I know I pissed off a lot of people with my postings a few weeks ago about crediting press releases.  While I admit that my postings were not as diplomatic as they could have been, I stand by my conviction that it is important to give the original writer -- or, at least, the source -- all credit due.

In that vein, and to show that I don't just point out problems, I openly applaud d3hoops for crediting all of their front page stories on conference previews.  That simple step -- giving a byline that says the article came from someone else's press release -- is all I sought.

Good job.

Historian: That's standard procedure in that space for years. Believe me, it's nothing you did. It's not "a step" and it's nothing new. Poke around the site a little.

Check all the releases in that section going back, my man. Not something we started to please you. Plenty of schools and conferences have made good use of the press releases functionality on our site -- nearly 1,500 releases, in fact, in two seasons. And they all come with the automatic disclaimer, as they have since 2005.

Football is officially over in he NESCAC.  Congrats to Midd on winning the championship.  Also, Williams put on a great show for the College Game Day broadcast by ESPN.  The Ephs defense absolutely dominated AmHerst, with Williams winning 20-0 in the Biggest Little Game in America.

Now the NESCAC can turn its full attention to hoops.  Should be a great year.

NESCAC football and hoops might as well be in different NCAA classifications.  Actually, football could probably be D-3AA all on their own.  It's hard to fathom the decision making that goes into allowing one sport (or all sports but football) to go all out while locking down football to the point of making it completely irrelevant.  While it is interesting to follow NESCAC football (and much more for those directly involved), the NESCAC basketball season is so much more compelling.

Jeffs are being honored at the basketball hall of fame today. After the ceremony they are conducting a clinic for kids...good stuff!

Somebody tell Kantor its perimeter not parameter that he means to use in his season preview:

https://cms.amherst.edu/athletics/teams/winter/basketball-m/season_preview

He also spells Meehan's name wrong.

A byline can be a bitch...

Somebody tell Kantor that his job is to write press releases, NOT poorly phrased novellas....nothing like an SID who thinks they're writing for SI. And if he does want to do the latter, he'd better not use his press releases in his journalism school portfolio...

Friar T

Wow, personal shots at an SID... Ouch. I suppose that due to the incredible pieces of insight we spew on this message board it gives us a right to be critical. Unless you're Bill Simmons, keep your criticisms to yourself. I doubt you'd want anyone going through all the work on your desk looking for typos and errors...

The world should fear Ben Kaplan and his silky-smooth jumper. A graduate of HS powerhouse New Trier, this is a kid who had opportunity to play elsewhere and was initially supposed to walk-on at Amherst. Really glad he's changed his mind and Hixon gave him the chance to be a part of the team.

Also, I think it's a little unfair to compare the NE schools to some of the Midwest powers. Some of the WIAC schools and the like have enrollments in the 10s of thousands, while Amherst floats around 1,600. Believe what your ex-girlfriend told you, size matters...

Bates roster is up:

http://www.bates.edu/x169992.xml

They did, as predicted, add a ton of size (6'7 sophomore transfer, and 6'10, and 6'6, 6'5, 6'4, 6'4 frosh).  Many of those guys should get immediate P.T. with all the Bobcats lose up front.   I also noticed Place is back, a junior who took last season off.   Bates should have a solid backcourt despite the loss of Ray between the three seniors, Wilson, and Place, the question will be how fast the young big guys can contribute.

why is that on the front page story about pre-season all-americans, it refers to Ben Strong as d3hoops.com Player of the Year for last season, but makes no mention of Andrew Olson's splitting the award with him?

Pat Coleman

He didn't share the award. It was Ben Strong's alone.

They split some other award, but it wasn't the d3hoop.com award.  Was it the COSIDA player of the year, maybe?

somewhat of a double standard for all you amherst fans who got on  pat coleman for fogetting a byline, myself included. i'm guessing mr. kantor is not an amherst alum and not the best of writers, but give him credit...he has edited that page nearly five times as seen in the "last edited" note below the page title.

Working SID

So I can't mention that Virginia Wesleyan isn't hyphenated and set up is two words?

Funny that Amherst fans get on people if you dare to pronounce the school as it's spelled but Amherst's official documents misspell the names of opponents. :)

Thought it was the NABC honor that they split

Friar T

Don't get me wrong, I see the mistakes and find them just as offensive and laughable. However, I'm not trying to air anyone's dirty laundry.

Laugh out loud when you read it, sure.

Make fun with your friends, definitely.

Post your opinion of his writing on a public forum like you're Jim Rome, don't go there.

Oh, and comparing this to the Coleman-byline saga is apples and oranges.

Good call on the NABC award formerbant, at least someone knew what they were talking about. How things in the Roc?
