amh63,

Apart from bemoaning the cancellation of the 2020-21 season and the lost opportunity for those seniors, Midd posters won't have much to say before viewing the new product.  Over the past fifteen seasons Panther fans have been spoiled.  Even the few disappointing W-L records equaled the best in the history of the program that predated this new era.  We are long overdue for a true rebuilding year, if that is what it's to be.  Half a dozen young players might have us more excited about the coming season had they been able to put the 2020-21 slate under their belts, but among them only Charley Moore looked ready for increased playing time the last time the Panthers walked off the court in 2020.  Two new classes' recruits will be in the mix, so who knows?

I ran into Old Guy at a local music festival a few evenings ago.   The tunes were good but I know we'll both be happier when Pepin Gymnasium returns as the entertainment venue of choice.

Vandy74....great to hear from you!  Say hello to your MBB traveling mate for me.  Our mutual friend from Naples Fla....my Frat brother and former roommate who knows your niece has sadly passed away recently.  Write-up in the latest Amherst mag...Robert Landon III '62.

amh63,

I'm very sorry to hear about Robert Landon's recent passing.  I greatly enjoyed meeting him and his son at Hayley and Kirby's graduation festivities.  I recall his son Robert was well acquainted with a distant relative of mine who served as president of Miami University from 1980-2000.  I'll be joining Middhoops for dinner on Friday and will pass along your best wishes.

Vandy74...when you meet Midhoops, ask Matt, the Vt "bomber" if his 603 phone number is the same.  May give you guys a call at dinner.  Awaiting Midd's MBB schedule...to see if I may catch you both at an away game.  My best man has moved to the Durham NC area from Niantic, Ct. so it gets harder for me to catch a live game other than an ACC game.  Anyway...my problem :'(

Little know fact that is probably only interesting to me: Edward's father, Big John Witherington, was two years ahead of me at W&L. During basketball tryouts my freshman year, he was the only person I finished ahead of in the pre-season timed mile run. And he was about 8 inches taller than me. My college "career" ended w/ those tryouts. Big John played for 4 years. And by the looks of things, Edward is better than his old man. (As we all want our sons to be.) I look forward to welcoming them to Vermont!

With tongue firmly in cheek, I say to my good friend Bucket: I sure hope Edward is faster than his old man...

Bucket...have a number of memories of W&L...beside passing by the campus on the way to Salem.  A  nearby neighbor whose daughter went to W&L tried to convince my oldest son to attend W&L.  My oldest son did give a geology paper at W&L that was attended by my late mother and other members of my family.  Beautiful campus and area.  I'm a big fan of both Washington and Lee.  Gen. Lee, a graduate of West Point, was offered the job of leading the Union army during the Civil War; but turned it down because he would not fight against his state.  His home at Arlington Va. had no slaves...they were all free.  A free slave helped Lee's wife escape the fighting...near the Salem area.

Amh63 - I urge you to read the book "Robert E. Lee and Me" by General Ty Seidule, retired long time historian at the U.S. Military Academy. Lee was not the man you portray him to be. First and most important, Lee was a traitor, responsible for the deaths of more American soldiers than anyone in our history. This, in the worst cause ever fought for - the maintenance of slavery. That's just the beginning, but Seidule presents the damning case against Lee very well. I urge you to read it. W&L, a fine school, plays a big part in this story.

Another example of a well-educated EPH (toad22) correcting a false narrative put forth by a less well-informed mammoth (amH63).

My apology to Bucket for mentioning Lee.  Toad22...thanks for the reference.  Lee is "buried" at W&L.  Lee lost his citizenship at the end of the war....and regained it sometime later.  Lee's wife owned the home/house that sits on top of the hill above the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington. The family once owned all the land to National Airport and I believe encompasses the Pentagon.  I repeat, Lincoln offered the job to Lee first, due to his experience.  Jumpshot...what class were you at Williams?

I have no doubt that he is!

It's a very good book, and I heartily recommend it as well. (Seidule is a W&L alum, as well, though before my time.)

Via Twitter, Trinity has landed former Tulane F Ben Callahan-Gold. Something must've happened because he transferred to Bryant in May but somehow ended up at Trinity. I usually tend to believe D1 transfers are overrated but this one seems different. 6'8 sophomore from NMH who can really shoot it.

A potential impact roster add.
