Jack Simonds, a previously announced Bowdoin signee from Falmouth, ME is a finalist for Maine's Mr. Basketball honors. On the women's side, Hannah Graham of Presque Isle is a finalist for Miss Basketball.

It's not "Ms. Basketball"?

If you want to be proper... it's Miss. Ms. is used for widows or divorces. But in this day in age, Miss has been passed over in favor of Ms.

No "Ms." is definitely not meant for widows and divorcees. It's meant for women who wish to be neutral to the rest of the world with regard to their marital status.

I have never heard the widows or divorcee stuff before.  No mention of widows or divorce in these easily found links.  I remember it becoming a feminist issue with Gloria Steinem which apparently the NY Times does as well.

According to this one, some divorced woman still prefer Mrs.

Sorry guys. Just reported what I read: Miss Basketball. Should have been politically correct and reported Miss and/or Ms.

I'm all for not offending people, but these are high schoolers we're talking about; I think using Miss is a safe bet. Congrats to the young man and young woman.

Just poking and having fun.  Nothing serious.  Slow news day.
Best wishes to Trinity and Bates to leave it all on the floor with a great effort,  and the winner hopefully moving on to Salem.

Anybody fill out a bracket (men or women) in the D3photo contest?

Looks like they are not scoring it this year - or am I missing something?

Old Guy

I loved it when Middlebury was going to the NCAAs year after year, 2008-13 (alas, we took it for granted - e.g. "The Road to Salem"); usually we joined the Ephs and Jeffs in the post-season. I have to admit I find this Bates-Trinity representation of NESCAC refreshing. I hope it's a good game - Go 'Cats.

About gender matters: I am annoyed when college women's teams are accorded the prefix "Lady" when they are referred to, as in the "Lady Catamounts." Strikes me as old-fashioned, unnecessary, and condescending.

Also, I despair when I hear high school girls' teams and organizations referred to as the "women's" (team, club, group). I am the father of two daughters and one is still a "girl" (she's seventeen). I will accept "young women." I don't want to be chastised for calling a teen-ager a "girl" or a "boy" while they're still in high school.

I am good, and have been for some time, about calling college students "women" and "men" (though they weren't that in my day - we were college "kids"), but would like to see kids before the age of eighteen be allowed not to grow up too fast. No doubt my daughter disagrees with me, but it wouldn't be the first time.

Bantam1

Best of luck to my beloved Bantams tonight as they take on a great Bates squad. From Trinity's standpoint, it's great to see how the program has built itself back up since the 2008 NESCAC Championship team. They went through a tough period, coaching changes, transfers and kids leaving the program but Cosgrove and his staff have a group of guys that bought into the system, dig in and play some hard-nosed ball. Very proud of what they accomplished so far.

In the CAC, really with the exception of Amherst who has been reasonably steady for a long time, all programs rise and fall.  10 Years ago, Amherst, Trinity, and Williams were tops. Then Williams slipped off for a few years and Bowdoin was strong. Then Trinity fell off and Middlebury came on as a power for multiple years. Recently, Bates, Bowdoin and Williams have all had strong campaigns and let us not forget the 6 seeded Cardinals who won this past CAC tourney.  As one gets further and further out of the gym, you realize the roller coaster ride that each program goes through and you can't help but appreciate the good times. Hopefully Trinity can stay upper echelon for a while and build off of a great year.

Can't get there tonight but go Bants!

WPI89,

You're right, I filled out one for the women (couldn't access the one for the men) and nothing has been done. Usually there is an update after the the first 2 rounds telling us where we stand, but nothing so far this year.  When I log into my account and pull up the bracket I filled out for the women it shows some of my incorrect picks with lines drawn through them, yet other incorrect picks look like they have advanced. No rhyme or reason. ???  Strange.

Thanks Magic - with "my team" exiting early again this year - it was all I had left!

Funny - I did the same thing - thought I had a near perfect women's bracket picked and then realized there were some "wrong" picks not crossed out!

Good luck NESCAC (and Babson) tonight!

jumpshot

Bates, away from the friendly confines of their gym and local refs, loses to Trinity on a neutral court. Good season by Bates, yet only one signature win on the road this year (at Babson in November) outside of first round win over Richard Stockton ....
