Man, Bowdoin cannot catch a break.  The P'Bears lost a few committed recruits late in the process (for whatever reason) last year too, including one who looked like a future stat at another NESCAC school ... with Reynolds gone, and especially if Grad and Rucker aren't returning for a fifth year next year, 21-22 could be a very long season for Bowdoin.

How does admission work at Bowdoin?  Is it perhaps some recruits just don't end up getting in?

Not sure that Bowdoin is any different than the other NESCAC - or Ivy schools for that matter - in the sense that the coaches have certain spots available to them for students who might fit below the norm.   At the best institutions, of which Bowdoin is one, the coaches review the student's application and qualifications with the admissions office well before decision making time to determine whether the student-athlete has a good chance to get in.   At the Ivy level, a student-athlete is given a "likely letter" - see link below - which is as good as gold.   They do not do that in NESCAC but if a school starts not admitting kids who they have told are likely to get in, recruiting will suffer big time.  Word gets out.

Since March 2020, the NCAA and especially Division III has been on a roller coaster. A ride no one ever predicted or would want to be on. The ride is also not over.

Since March, many in DIII have tried to keep athletics going though through fall seasons the decisions had nearly everyone on the same page. Winter sports have seen more of a multi-pronged approach - depending on the institution, location, type, financial security, mentality, etc., etc., etc.

On this final of a trip of Hoopsville podcasts, we talk to a couple of administrators on the impact the pandemic has made on the division and their institutions. We also talk about different approaches each has taken when it comes to trying to have intercollegiate competition. And we discover why even with the best efforts to move forward, some things are not within one's control.

Yeshiva Athletics Director Joe Bednarsh and Amherst Athletics Director Don Faulstick give us their perspectives in what is a complicated world of restrictions, protocols, testing requirements, and more that are also always changing. Each institution has taken a different path, so far, but it doesn't mean their thinking is all that different. Find out how each is trying to ultimately help student-athletes succeed.

Another place the virus has made a significant impact is to the D3sports.com network. Page views are down a whopping 93%! That ginormous decline has also hurt the financial future of the company. Editor-in-Chief Pat Coleman joins us to discuss the extremely difficult challenge of keeping the websites up and operational and how asking for help from those who frequent the sites seemed like the best course of action.

Plus, Dave gives another in-depth breakdown of where DIII basketball sits in terms of a season ahead and especially possibility of NCAA Championships. And an update on where Hoopsville sits during an unpredicted challenge in front of everyone.

A few notes:

- The latest Hamilton commitment, Hank Morgan, a NJ kid doing a PG year at the Berkshire School along with two Amherst commits who might contribute early in their careers, looks like he could be a really tough scorer at the NESCAC level.  Based on film, he is crafty with a ton of range and can get his shot off in very tight spaces.  I'm not sure if they will actually play any games this season, but if they do, the Berkshire School (suddenly a NESCAC pipeline as a class of 2024 guy is also headed to Hamilton) would be interesting for NESCAC fans to follow.

- Still waiting to hear word of any class of 2025 Conn recruits, it will be interesting to see if Coach Sweeney follows up on his ridiculous first class, one of the best on paper in recent NESCAC history, with more star recruits.

- Strahorn is clearly all in on the strategy that worked so well last year,, bringing in guy after guy with a similar profile: guards / wings between 6'3 and 6'5.  Clearly, his vision is eventually (after his small backcourt senior duo finally graduate) putting waves of mostly interchangeable perimeter guys with decent size and who can shoot the 3 at a high level on the floor together, and figure he can compensate with mismatches on offense and switching on defense for whatever his roster lacks in interior size.  Seems like he recruits very few interior-oriented guys.  With Will King potentially growing into a Harden-esque lead guard role as his shooting improves, sort of a 2020 Rockets strategy.

- There is a long list of guys who could make an immediate impact in NESCAC.  While even more speculative than usual, a guess at some of the recruits who might be worth watching include a few of the Amherst guys (a lot of solid recruits without one who stands out as obviously the best of the bunch, hard to say which recruits will play early for a new coach but certainly several of them will), Gotham at Bates, McGowan at Bowdoin, O'Connell and Baier at Colby, Flynn, Rogers, Hartel, Rice and Murray at Conn, Michaels and Morgan at Hamilton, Bobbett and Stevens at Midd (depending on which seniors take a gap year for Midd, easy to imagine either of these guys potentially starting as frosh), Dieterle and Murphy at Tufts, Dorion at Trinity, Oladitan, Bryant and Johnson at Wesleyan, and Roughley, Porter and Glatzer at Williams.   This list is not meant to be exhaustive, I'm surely missing some ...

If I had to compile an early ROY watch list, I'd go with Baier, Flynn, Rice, Hartel, Morgan, Bobbett, Stevens, Dorion, Bryant, Roughley, Porter, and an Amherst guy TBD ...

Good stuff 912.  I'm curious about Conn too.  The last two years its main recruits seemed to come very very late.  Perhaps the strategy is to wait on guys who are hoping for D1?

This is a major bummer:  https://herald-review.com/sports/college/basketball/illinois-guard-austin-hutcherson-out-for-the-season-with-a-stress-fracture-in-back/article_038f2930-a2a3-50c4-9068-6c38d85ca1df.html

In a normal year, we'd still be recapping week one of league play.  Alas ...

Two NESCAC alum notes.  First, congrats to former Hamilton hooper Ephraim McDowell '12, who was named Deputy Associate Counsel for the Biden White House.  He's already had quite a legal career, to match his awesome name, having been a Supreme Court clerk before this:

https://buildbackbetter.gov/press-releases/president-elect-biden-and-vice-president-elect-harris-announce-additional-members-of-the-office-of-the-white-house-counsel-2/

Great Heat feature on Duncan Robinson, featuring interviews with Crotty, Greenman, Maker, Dick Quinn, and a ton of great footage from his time at Williams:

Surprised no one has yet posted the D3 all decade hoops team.  Congrats to well-deserving NESCAC representatives Toomey, Mayer, and Sharry!

Duncan was also on the JJ Reddick podcast yesterday, where he got to confront Malcolm Gladwell directly for the digs he took at Williams and d3 basketball back in the Spring.  Gladwell didn't come entirely around, but he did retract some of the more ridiculous statements.

They also announced Duncan would be getting his own podcast to focus on people who overcome large odds to achieve success.

Glad Duncan pushed back on Gladwell, who makes ridiculous statements in more than just this context.

Davis Reid, a former Wesleyan (and Exeter) hoopster, will be co-hosting Duncan's podcast.  Once Duncan gets $$$ this off-season, he is gonna have the preppiest entourage in NBA history.
