To illustrate magicman's point, here is Bob Quillman's latest prediction of Pool C

Through Friday's games...

All possible due to Matt Snyder's great data - https://tomaroonandgold.blogspot.com/p/division-iii-mens-regional-rankings.html.

Important note -- some of these teams are done, while some are still alive in conference tournaments.  The teams still alive that end up as Pool C candidates will all lose one more game (meaning winning percentage will go down).

Colby Hoops

Amherst leads by 6 at half. They jumped out to a 10-0 lead and Colby fought hard to keep it competitive. Mules can't get any clean looks from deep, Amherst playing great perimeter defense. Colby will need to make some contested threes to win this one.

Jefferson played a few minutes but still not moving well at all. Colby went to zone so he didnt have to guard any one. Credit to him for his toughness, but not sure he's really helping the team much given his current mobility.

SpringSt7

Amherst has been in control almost this whole game---feels like Colby is having to work a whole lot harder for their offense, but they have yet to put the Mules away. Every time it goes up to 7 or 9, Colby gets it down to 3 or 5. Amherst up 4 with just over 5 minutes left.

Nice win for Colby.    Much quicker than Amherst.   If Jefferson has played they’d win by 15.   Very impressed with them and hope that they make a splash in the playoffs.

Farewell to this mediocre Amherst season.   Missed half of their free throws in a conference semifinal?   23 points in a second half with the season on the line?  Yuk. Never found their way this year.   Thanks to Sellew on a very nice career.   Anyone know if Hixon is coming back?

Adios until next November, folks, and thank you for an entertaining and (unlike football) civil board this season!

Colby Hoops

What a win for the Mules! Amherst looked like the better team for much of the night, particularly in the early going, but this Colby team just refuses to go away. Jefferson played 5 minutes, Colby couldn't get anything going offensively and they just grinded out a big time win -- likely eliminating Amherst from the NCAA tournament.

It was far from a pretty game, and not what you'd expect from two good offensive teams. Great defense from both teams (36% and 35% shooting from the floor respectively), not great shotmaking and a lot of fouls. Matt Hanna and Noah Tyson hit some huge shots for Colby, generating most of the Mules offense for the night. But mostly, it was an unbelievable defensive effort -- Ty Williams was so good on Garret Day, Dean Weiner blocked and affected a lot of shots and Tyson was great on the boards.

Amherst had a lot of chances to win this game, but couldn't score. Day struggled, Robinson struggled, Che wasn't a factor at all. The defense was still very good, they hounded Colby on the perimeter.

Gritty, gritty win for Colby.

Colby Hoops

According to Titan Q on the Pool C board, Amherst may still have a shot at a Pool C bid. The bubble is very interesting right now, a ton of teams with similar resumes.

A few more thoughts on last night's game. Key stretch was the first five minutes of the second half, where Colby held Amherst scoreless to take a brief lead. Then with 9 minutes to go, Amherst took a 9-point lead after a layup by Will Phelan and it looked like they were in control again. In the last Amherst-Colby game, that's exactly what happened, Colby fought back to get in the game and then Amherst pulled away. Alex Dorion had a huge And 1 to keep it in striking distance.

Amherst also went ice cold in the second half -- they shot just 23% from the floor. Credit to Colby's defense, but also just some missed shots.

Tufts-Colby should be an interesting one today. Colby got absolutely crushed on the boards in the last game. In addition to being more competitive on the glass, a big key today is for Colby to take advantage of Rogers/Oppenheim on defense. They weren't guarding King outside in the last matchup and he stopped shooting the open shots after he missed a couple -- think he needs to shoot it every single time they play off him today. It's hard to get to the rim when they lay back. Defensively, Colby needs to force turnovers and push the pace. I'd think the winner of this game will host a pod next weekend (although Waterville's non-central location may impact that).

middhoops

In his most recent update of Pool C selection predictions, Titan Q has Midd and Colby/Tufts* off the board very high, then Amherst precariously hanging in the very last round of selections.
Today's results will change some of that, but not much.
Check out Multi Region Topic/Pool C on this board.

*I'm assuming which ever doesn't get the AQ will land in pretty much the same spot.

SpringSt7

Drew Pasteur has Amherst on the outside looking in, noting that they might have "burst their own bubble" after the loss to Colby, but also mentioned that it is a very tough bubble and that they are one of 12 or so teams that have a chance at the last 8 or so spots.

In unrelated statistical observings, and I would assume this is subject to change, but according to Matt Snyder, Williams' played the hardest schedule in the country this year.

SpringSt7

With that being said, if you are an Amherst fan and hoping to see them sneak into the tournament, you should be rooting for WPI, St. Joe's, Yeshiva, Centre, and RPI today, in hopes that the bubble doesn't get any smaller if any of those teams lose.

Or larger and more likely to explode.   :)

There should be an ample amount of teams within the 400 mile non-fly radius of Waterville.

It's a 500 miles radius - and I expect the winner to definitely host, with an outside chance the loser does as well.  It's unlikely the committee gives four NE teams hosting duties (I think Springfield and Middlebury already have them), but the loser of the final will still have a competitive resume for it.  We'll see.  Not sure how geography might come into play.

Tufts up 12 at the half.  Colby struggling with Rogers.

How will this impact Pool C?
