out I guess) who like to type "amHerst" is emails to me or to exaggerate the pronunciation of the "H" when talking to me about my alma mater . .. . . . as if I care!  While I have naturally used the correct pronunciation for quite some time now, before I got to campus freshman year, I called it "amHerst" just like everybody else.  No big deal.  Bottom line is this, pronounce "Amherst" any way you like.

You are totally in the minority here. Wish I could show you the hate mail from Amherst fans from the year we did the sectional up there.

Hate mail over the pronunciation of AmHHHerst?? Really??  Coach Reilly's take on the LJs is making more and more sense.  Call the Panthers Middle bury, berry or whatever, doubt Pat would get any hate mail from VT on that.

I have no doubt you get hate mail from Amherst fans, Pat. (All of which is undoubtedly quite well written.)  I just have hard time believing that any meaningful number of Amherst alums would take time out of their day ruling the world to bother you about a pronunciation mistake that is perfectly common and understandable (after all, it is not like calling "Sinnickson" "Snickerson" -- though I often have Snickers on my mind as well. They are delicious! And filling!).

Oh well.  At least tell me that these letters included other complaints!

Got buried with doing chores and other things.....see that the "H" thing appeared in another post.  Do not think it is from any posters here...truly...Pat C.  Correct guys!?

Having said that, I have to post here a story that may relate to LemonJ's earlier post.
LemonJ....YOU are on to something about the CANES!  +K to you.    At one of my reunions, I took a visit to the Frost Library rare books area that had been enlarged/rearranged.  The speaker mentioned that there were a number of Class canes found.....stored away.  It was a puzzle why they were there and what was the purpose of the canes...other then they were of different designs...assigned to different classes.  The Class cane story was never clarified to my satisfaction as to the tradition/purpose.  Even when the "tradition" of giving a class cane to the members of the graduation class was revived...no history was mentioned.  I believe the cane style has been the same over the last few years.
Envious, I suggested that canes be given as a reunion present instead of say a shirt, etc.  Did not happen :'( Hey...people my age need canes for getting around.   Mad, I refused the class gift of a copy of a famous print of the college.    In truth..I was not mad....I have an original. :)

nescac1, I agree 110% with these thoughts.  Nice job, PN.

The only thing I would add, as I mentioned before, is my feeling that some coaches might (unfairly in my view) penalize Sinnickson for leaving the team earlier in the season.  Since he wouldn't otherwise be a lock to make an All-NESCAC team, we may never know.  Still, while I know he struggled with his shot last weekend, for my money he put together an All-NESCAC caliber year this year.

PN, as always, I have zero inside information, but I have always been under the impression that All NESCAC votes are cast after the conference tournament has been completed.  I think this view is certainly consistent with certain voting decisions in years past where a tournament surprise was rewarded with All-Conference recognition.  For instance, there is simply no way Coach Paulsen could have won CoY in 2007 prior to Williams upsetting Amherst in the Championship Game.  I could be wrong though.  After all, I thought there was simply no way Coach Brown could win CoY in 2012 over Coach Hixon!

I do remember them being reasonably written. :)

Not current posters, anyway. Also, this was eight years ago. Now it's in my points of emphasis to any broadcasters we might have covering an Amherst game so I don't think it's come up since. :)

We asked a former coach, who said the voting takes place before the tournament.

I made it! I made it!  AS05 is "featured" in the latest installment of The Road to Salem.  One of the happiest days of my life.

To be honest, with great looks and a bit of hard work, I always knew this was a possibility, but until it actually happens you don't fully appreciate what an accomplishment it is.  So many people I have to thank.  First, I want to thank my parents, for always supporting me.  I want to thank the Producers for taking a chance on a kid with a dream.  And, of course, I have to thank the Academy.  I definitely could not have done this without the Academy.

Bucket and the Dean of This n That have cameo roles, but I think everyone who watches this episode will agree that the highlight is provided by the striking gentlemen in a grey Amherst fleece sitting a few rows above the Amherst bench.  I am going to work on my skills so maybe, if the stars align, I can get a speaking role back at LeFrak in a couple of weeks.

Seriously though, great job as always (but next time consider including more crowd shots--they are the real ratings-getter).

I'll take your word for it, AmherstStudent05.  I'm not sure I saw you but it was hard to make out the guy with Charlize Theron on his lap licking his ear.  Considering the sections of the bleachers the camera found I made an appearance as well.  Blue cap and sweatshirt, slightly to the Middlebury side of midcourt, halfway up behind the scorer's table.  Personally, I prefer to keep a low profile but considering your ambitions to the contrary I hope you know that 3 on-screen appearances will require you to join SAG.  That seems to be what you have in mind anyway.

I just had the chance to catch Joey Kizel's interview on Hoopsville's Thursday night edition.  Speaking as one of many who have enjoyed the privilege of seeing this young man play basketball these last four seasons it was nice to see him recognized in that way.  It was also good to hear someone not officially associated with Panther basketball pronounce Kizel correctly even if Dave did follow it up with a mention of Dylan "Snickerson".  Putting the accent on the second syllable I can understand, at least. ::)  But it was a fun piece, on Joey's birthday no less.

Good luck to a fine group of seniors who will play their last game at Pepin tomorrow afternoon.

To be honest... I have no recollection of how I said Dylan's last name... the entire day is a blur.

I do remember enjoying the conversation with Joey... he certainly has achieved more in the classroom then I could ever have imagined for myself. Bravo.

I was really just having some fun with you Dave.  I cut people in your line of work a lot of slack anyway.  Doing one interview after another and keeping track of it all at a hectic pace.  I couldn't do it.  I have trouble just remembering names, let alone how to pronounce them.  Besides, anyone who has been following Sinnickson's play on any venue not connected to Middlebury has good reason to think it's multiple choice.  I really enjoyed the Kizel interview.  Thanks for that and the great job you always do.

Was a great segment. Kudos to you and Joey.
