My question, though, is how a gap year would work academically.  If the enrollment dept signs off on a kid taking a year off (athlete or not), they're basically telling them they won't let a transfer in to take that spot.  You're saying the athletic dept would also have to advocate for that spot after the player has been admitted to the school?  That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.  Either enrollment is willing to hold the spot from one year to the next or they aren't.  I could see if it were a freshman deferring admission, they might make that kid count on the next year's athlete list - but an already enrolled student taking the year off shouldn't really involve athletics at all, right?

Two points to make on this admissions stuff:

First, I think COVID is so unprecedented that there is no way to predict how schools will change admissions policies to account for the next few years.  Just looking at NESCAC alone, I guess it's possible that there will be league-wide policies instituted, but I doubt it, because every school is so differently-situated ... some had massive number of people studying off campus, some entirely shut down, some had a relatively modest pool of people off campus, etc.  Athletics will likewise be dramatically different across schools, and even across sports within schools.  Some teams will have huge logjams on the roster with most key players taking a year off, while others may have most players advancing / graduating on a regular schedule, and badly need reinforcements.  In sum, I think every school will handle admissions, including athletics admissions, very differently from one another over the next few years, based on its own idiosyncratic situation (which also includes finances, dorm capacity, etc.), no two of which will be exactly alike.  So really, it's impossible to try to predict the future based on past admissions practices ... almost certainly, there will be radical changes in how admissions works at every NESCAC school over the next few years, including in regards to athletics, to account for basically three semesters of radical disruption to campus life, which has effected every school / team differently and in still-difficult-to-predict ways.

One smaller point, on the Williams hoops numbers example.  Remember, athletics "slots" aka TIPS do not comprise an entire roster.  If Williams has six hoops recruits in one year on the roster, almost surely, not all of them are "slotted" athletes / TIPS.  Some may be otherwise-admissible candidates who received admissions support from a coach, but that isn't the same as a true "slot" for an athlete of the coach's choosing who meets the minimum academics parameters for a TIP (which, by the way, are still quite high in NESCAC!) but who most likely would not be admitted but for that coach going to bat for the recruit.

Recruiting has certainly been a mess for 2021 and will be for at least a few years. I wonder if the NESCAC's will change their recruiting system following COVID as a Williams/Amherst is very different from Tufts or a Trinity/Conn College so recruiting is definitely unique by school.

With regards to tips, I chose not to mention those because the kids who get tips rather than "slots" in a sport like basketball tend to be very academic and are less likely to contribute at a school that also has slots as a kid who is really good at basketball and has great academics would rather take a surefire slot at a peer school. I am not sure how the tips work for basketball but for another sport I know that for the non slot athletes, a coach can only give a tip if the kid is waitlisted meaning they must be very academically qualified or have some sort of connection or other thing going for them at a particular school. A tip does not guarantee getting off the waitlist though it certainly makes a difference. Tips will be very limited because of the number of students who took a gap year due to COVID-19 as Admissions will prefer to prioritize slotted student-athletes, and non-athlete applicants during ED and RD over making sure some waitlisted student-athletes get in with a tip.

Even if coaches could get 4-5 players in from this year's high school senior class, they probably wouldn't. If a lot of current players choose to defer for a year, the coach will have too many players. The coaches that I know want about 15 player, give or take 1 or 2. It is difficult to coach a huge team, especially with the rules that govern NESCAC play. It looks to me like this year's prospects will have fewer teams interested in them. Just a very bad break for them.

Lost in the shuffle of the madness of the last year or so is that Austin Hutcherson is finally eligible for Illinois, who took a huge jump in national prominence during his redshirt year.

The bad news is that he is battling a back injury that has sidelined him for the beginning of the season, but HC Brad Underwood expects him to contribute significantly once healthy and even called him his team's best athlete, incredibly high praise and certainly a good sign for his ability to adapt to the Big 10.

Another success story in the making, fingers crossed for his health.

Cole Hanin, a promising point guard from the DC area (Bullis), commits to Bowdoin. He is a pure PG and likely the PG of the future. Here are some highlights.

The D3 hoops organization - Pat Coleman - is having financial problems due to the COVID crisis. I urge everybody who benefits from this website to go to the D3 Hoops webpage and give some $$$. This is the only organization of its kind in the country, and we as D3 fans need to step up to keep it open and healthy.

A second strong commitment this week for Midd, Sam Stevens:

After a few strangely quiet recruiting years, Midd is off to a very strong recruiting start this year with two really solid-looking recruits so far.  I imagine both will be in the rotation right away.

Thought I'd put together a combined list of all NESCAC class of 2024 / 2025 recruits, especially since all will have four years of eligibility and I imagine a bunch of the 2024 guys will reclassify.  The ostensibly 2024 guys are listed first for each school, although again, I would guess a lot of them will end up graduating in 2025.  One note on rankings: the NERR rankings tend to add more guys over the course of the year, so the 2025 guys will, as of now, seem to be more highly-ranked than their 2024 counterparts.  One thing is for sure, we've never seen an infusion of talent all at once in NESCAC like we will see in the 21-22 season!

First off, caring about Patreon would be helpful ...

But second, if you read to the bottom of the story linked (below Pat's sign off) you would find a second option that you may find easier.

Pat, Thanks, that worked great. Good luck in your effort. You all do a great job.

What an excellent night for Marlon Sears and Amherst. He did an excellent job with recruiting this year.

Added two more quality commitments in former Columbia commit and Berkshire School PG(post grad and point guard) Canin Reynolds as well as Hotchkiss Captain CJ Mitchell also a point guard.

The Amherst Class is now four strong with two commits interestingly from Berkshire School, so it looks like Coach Depelteau is well on his way into making Berkshire basketball a pipeline to the NESCAC.
