Colby Hoops

As WPI89 notes, Massey has CNU as the favorite to advance (and the Massey Ratings are generally very high on Colby).

CNU has the best three point defense in the country, which should make for an interesting match-up. As I mentioned in a previous post, Colby's offense and shooting numbers have dipped significantly over the last month (starting just before Jefferson went out). The defense has been very good to offset that a bit, but I'm hoping some of the Mules shooters can get hot here.

Regarding Christopher Newport, the star they lost was an absolute monster, so they will certainly be a different team without him.  They also graduated another very sound guard who was a defensive ace.  They seem based on results to be not quite the same level of team overall, but still really tough.  On the other hand, my main impression of them last year was that they were disciplined, tough and sound.  They do nothing to beat themselves: work the ball around well on offense even without a ton of dynamic individual playmakers, and play really sound defense, always in the right position without taking needless risks,  very physical 1-5. Very well-coached..  Aigner is the main offensive guy back from last year and like the Colby guys he can really light it up.  Cutch Ellis is tough and crafty too.   Chappel, who for some reason doesn't play more than a few minutes, killed the Ephs last year.  He's a beast, tossed the Eph big men around, he would be a tough matchup inside for Colby.   If Jefferson and Dorian can get going from outside (heck of the former can even move out there) it would sure help!

No question....

This has been a mystery to me all season....

Newport is a true team - no real statistical leaders on any given night.  They play tough defense and run 10-12 guys at you all game.  Lots of depth.  Real talented freshmen in Anderson.  Jason Aigner, senior shooter: he's got 40 foot range, a quick release, and shoots close to 50%.  You don't want to lose him on defense.

Totally agree....

Junior...if CNU had a true point guard, Aigner would likely have more threes...he's a great shooter, even if he does over rotate.

Should also add that I don't think I would have an issue with Savage over Jefferson at this point for Player of the Year.

Agree with everything, would probably have Rogers over Karp on the first team and might pick Spellman over Donovan, but the last few spots on second team could go to a handful of guys and I wouldn't have an issue.

I think voting happens before the conference tournament, is that right? If conference tournament is included I think it's harder to pick Jefferson for POY, if voting ends before that, he's still the clear choice.

I agree with most of these picks however to leave out Spellman was a absolute travesty!!

SpringSt7

I wish I didn't have to pick second team guys at all, that's how close it is. Went Karp over Rogers because he drew more attention, meant more to his team (best player vs. second best player). Kind of tempted to bump Gilmour down because he just chucked all year, but is what it is.

Voting is after conference tournament, I believe.

Those picks look rock solid to me.  Rogers vs Karp/Gilmour/Farrell for last first team spot is a tough call.  I think I'd swap Farrell for Rogers, but it's a toss-up.   Same with Jefferson vs Savage for POY and Donovan vs Spellman or Padmore for last all-league spot.  But if those are the picks, it would be entirely fair.

NEhoops

I'd sub Spellman for Donovan - I think the first team of Jefferson, Savage, Karpowicz, Farrell, Gilmour looks good.

COY is an interesting award - best team? most impressive turnaround? I wouldn't be surprised if Sheldon takes it. Strahorn is a worthy candidate for sure.

Does anyone have any historical statistics for the NESCAC? I was just wondering where Gilmour would rank all-time in points scored in league play.

NEhoops

From a NESCAC standpoint, and this has been stated already, but I think Colby got an unfavorable draw.

And I think St. Joe's got a very favorable one. Much of this discussion is related to the first game because the next game is against a very good team no matter what pod it is.

I think overall the committee did a good job with the bracket, factoring in repeat/conference opponents and travel limitations.

Donovan is a fine player but couldn't agree more.

Some unexpected choices for sure: https://nescac.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/honors/allconference

Day over Savage and, to a lesser extent, Farrell, seems like a hard argument to make. l'd have had Rogers third for POY, but don't think that is too crazy.

granddaddyhoops

Surprised by Day....Wow no love for Savage and Head to Head vs Farrell, Farrell stats are stronger in every category ....more PPG, APG, RPG, and Steals per game ...head scratcher !
