By the way, two other D3 schools have had no nickname that I can recall.

McMurry (Texas) went without a nickname for a while when they gave up Indians and eventually replaced it with the War Hawks.

And Hollins University in the ODAC, which has only women's sports, has no mascot. Maybe there are others out there.

I petitioned pretty hard for my alma mater, Eastern Nazarene to go mascot-less when they decided to switch.  I was told it got some good traction, but was ultimately vetoed by the then-current athletes, who wanted a mascot.  Apparently my citation of McMurry as mascotless really helped the arugment.

I would love for Amherst to totally mess with Williams and adopt the Ephs as their mascot.

I second the nomination of Crimson Moose as Amherst's new nickname. It's very NESCACy!
I would like to amend your second to change the words from Crimson Moose to Bull Moose.

gordonmann

Accepted! Or the Crimson Bull Moose! Let them become one of very few (the first?) schools with a three word mascot!

Bucket

Midd in a dog fight at Lyndon, leading by 2 at the half.

The Hornets are blistering from 3—making 8 of 11 first-half shots from distance.

Zach Baines with 10 first-half points (5-6 from field) for Midd.

Accepted and seconded.  I like that  :o

Thanks Bucket.....went to the game and it seems Midd is slowly taking control of the game.
With regard to your name suggestion.  EHPS is probably an "old school" mascot name...a shorten first name of the founder of Williamstown.  In the past, Harvard was referred to as the Johnnies and Yale as the Eli's.  Now it's the Crimson and the Bulldogs.  Never the Ephs since Col. Williams served UNDER Gen. Amherst in the same French and Indian war.  Then there is the disappearing mascot.  Stanford once known as the Indians like Dartmouth, has the symbol of a Redwood Tree but no one refers to them as Trees.  At least Dartmouth picked a color...Big Green.

Gordonmann...too much time on your hands?  Guess it is the Trinity education bubbling out. I'm posting the fact that you are a Trinity grad here.  Am aware that one Amherst coach reads this board. :)

Midd pulls away for an 85-74 win over Lyndon. Hornets cooled off a bit from deep, though still finished 11/16 from behind the arc.

Matt St. Amour led all scorers with 23, to go with 6 assists and 5 boards.

Zach Baines posts a career-high 20 points, going nearly perfect from the field (9-10).

On the scheduling front since Amherst, Williams and Midd have combined for four scrimmages vs Johnson State this year none of us can exactly claim the moral high ground.  Can we please stop scheduling them folks??

You know, Lyndon's not bad. They did beat Wes. Southern VT was weak for a long time. Now they're good enough to beat the Ephs last year and Bates this year (15-3 overall). Castleton is a reasonable game for Midd and Williams (nearby) - they're usually decent. The talent level at these schools can change really fast, coaches too (Castleton was certainly good when Stan Van Gundy was their coach).

Putting together a schedule in VT is not easy - it's an overnight, or a long ride, for a lot of schools, many of whom are in leagues and not having trouble finding opponents. We're not in the Springfield-Hartford nexus. Johnson State is very weak this year - maybe not in a year or two. The teams in Maine play UMaine-Farmington, usually pretty good, not so this year - and other UMaine branches as they should. Colby, vanquisher of Amherst, just lost in OT tonight to Husson in Bangor, 92-89.

Schedule parity will be accomplished by an expanded NESCAC schedule.

After a year or two in the higher education cultural and social spotlight, the moose/blanks/defectors would be well served to stay out of the national news for a while .... must rebuild investment grade level in these elements.

Ha. Yeah, well, I'm on the road for my regular job and stuck in a hotel with not much to do. Add punchline here.

It was a hard earned victory for Middlebury tonight in a damned if you do, damned if you don't match up.  Lyndon is one of those in-state opponents the Panthers are often criticized for scheduling.  This season's squad, however, had wins over Wesleyan and an Endicott quintet who had beaten Middlebury earlier on.  Hot 3-point shooting that can give any team playing on it's home court the upper hand regardless of the opponent, added to the fact that this is a very talented Lyndon rotation despite the four game losing streak they came in on, kept this one undecided until the final minutes.

Bucket has supplied the numbers for Zach Baines and Matt St. Amour.  I'll only add that 20 of St. Amour's points came in the 2nd half.  He raises his level of play to whatever the team needs from him.  Although the picture quality often made it difficult to recognize everyone, Matt Daley's presence stood out as well.  12 points and 6 boards in 20 minutes off the bench including a credible 4-6 from the stripe.   After two full seasons of not being able to buy a break health-wise he's finally able to show what he can do.  It's good news they recognized the recent stress fracture in his foot early and he's responding well to treatment.  He has more than paid his dues.

Williams drove up to Lyndon State a couple of years ago to play, and the ride up 91 was so long, that I swear we must have driven through Canada!
