See that the weather has taken its toll on some games in NYC area.  Should check the schedules for the Friday games for those traveling.

P'Bear....maybe too much James Bond reruns? :)  A note that you may enjoy.  Was watching several Amherst lacrosse games on line...yes slow day for me too!  Anyway, Amherst was playing WNE on one of its turf fields...holding its home opener on Pratt field for a Sat. Game.  The NSN announcer...maybe an ice hockey announcer was doing fine with the play by play.....except that he referred to the WNE players as the Polar Bears!...in the first half. I thought...OK...another Polar Bear mascot...not knowing better.  In the second half, he referred to the visitors as the Golden Bears!  Colors more appropriate.
Got me thinking...as the NCAA games start today for a few and Friday for most...how many posters here know the mascots of the teams in the CAC sectionals/ sites.  Know SJF is the Cardinals...not the bird...and of course Sage is the Gators...and WPI is the Engineers?...like MIT.
Oh yes, weather report...the games in my area and the mid-Atlantic region will be impacted.  Seems NE and games in up state nY less so.  Be careful travelers.   Me, will be watching on- line...hoping for Amherst to advance to a possible Sweet 16 site at RMC...slightly north of Richmond, Va.

amh63,

I guess you're thinking because the name of the School is St. John Fisher you think those Cardinals are the kind that are dressed in red robes and wear those round red caps on their head. Here's a link to some school t-shirts. Their mascot is indeed the bird. Just like my favorite team. ;D

St. John Fisher's best player is a 6'7" sophomore F/C named Keegan Ryan. He was the Empire 8 Player of the Year, only the third time in conference history that a sophomore has won the POTY award, and the first time a player from St. John Fisher has done it. Keegan was heavily recruited by a number of schools including my Cardinals here at Plattsburgh State. Keegan went to high school just 4 miles from Plattsburgh State and only a Par 5 distance from where my house is (well maybe 3 par 5's). I thought it was kind of ironic that he didn't choose to go with the Plattsburgh State Cardinals but yet ended up as a Cardinal....right bird, wrong part of the state. He's only going to get better.

Here's a link to their website and a story about Ryan:  It takes a while to load, so give it a few minutes.

Magicman...thanks for the info/correction. +K   Interesting that SJF's star player is the same size and plays the same position as the Sage star front court player.   If Amherst meets SJF, expect Coach Hixon to figure who will match up.
A poster suggested a place to visit in Rochester...the Museum of Play.  I rather go to the game southeast of Rochester.
My daughter encouraged me to come up......me, cannot get out of the driveway yet.  Chaos around the D.C area due to ice.
A surprising start of the post-season.  Wash U......playing at home was beaten by DePauw.....a team that got hot during its tourny after a 9-9 regular season record.  Watched about half of the game.  Announcer noted that Wash U loses came from being behind at the half...interesting.   Wesleyan won our conference; playing well late in the season....it's mascot is a Cardinal...the bird.

Happy to see Mike Maker and his Marist Red Foxes upset 6th-seeded Quinnipiac in the opening round of the MAAC tournament.

It's a great day for NESCAC Basketball, friends!! I think we can all unite in our support today.
We've done a lot of combing the internet and talking to coaches trying to put out the most comprehensive previews that we can. If you have some time, take a look. The last two will be on the way later today:
Amherst - Sage

Just guessing but there are probably more Cardinals in the NCAA tournament this year than any other mascot. The Catholic Cardinals, the St. John Fisher Cardinals and the Wesleyan Cardinals. Alas..the Plattsburgh State Cardinals were the only Redbirds I wanted to see dancing.  :(

No Cardinal Egan, though - R.I.P., for those concerned.

I was a resident of NYC before/during/after the events of Sept. 11, and although I don't "follow" him in any particular sense, he was a rock (pun intended).

St Vincent is much better than I expected.  Long, quick, athletic - not huge on actual skills though.  Bates is definitely the better team.  If they can keep away from turnovers, they'll be fine.

Amherst wrapping things up over Sage.  The story of the game is obviously Reid Berman.  Kid just went to the bench with 28 points on 11-14 shooting (4-6 from 3) and 6 assists.  To put in perspective just how unexpected this scoring output was, coming into tonight, Berman's three best scoring efforts on the season SUMMED to 31 points!  This really did come out of nowhere.

Green still struggled mightily from the field (though he did nice work on the glass), but his shot looked much better (even if they didn't fall).  Conklin continues his fine run.  18 points on 9-11 shooting in extended action with George plagued with foul trouble most of the game.  Lately he just always seems to be in the right place at the right time.

Looking forward to tomorrow's game!

Sage couldn't spell defense if you gave them all of the letters but the D.

This Amherst team is an interesting one. I don't think that they go too deep but the rotation is baffling.  Dawson barely sees the court - Green struggles with his shooting - and Berman looks like Toomey.   The Jeffs really controlled the boards and Sage looked like they had never seen a team this talented with their weak schedule.   Win is a win.

Cards are now out.  NESCAC 2-1 so far

Bates putting it away here.  They don't look like world beaters, but they're playing well.  Up 10, two minutes to go.

Congrats to Amherst. Berman finally looked for his own shot and was still  the pass first, unselfish point guard that they need. Conklin is finally getting a chance, he's smart and tough and very efficient. He obviously learned from his year on the bench and at practice against some of the most talented players in D1 at Arizona. He should have been getting PT earlier, maybe he was injured.  I like their chances in the next game, probably against St. John Fisher despite it being at their building.
