I believe that there are several players that chose between various schools that we do not know the full story if one relies only on internet stories

The Williams roster certainly underscores the Ephs' ability to recruit on a national basis....3 kids from Ohio, 2 from Indiana, 2 from California, plus kids from Idaho, Tennessee and Washington state.

At the same time I find it interesting that the Williams roster does not include any players from New England or New York/New Jersey, and none from the New England prep ranks, arguably the deepest collection of high school basketball talent in the country, and right in its backyard (although Williams has a kid from St. Sebastian's coming in next year).

Even though there is a lot of talent in its backyard Williams historically has not depended on New England kids to stock its roster, unlike many other NESCAC schools (last year's Amherst roster included 6 New England kids, and 5 from the New England/MAPLS prep ranks). Even Tufts, whose ability to recruit athletes on a national basis may be second to Williams in the NESCAC (in large part due to its Boston location) had new 6 England kids, 4 NY/NJ kids and 3 NE prep kids on last year's roster.

Notwithstanding the geographic diversity of the upcoming Williams roster, I would hesitate to draw any conclusions from this small sample set, however, as there are a lot of variables involved, from coach's preferences to alumni networks to the fact that it may be a lot easier to recruit outside of New England given the competition for New England kids among Ivies, NESCAC, NEWMAC and Patriot league schools.  And for all I know Williams may have recruited a lot of New England kids but lost them to Ivies or other NESCAC schools. Just an observation on a slow Saturday morning waiting for the football games to begin....

Interesting observation, JustAFan.  I have been noticing this as well.  While Amherst has long shown an ability to find kids from across the country (we have had star players from North Carolina, California, and Minnesota to name a few places), the Northeast (which I personally define as New England plus NY, NJ and PA) has always been the bedrock of our recruiting pool.  I am not sure we have ever not had a couple of players from Massachusetts on our roster, let alone the rest of the Northeast.  Our starting lineups usually reflect the same characteristics (although the two best players on our first national championship team were from CA and MN with a third starter from CA).

My sense was that Coach Paulsen operated in a roughly similar way while at Williams -- national pool, but clearly weighted to Massachusetts and the Northeast.  Coach Maker, however, appeared to be truly national in his approach to recruiting.  He seems to have been truly just as likely to pull a kid from Indiana or Idaho as he would his own backyard in Massachusetts.  While it is early yet, Coach App seems to be following these footsteps.  I don't know if what approach is better or worse -- clearly it is possible to have success either way -- but I do find it interesting.  Thanks for raising.

Amherst's roster is not up yet....but the "season" has started!  There is an Instagram poster on the Amherst BB website section that was posted today.  Provides, IMO, a mindset for the team this season.  To quote the message..." Plays are not as important as players, players not as important as teammates!"...hope I got that correct.
Was checking the Trinity football roster earlier...big game this week.  Need to correct an earlier post wrt to the Trinity Spears trying out for the Bantams basketball team....Trinity Coach is aware.  Spears is listed as a FY player.  Guess he was "redshirted" last year due to his ACL injury.  I had posted him as a soph.
This year's schedule is making my planning to attend live games difficult :).  May have to miss a Williams game in LeFrak until the "post season". :'(

Amherst's roster is not up yet....

Doesn't it seem late???  Neither men or women roster posted yet.

NE Jeffs Fan....do not think there is a set date for posting rosters.  On another board, a poster expected rosters by mid month in his conference.
Considering Fall sports are still on.  Football season ends on Nov 14.  Many other teams are competing for CAC titles and post season spots.  Amherst X country teams are working for NCAA slots in several weeks.
The rosters and team previews will show up soon.  Official practices only started five days ago.  There are two sport players still playing that want to contribute to Winter Sport teams.
Note the story on the D3Hoops front page about such conflicts between Fall and Winter sports.

My recollection is that Bowdoin posts their rosters fairly late - perhaps even after their tip off tournament.

Do they get a technical foul for that? ;D

Wesleyan season preview posted.  I think the Cards should be a top 25 team for sure, and could easily crack the top 10 -- they are deep, talented, and now very experienced.  They have their six top players back from their NESCAC title team which really only gelled late in the season, a potential break-out sophomore in Sears, and a few intriguing frosh, especially Hogan and Green.  To me, they have been consistently underrated by pre-season rankings.  Mackey, Kuo, and Davis are all potential all-NESCAC guys, and Epps will be a beast for most of the generally smaller and less physical four-men in the league to handle.

