When Marietta beat CNU it was because they hit the glass hard.  In their loss to Wesleyan they weren't even trying to rebound by the end.  Wesleyan played tough defense and got to the rim often and hit the glass.  Even if they don't boast the same kind of talent as other NESCAC squads, they're going to be in most games with that kind of work ethic.

QuoteYeah, how about that?

My favorite note on the game comes from Wesleyan's recap. This is the Cardinals' best start since they went 13-0 in 1911-1912. That was the whole season -- 13 games. :)

My guess is that the total travel time for 13 games in 1911-12 was about the same as what this year's team will log with twice the number of games.  Away games back then had to have been an adventure!

Amazing Wesleyan trivia, Gordonmann.  Wesleyan often seems to underwhelm when they have high expectations going into the season, and often surprise when they have low expectations.  It's bizarre.

Some NESCAC recruiting news here (two Bates recruits, one for Hamilton).  It's been overall a pretty quiet fall for significant Early Decision recruiting news, league-wide:

Tonight Marietta gets to regain their standing by playing #2 Whitman.
There is no video stream.
Guess the home team isn't playing in the game.
Bummer.

What do we know about this tournament - lots of good D3 teams and only about seven people in the stands. Frustrating watching the game with no announcer and no score indicator.

I remember Harry Rafferty being hyped as a top frosh and then, it would seem, just becoming a piece of the Cardinal puzzle (didn't start, right?) for the next two years. He certainly was central to the Wes effort last night (19 points)- and judging from his stats the whole season so far, starting all eleven games (12 ppg. 40% from three).

I was impressed with Jordan Sears. Kuo is a beast, we know that, but with Sears in there with him, Wes is truly formidable up front. Sears had a bad night from the line (5-14), but is shooting 60% for the year, so it's not quite hackaShaq time yet.  Sears is very active, strong, runs the floor. He's junior - have I just not paid attention to Wes?

Wes has RIC (4-6, win over Brandeis, 27 pt loss to Eastern CT) next on Dec 3 - and gets on a bus for VT and Midd on Dec 6 and then on to Clinton, NY and Hamilton for the Sat. afternoon game, tough road trip - and we're underway, into the NESCAC battles. Be still my heart.

There was a video stream, it just didn't get added on this site for some reason.  I found it on the Marietta page and watched the last five minutes or so.

We're self service on those links.

It didn't get added because neither school added it.

I know, I just meant that there was a livestats link, but no video - which is strange.  If you're going to list one, why not the other?

Marietta was down a 6-7 guy in Daytona. Call me crazy, but that might make some difference.

MC was up 1 with 6 minutes to go...dunno how you can say they weren't trying, they mostly got beat on free throws.

Because I watched the game.  By the last five minutes, they had four guys jetting back on shots to set up the defense.  Yes, that's probably planned, but it's planned to stop worrying about the offensive glass and that's trouble.

The dude Marietta was missing averages less than four boards per game.  Not exactly a massive difference-maker.   Wesleyan was down two important injured players too -- one of whom averages 11 and 7, the other a key rotation guy.  Injuries are part of the game.  Wesleyan was the better team, even with the guys who were out.

Looking forward to seeing the Ephs play in Ohio. Hope should be a big challenge. If Williams can play like they did at Springfield before Christmas, I like their chances. They need to take that step up to more maturity, to play with teams like Hope. There are a lot of Midwest players on the Williams roster, so there should be a good crowd. Go Ephs!

In advance of the IWU vs Middlebury game Thursday at College of Staten Island, I'm trying to think of NESCAC vs CCIW matchups in the last 20 completed seasons (since 1996-97).  I can think of 4 off the top of my head...

* Amherst 52 North Central 44 - March 23, 2013 (at Salem, VA)

* North Central 77 Middlebury 65 - March 22, 2013 (at Salem, VA)

* IWU 71 Tufts 62 - November 30, 2012 (at Wash U)

* IWU 70 Hamilton 55 - December 7, 2008 (at Wash U)

* IWU 71 Amherst 68 - March 18, 2006 (at Salem, VA)

What other CCIW/NESCAC matchups can you think of?

I recall that Wheaton played Williams in a Holiday tournament, in early January, 2005 at Williams. Wheaton won, 82-74. I believe that snapped a very long home win streak that the Ephs had going.

Thanks...forgot about that one.
