Pat, as you know, Turkey Thicket is not far from Catholic University. Not at top of list as a site in D.C. of hard core inner city runs of big time players, unless you say differently in recent years ....

amH63, as I may have mentioned here, I've played all over the world, including most inner city playgrounds throughout the United States, as well as from Argentina to China. Oh, and by the way, went 16-0 versus the plague in two sports during four years ....

No, not at the top of the list -- wasn't sure how far back we were talking!

Jumpshot....am not aware of you being a D.C. Homeboy :).  What period?
My period was in two phases.  Playing was in the NorthEast area from Capital Hill towards JFK Stadium  and slightly North and West.  Upon my return to DC after Amherst, married...did my watching at the Friendship Heights playground and the lighted courts at the Chevy Chase Circle/Library site.  Never aware of of the AU gym or ventured to SW DC.  Maybe you are in the the time period of my younger brother who attended public HS at Wilson...a classmate of Red's daughter.  Wilson HS was attended by four of my classmates.  The other DC classmates attended private schools.  Me...attended a public HS in NE....thus my upper school home area.  Got around by walking, streetcar or bus in those school days....yes, streetcars.

I went once(summer of '73?) to watch the games @ the CC Library site; don't remember Red Auerbach being there that night. Also, went to Turkey Thicket once(probably same summer) but it was to see  slow-pitch softball; a team sponsored by Fred and Harry's Bar(Brookland) was the powerhouse in those days. Was a fast-pitch fan but it died out in DC about that time. My wife-to-be lived a block from the Guy Mason softball field on Wisconsin Ave and we went occasionally to watch touring fast-pitch teams play there.

The problem with fast-pitch softball is that it is like watching baseball where the pitchers are always Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax!  I'm a big soccer fan, so lack of scoring is not, per se, a problem, but a knowledgeable soccer fan knows there is lots of action occurring even in the absence of scoring.  In baseball or fast-pitch, if no one gets on base, there is not a whole helluva lot happening! ;)  (I love a no-hitter, but that is because it is rare!)

ronk.....interesting comments.  One of these days we should get together and discuss your interest in fastball softball.  Your comment wrt Brookland stirred a guilt memory of sorts.  Most interesting area.
I am admiss in saying that my DC only public HS Amherst classmates were only from Wilson. There were two others, including my freshman roommate and a Brookland? raised classmate that I played a little tennis with before Amherst...one site at a clay court which is now the East Wing Gallery of the National Gallery. My FY roommate, a former assistant dean of  Rutgers' Law School, was from Anacostia HS and was 16 years of age at the time.  My tennis partner, was from Coolidge HS.  Another lawyer who never really practiced law.  A NYTimes editorial writer, CEO of NYC PBS channel 13, Pres. Of the Urban League and a prof at Princeton are on his resume.  Besides being the least accomplished Amherst alum from the DC group, I am not a lawyer as most of the group became.  One of the  Wilson grads lived at the Navy Yard, a Navy brat, became a lawyer and  provided the legal help/foundation in the formulation of the California Crop Pickers Union.  Got his head busted along the way...was a bit of a basketball player too :).  Another Wilson grad was the son of the Steelworkers Union's top lawyer and later a Supreme Court Judge...became a lawyer...practicing mainly in Alaska...Indian Nation advocate.  I digress.  My classmates from the area have another common tie.  We have sent our kids to many of the Nescac schools.  I need two hands to count the kids that became Amherst alums. :)

amh63,
My interest in fast-pitch came from my college years('63-66)watching the Scranton(Dunmore) play in the Atlantic Coast Seaboard League against Raybestos Brakes(Ct) and Burry Biscuits(NJ). Can't remember any other teams.
Dunmore had a great shortstop(Joey Lalli) who had starred in baseball and basketball @ GW.
Brothers Furniture was the DC team whose home field was Guy Mason; their main opposition was Flatiron AC of Philly.
That's really the extent of my fast-pitch remembrances. It changed to slow-pitch in the '70s.

At least based on what's been reported so far, a lot of perimeter firepower coming into the league next year, but not a ton of impact big guys.

Interesting.  Gilmour looks like a potential steal ...  from Kent's basketball page:

Congrats to team co-captain Kena Gilmour '16 for committing to play his college basketball at Hamilton!! Kena's recruitment these past couple of years varied from high-academic Division I programs--including offers from Columbia and Dartmouth--to the top Division III programs in the country. Ultimately, Hamilton coach Adam Stockwell scored a major steal in his efforts to build a program that will challenge for NESCAC championships. In his 3 years here, Kena has served as a model for how to seize on everything Kent has to offer--a regular member of Kent's High Honor Roll, a member of the Prefect Board, a two-time All-New England player, and a leader of a team that produced a 23-2 regular season Class A record over the past two years. He is a truly remarkable young man, and we couldn't be prouder of him.

Also from Kent's basketball FB page, some additional Amherst news, as if they need any more recruits ... yet another big recruiting haul for the Jeffs this year, after losing only one contributor from last year's squad:

Congrats to Jamil Gambari '16 for committing to play college basketball at Amherst College!! Beyond its reputation as one of the world's leading academic institutions, Amherst basketball is widely considered the top program in the country. Coach David Hixon is among the most respected coaches nationally in basketball circles, and he leads a program that seems to compete for a national title nearly every year, winning in 2007 and 2013. Coach Hixon is not only getting a scholarship-level player and an All-New England selection this past year in Jamil, he is also getting a young man of tremendous character and motivation, both on and off of the court. We couldn't be happier for Jamil and his family.

Both Gambari and Gilmour were Honorable Mention Class A players (again, the league MVP was Miye Oni, who Yale stole from Williams after he broke his ED commitment, and Middlebury recruit Perry Delorenzo was a third-teamer in that league).  Amherst is bringing a big slew of wing players this year, it will be interesting who breaks through to receive playing time behind McCarthy and Riopel.  My guess is Clapp, but Mobley's shooting is obviously a big asset as well.

So far, and of course this is all hugely speculative, the incoming NESCAC recruits who seem most intriguing to me as potential early-impact guys are Clapp, Thomas Coyne, DeLorenzo, Joe Bell, Nick Seretta, Matt Karpowicz, and Henry Feinberg.

NESCAC1 seems to be always one step of ahead on recruitments

He mentionned Jamil Gambari who spent a year at Kent School after being All State in NY will be attending Amherst
Another Amherst recruit is Josh Chery who did a prep year at Lawrenceville School and is more of a point forward
Eric Sellew was not mentionned but is 6'6" player at Concord-Carlisle who was Gatorade Player of the Year in MA which is based both upon basketball and academic accomplishments

In total I believe Amherst brings in 5 recruits who have complementary skill sets and likely fill needs.

NESCAC1 has mentionned that Jack Duetsch is another recruit  but i suspect he is more likely a smart student who got into Amherst and also happenned to play high school basketball but may not have the skill set needed to make the basketball team- was probably not actively recruited

nescac1

Gotcha, Jayhawk.  Chery looks like another nice pick-up for Amherst.  Interesting Amherst connection, as noted in this article: http://www.northjersey.com/sports/basketball/satisfying-end-to-mka-careers-for-senior-duo-1.1290184?page=all.

Amherst is sure bringing in a lot of wings -- Chery, Gambari, Mobley, and Clapp all seem like guys who are suited to the 2/3.  You figure one of them at least will be a rotation guy behind McCarthy and Riopel, but the rest may have to wait until they are upperclassmen to see much PT.

Mick Hedgepeth was a really good assistant for Williams. I predict a bright future for him. Good luck to Mick!
