Walzy,
Is there any relation between DJ Carcieri and the Rhode Island governor Donald Carcieri? Just curious.

Nescac 1,

Interesting point about some of the "lesser competition". I have always thought the Ursinus win was a good one given their record and their all-american (or pre-season all american). While Wesylan is a rival game and they have always given the Ephs trouble even in Ephs glory seasons, Wesleyan also starts Kevin Skura, a Williams transfer who never even saw action as an Eph. Back in '04 when Wesleyan brought Williams to OT they had those two players (Keenan Johnson and first name?, Mills - I forget their names exact names) who were really good. They weren't a great team players persay, but these two guys were really athletic and had the ability that made an upset loss somewhat conceivable. This year I really don't see why they couldn't man handle Wesleyan even if the game was on the road -though I do know the referees are AWFUL there. As for Framingham St., I think they played Brandeis sans Deluca which is a lot different than a Brandeis team with Deluca. That being said, Tufts had a similar score against a sans Deluca Brandeis team, but Tufts isn't always a good barometer especially early on in the season. Nonetheless, you bring up some good points. I think the Keene St. game that precludes the NESCAC conference games will be a good barometer for where the Ephs are. Either way, as I acknowledged in my previous post, the Ephs are more balanced this year and it won't require a 30pt. effort from Shalvoy to beat a team equivalent to the '06 Trinity team or a 7-9 3pt. night from Shalvoy to beat the Jeffs (or a lousy defensive effort on the behalf of Olson or Mike Salerno "clap-clap-clap-clap-clap"  - depending on how you interpret allowing a guy that hot to get off that many relatively open looks.).

Olson played all 40 minutes today.  I guess Carcieri and Meehan have some work to do.  Amherst is going to need to find someone else they can trust to handle the ball in close games to get him some rest...
mrmike,

Good catch on the Olson PT in the WNEC game. However, it is not due to Carcieri and Meehan not playing up to par, but rather due to their recent injuries: DJ hurt his knee and Conor his ankle. Hopefully these two get healthy to assist in shouldering the load.

I other news, Amherst is a 21.0 point favorite in Thursday's MIT game.

In other really bad news, I saw Andrew Olson walking around in crutches with a boot on his right foot today.

That is definitely bad news for the Jeffs ... Saturday's Brandeis / Amherst game will be a lot less interesting if Olson and Deluca are both out.   Hopefully both can recover in timely fashion.  Otherwise, with all of Amherst's point guard injuries, all of those debates from last year's Amherst posters about whether Wong or Bradley should be the fourth team point guard will finally be settled.

Nescac1,

Haven't seen UofR play just yet, but their 2 big guys are going to be very hard for any team to stop....including the Jeffs.  Onyiruka has really stepped up his game, was hitting consistently from about 17ft out this summer.  I'll let you know when I see them in person next week.

Saturday's Amherst/WNEC game was pretty exciting for such an early season match-up. WNEC played a good game. They've got a nice motion offense, but were lacking big men to match-up with the Jeffs. Amherst had a solid second half. Their offense looked crisp as they started the half with at least a 17-3 run. WNEC was getting open shots, but the shots just weren't falling. A lack of rebounding made it tough. WNEC's point guard had a great defensive game against Olsen.

The four-headed monster that is the Amherst front court really looks good. I feel sorry for any big man that has to weather the constant wave of fresh bodies that Amherst send out there.

n hoops,

DJ Carcieri is the Rhode Island governor.

Kanem Johnson and Keala Mills were the Wes duo. Those guys could put up 65 between them and Wes would lose 85-67. Keala didn't play defense.

Mike Sa-Ler-No Clap, Clap, Clap-Clap-Clap. It's catchy isn't it? He's got a National Championship ring and two Nescac titles. What does Shalvoy have?

Will Kuntz has a national championship and two NESCAC championships. What do Harper, Schiel, and Bedford have? A unibrow, a cheater/disgrace of a reputation, and a look that doesn't require a game roster to know he is from New Jersey. Point understood?