Nescac1....thanks for your take of the Wes team.  It is a hard team to read.  Amherst beat them twice easily during last season....only to lose to them in Hartford in the title game.  They even upset Trinity in the semi- finals at Trinity..the regular season leader.
Anyway, it is my opinion that there will be few teams in the conference that can be overlooked so to speak.  Each team has its "style".  I believe the early games and the holiday season games that Amherst will play are to expose the team to as many styles of play by teams from other regions and other conferences.  Preparations for the hopeful post- season games.

Bowdoin is traveling to Brandeis today for a scrimmage.  Will be an interesting marker for the Polar Bears as they adjust both their offensive and defensive schemes.   Only down side is that there is no video.  :(

Mr. Ypsi

Duncan Robinson had an auspicious debut (albeit exhibition): 15 points against D2(?) LeMoyne.  UM coach Beilein scheduled the exhibition against his (coach) son's team.  Not much of a game, so don't know how much stock to put in DR's performance.

Michigan's exhibition was against Division II Le Moyne College out of Syracuse, New York and it took place on Friday night in Ann Arbor. The attendance figure was 10699, so the former Williams player got to play in front of most likely, the biggest crowd of his career so far.   As Mr Ypsi stated it was Michgan's Coach John Beilein, facing off against his son Patrick Beilein, who is in his 1st year as the head coach of the Dolphins. Patrick joined Le Moyne after working with the Utah Jazz as their player development coach. His father, before he became the head coach at Michigan, was the head coach at Le Moyne from 1983 until 1992. Naturally this was a perfect opportunity for Le Moyne to play an exhibition against Michigan. One that we can expect to see for the next few years, I'm guessing.

Duncan Robinson played 18 minutes off the bench for the Wolverines and was 6x10 from the field. He made 3 of 6 shots from behind the arc and finished with 15 points to trail only one other Michigan player, Caris Levert, who scored 23 points in 30 minutes of court time. Duncan's only other stat was 1 personal foul. he had no free throw attempts, assists, rebounds, turnovers, blocks or steals. Only the Levert kid took more shots than Duncan.

Duncan entered the game with 6:51 gone by in the 1st half and was the 5th man off the bench. Approximately a minute after he entered the game he took his 1st shot, appropriately a 3 pointer and drained it. He also made his 2nd shot a jumper for 2 points about 90 seconds later. He missed his next 2 shots, a pair of 3 point attempts and went to the bench with 6:53 left in the half. He didn't get back into the game until the early stages of the 2nd half at the 18:29 mark and scored with a layup about a minute later. He went back to the bench at the 14:23 mark, came back in about a minute later an immediately hit another 3 pointer. He had another 3 pointer and a jumper in the final 5 minutes of the game for his 15 point total.

Michigan led at the half 28-14 and outscored the Dolphins by a 46-38 score in the 2nd half to make a final of    74-52.

Good beginning for DR and hopefully an indication of how much and in what capacity his talents will be utilized.

Here's a link to the Michigan website that has a 3 minute video showing at least 3 of Duncan's baskets:

magic, you do yeoman's work for all of us.   thanks and +k.
can't quite believe you beat nescac1 to the scoop.

Sinnickson update:  Vermont played 2 exhibition games.  Dylan didn't get any pt in the opener against Rollie Massimino's Keiser U. team that UVM beat by only a few points.
He played five minutes in blowout against cross town St. Michaels, making one of two shots and committing one turnover.  A sophomore walk on from California who grew up locally until high school seems to be getting the back up minutes at the 3 and 4 positions thus far.
Hart update:  In GW's only preseason game, Hart played 17 minutes (seriously) and shot 1-8 sinking a trey alone with 4-5 fts.  A seven point opener bodes well.
GW's coach is Mike Lonergan, former UVM coach and he loves underdog guards.  17 minutes surprised me but may show that Lonergan plans to use Hart off the bench as a bomber.

Some teams still have "tryouts" - Midd, for example. As I implied a while earlier, I do find it slightly discouraging that a D3 team can post its roster before the first practice. I know, the informal workouts in the fall before Nov. 1 are anything but informal in many cases.
