Whitman is not tall but they are not Gwyneed Mercy
Whitman plays tenacious defense, they press but even when the ball passes the midcourt line they are up in the body of players who have the ball , very aggressive on switches which can sometimes result in breakdown. They are disciplined and box out
On offense if they can they push the ball and even though they are small they attack the basket and had several good plays that results in very good three point shots  as some of their players have a very quick release

Their hope is that they will wear you down, maybe not win the first half but win the game

Whitman is a terrible matchup for Williams.  Think how it went against Moravian, but with better players and twice as many of them.

I was there, and it seemed to me that Williams won without any difficulty. When you play a team that presses everywhere, there will be some turnovers. I thought that Williams handled the pressure very well. However, I'm not comparing Moravian to Whitman. Whitman is really good, deserving of their top ranked status. They present a difficult challenge, one that I know Williams is eager for.

As expected, Amherst will host the sectionals.  RMC, Swarthmore are coming to Pioneer Valley, along with the team that beat Midd....the only unranked team.   Swarthmore blew out MIT...scored over 100 points.  Glad RMC meets Swarthmore...both teams ranked above Amherst in the last D3hoops poll.

"(T)he team that beat Midd" is Nichols College  (27-2) who were ranked #14 in the last D3 Top 25 poll (hardly "unranked"). Nichols is in Dudley, MA, a bit south of Worcester, about 45 miles from Amherst. I would think Amherst will be favored in this match-up.

Google Grinnell System. Does that describe what Whitman is doing?

Nichols is coached by Scott Faucher, in his first year there. Pretty good first year! He is the son of Dave Faucher, for 13 years the head coach at Dartmouth, who's spent a lifetime in the business. Scott is the younger brother of Mike and Joe Faucher, both of whom played at Middlebury. The Fauchers are a famous basketball family in the Lebanon Valley of New Hampshire, right on the Vermont border.

Scott spent four years prior to this one as an assistant at Bowdoin, and before that was at St. Michael's (VT), a member of the Northeast 10 Conference (D2). He's a graduate of Wheaton College (MA). Good New England roots!

No. Not at all. Very different philosophy.

Dave ... aren't we down to 16, not 32???

Having seen Whitman, Moravian and Gwynedd Mercy, I'd agree that Whitman is sort of like the other two on steroids.  I'm not really sure how you prepare for them, as they are just so deep and relentless.  They put two guys on the primary ballhandler after every made basket it seems so the Ephs, without a natural second guard, will need to rely heavily on precision passing to get the ball past halfcourt.

The two big issues for Williams will be of course minimizing turnovers vs the press to the extent possible but also keeping Whitman's very quick guards, especially Austin Butler who is the Ben Simmons of D3 (no jumper but so hyper athletic that he still penetrates at will), from destroying the slower Ephs off the bounce.  That's been an issue all year.    In a half court game Williams should be able to compete very well.  But Whitman makes it almost impossible to play at a slow pace because they are in attacking mode, at both ends, every single possession which is made possible by tremendous depth.  And also you can't just pull back and pass up easy shots when you do beat the press.  It's a Catch-22 of sorts.  I'm glad at least App has a week to prep.

I think this is a game that Babek could play a lot and be a key guy as a secondary ballhandler.  In fact I'd like to see the Ephs try, when Karp is resting, a Soto-Scadlock-Heskett-Babek-Casey lineup.  Five guys who can pass and handle at least fairly well.   Probably the five man group best suited to beating the press, while also being solid defensively vs a guard-oriented offense.

In theory because of their height, Williams could throw the ball over the press to their taller players. Dribbling might be tougher against the press
Williams has the height to score inside

32 = 16 X 2

I didn't realize that you were referring to men and women combined ...

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

We do talk about both men and women on the show ... seems odd to talk about only 16 when there are two tournaments going on.

Bad news, Dave Hixon will not be joining us. Last minute cancellation. We understand. We hope to get him on Thursday's show possibly.
