anyone know why the tufts amherst games is not on jumbocast.

I assume you mean Tufts-Trinity?

Tufts-Amherst is in the archive.

I was perusing tonight's box score, and I came up with an odd stat:

PG Chris Shalvoy (7) and SG Tim McLaughlin (9) led their teams in rebounding.

Also,

Does anybody know what happened to Rudin in the Trinity game?  The box score has him starting and playing 1 minute.

CCsalive

That would stink if Rudin was injured.

Terribly disappointing weekend for the Camels in Maine...they are still capable of some nescac wins, but it sure would have been nice to beat Wes and play Colyby/Bowdoin at home...instead 0-3. Is it too early to start crying for a home and home conference schedule?

Conn. College hoping for a double round-robin is like Hillary Clinton running for president:

No shot of a home and home....ever.

The lack of the 2nd round robin has helped the NESCAC in regards to NCAA bids, plus that means more traveling and/or classes missed.

Marty Peretz

The UAA does it and the travel in that league is far more grueling than anything in the NESCAC.

formerbant10

You are correct.

It's not about how severe the traveling is...rather the ideology of the NESCAC that will prevent that from happening.

And with the recent success of Williams and Amherst nationally, there is no way the Presidents will change how it is.

And somehow they manage to be good schools nonetheless. :)

I enoyed my welcome to this board by the Historian. He's probably the type of guy who never played ball in his life but knows more than the rest of us.

Williams will be fine next season. I never stated that this was their year. They need time and experience and no one will want to play them next season. The first year class has some players.

Paulsen can't recruit? He just brought in a top class and he's a terrific coach.

Friar and Historian-by the way, I'm not a Williams guy. No bias here.

Friar T

The welcome was mine Bluesky and you're welcome. While my ball-playing days are far behind me, I still am clearly more knowledgable than you as you continue to support Williams' talent. Since Paulsen took the reigns that program has steadily spiraled downwards. The recruiting classes have been decent, at best, and as it's been stated on the board, his sideline antics are growing more and more out of control. I didn't hear any horror stories from Saturday, but I'm sure if I asked around I'd hear about some bulging veins and shrill voices. Is he a nice guy, yes. Can he coach when he has talent there, yes. But thus far, he's shown no recruiting ability, none. His biggest recuit to date was supposed to be Shalvoy and we've all seen how he's turned out. Granted, better than me, but I can name at least 5 or 6 other pgs in the 'CAC I'd rather have at the helm of my program.

If you are not a Williams guy then you have no excuse. May the Lord help you...

Pat, I know you HATE the NESCAC schedule, but FormerBant is right. They haven't added a 9th game in football and they're not going to add a 2nd rotation in hoops. It would take an act of congress to make it so...

I don't think Shalvoy was supposed to be Paulsen's top recruit -- from his own class, I'd say Rose (an all-league caliber talent) and Weisbrot (who has really been limited by injuries unfortunately) were, I believe, higher profile guys.  And Shalvoy is certainly a solid player, he has just had too much burden to bear this year for a point guard with Rose, until starting to come around recently, struggling with shooting after breaking his hand, and the rest of the scorers primarily frosh.

Paulsen had a few lean recruiting years, it's true (in particular this year's senior class which currently has only one guy playing limited minutes, and the sophomore class is just OK) -- but he has brought in some top flight talent as well (Kain, Cole, Newton, Rose).  Not at Hixon's level of late, but neither has anyone else in the NESCAC.  And it does seem like this year's class may turn out to be good -- two guys are starting already, including a 6'8 center, and making solid contributions, with one more (Rubin) in the top 7-8.  Plus bigger guys are generally slower to make an impact and the Ephs have three more frosh 6'5 or over who could develop down the line (all have seen at least some minutes this year).   I'd like to see the Ephs win a few more games on sheer toughness and grit when they are outmatched in terms of raw talent, which definitely happened during the Sheehy years -- from 2000-2002 there weren't really a lot of stars in the program, but the Ephs still found a way to win fairly consistently.

If the three frosh currently in the rotation make the same sort of improvement as this year's juniors made before their sophomore years, and at least one more emerges, the Ephs will have a good core of 6-7 capable scorers next year for the first time in quite awhile.   If the Ephs can make a solid run the rest of this year and get a middle-of-the-pack NESCAC tourney seed, it bodes well for the future with five underclassman starters, including two frosh, while many other teams in the conference are heavily reliant on seniors (Colby, Wesleyan, Bates, Trinity).   I have no idea what the Ephs have coming in in terms of next year's recruits, but if they can add even 1-2 impact guys, they'll have a very deep group of young talent which (again, if guys develop) could make them competitive again over the next few years.  But, it would be nice to see some more progress this year, which has gone worse than anyone really expected, although the team is certainly playing better than it did early in the season.

nescac1-very informative post. You nailed it!

....great analysis once again from nescac1.  you cover everything pretty well.   i will add that friart really doesn't "know" anything about paulsen or williams.  amherts folks are arrogant enough, and don't need any help from some cyber-friend who makes himself out to be someone he isn't.....

CCsalive

I know there are better topics to discuss, but I'm intrigued by formerbants reasoning in regard to nescac sheduling, presidents, etc.   Does the "Little Three" or little Ivy or whatever its called factor in? Does that affiliation mean anything anymore? That's two extra games for three teams already.