Shalvoy has one NESCAC title and if Olson does not come out of this boot or can not return to his true self, Shalvoy may very well have another. I was not actually hoping to compare Salerno and Shalvoy but rather suggest that Williams will not need to have Shalvoy be in the graces of the 3 point Gods (as some posters such as yourself suggested he was in the NESCAC finals) to beat Amherst this year due to a better scoring attack that Williams boasts this year. While I am no atheist, I was merely pointing out that the Amherst defense (Salerno and Olson) gave him a number of good looks from behind the arc last year, and while he was hot, the Amherst defense should be more to blame than "luck".

As for Carcieri, while you can do nothing to answer my question, he is without a doubt the hardest looking white boy coming out of an elitist NE prep school that I have EVER seen. If he doesn't make this year's crazy team, I will be very disappointed.

walzy31

Who's Will Kuntz?

Cheering for injury...I expect nothing less.

Shalvoy on a court shooting threes by himself. He shoots nine uncontested threes at a time. What percentage of the time would he make seven of nine?

DJ made the all-nescac all-crazy squad last year, immediately following that announcement, he petitioned the Rhode Island senate to pass a law eliminating parking tickets and speeding violations to all Italians while in the tiny state.

Who's Will Kuntz?

My point exactly. He graduated in '06. He was the gawky, skinny reserve at the big man spot. He has a national championship. Bedford, Harper, and Schiel do not. Just keeping things in perspective.

Most good shooters would go 6-9 in an empty gym. Brain Baskaukas is currently shooting 8-11 from behind the arc in live competition.

DJ Carcieri is not related to the Governor of Rhode Island. He played his high school ball at Bishop Hendricken, then did a PG year. They won the RI state championship when he was the starting point guard.

I saw Amherst play Westfield. They are very impressive. They seem very much like a mid-level Ivy team. They are very big and shoot it well. Right now they are likely the best team in the NESCAC, though I haven't seem Trinity. Williams is on a trajectory like last year's team. They will get a lot better as the season moves along. Look for Hardy and Rubin to come into their own in the second half. They will both be major contributors before it is over.

N Hoops,

I'm confused, why does Schiel have a cheater/disgrace of a reputation?  I've never heard of that before.

I don't want to air Schiel's "dirty laundry" but he didn't miss the first half of his sophomore (?) season b/c of an injury but rather some dishonest actions in the academic realm. Personally, I think those type of actions only tarnish the repuation of NESCAC athletes - while I don't think it's fair, people generalize and the athletic/student debate that so many NESCAC face needs no more fuel for the fire. I realize non-athletes make the same mistake, but we all know that athletes are under the microscope more in their performance in classroom than non-athletes. I won't discuss his behavior at the '04 final four in salem but those who were there are all well aware. In what should have been a great stage for the NESCAC having two great teams represented in Salem, ended up in embarassment due to off court behavior.

Hey La Verdad, given your user name, what is the scoop on Olson's injury?  DeLuca is out for the Amherst game which is a huge blow, if Olson is healthy I'd exepect Amherst to win, if Olson out, I'd say  Brandeis is the favorite playing at home.

Several good match-ups this week.  Tonight Conn/Wheaton should be fun, two small, perimeter oriented teams who can really light it up, if Conn wins that they could well be undefeated when they face Coast Guard on Jan. 14th, and Tufts continues its usual tough early season schedule with a game at Keene State.  On Friday, Trinity should get its first real test of the season when it hosts a relatively inexperienced, but very talented, RIC team featuring several stellar frosh and two Div II transfers.   December 8 Midd hosts Hamilton, and of course there is the big game in Waltham, which may be the biggest interconference New England regular season match-up of this decade (I can't recall a time two top ten teams, let alone two top five teams, have played other than Williams/Amherst/Trinity games), even if slightly downgraded due to the injury situation.
