Sorry guys, good game, even if we win kinda ugly :)  (or if you're nice, you say we play a "traditional" game, heheh).  But even with Middlebury going down to our guys and Trinity crashing out, I'm sure Amherst by itself will ensure that the NESCAC has a fine tournament.   And who knows about Bowdoin -- maybe they can copy the runs their women's squad has made the past few years...  good luck.

Bowdoin with a nice game tonight to get the NESCAC on the board.
How about those other first round matchups tonight:
Chicago / UW Stevens Point
Wooster / Wash U

Different quality of play than a Clarkson game.

Back from Brandeis... fun doubleheader.  Thoughts:

-Hard to believe Curry won a title in any conference... they looked atrocious tonight.  Everyone was soft on defense.  Every passing lane was clear.  Every shot was uncontested.  Bowdoin shot 72 freaking percent in the first half... that doesn't happen by accident.

-Everyone knew Hipp could shoot, but a lot of other guys stepped up tonight.  KJ and Hauser put on a show, making threes left and right.  Goes to show what a few open looks can do for you.  Lord knows they'll face a better defense tomorrow.

-Brandeis looked strong.  I've seen Terrell Hollins play four times, and every time I get more impressed by him.  He's really physical under the basket on both ends, he can score, he boxes out really aggressively.  I like him a lot.

-Olson and Coppens took a lot more dumb shots than usual, and they weren't falling.  It'll be interesting to see what happens if they shoot like that against a better-rebounding team.  Hollins and the other Brandeis bigs will have their hands full with Fliegel/Sarge/KJ and Mark Phillips (who played really well tonight).

Bowdoin's got a good shot tomorrow, especially considering how well rested they'll be.  Gilbride emptied the bench in the second half.  Fliegel and Sargeantson had the warmup jackets on with about 6 minutes left... they never came back off.

Good luck to the two NESCAC schools left... go deep.

Hixon should send Greg Gorton, the head coach at Loras, a bottle of Dom Perignon for knocking UW-Whitewater out of the tournament.  They were a big threat to Amherst if they met in Salem...

We'll see if they get there first...

Incredible night for the IIAC generally.  A conference where only the tourney winner usually gets in and is one and done finally gets in two teams (Loras and Buena Vista), who go on the road to beat nationally ranked teams (UW Whitewater and St. Thomas) in round 1.  Gotta love those crazy Iowans.

Amherst -27.5 Vs. John Jay
Halftime 59-32
Final 96-74

Olson finished with 12 and 12 (10 and 10 in the first half).
Walters with 24 and 8.
Jones with 15 and 10.

Amherst plays Richard Stockton on Friday night.
Games will be played at Plattsburgh or Amherst (assuming Plattsburgh wins...tied 60-60 with 3 mins left).

I am really looking forward to the Amherst- Richard Stockton match up. Stockton is making RIC look like a 7th grade girls travel team. Creating turnovers, hitting shots with guys in their face, and  incredibly scrappy. Amherst has struggled with teams from the NJCU in the past, and I could see it happening here. While Amherst is certainly the more disciplined team, Stockton will definitely look to make it ugly. Definitely one of the games to watch next weekend!

I agree with you that the Richard Stockton game will be good.

Question for people at the game: early in the second half, this looked like a game that Amherst could win by 40+.  What's the story -- the Amherst bench couldn't hang with the John Jay bench?  The Amherst bench couldn't hang with the John Jay starters?  For all the people who talk about what the future of the Amherst team will look like, this would be interesting to have some analysis of.

Also, "Richard Stockton" just sounds like a name that would give Amherst trouble.  If this was 2001, I would be pessimistic.  Now I'm just very slightly anxious.

Did anyone see the Bowdoin game?  I was following on livestats, it seemed like there was some huge swings.  Brandeis was up by 12 at the half, but then Bowdoin came back to tie it or take the lead (not sure), and then Brandeis just crushed them down the stretch.  Is there anything that happened, other than Brandeis making shots, that caused the big shift at the end of the game?

Plattsburgh pulls it out in OT. Either school could host the sectional. I hope Amherst gets to host Richard Stockton, Brandeis and Plattsbugh.

In other news, Umass Dartmouth falls to the cinderall Coast Guard squad.

From the broadcast, it seemed like Rich Magee came off the bench to give them a big lift (second night in a row the bench has helped, Rexhepi last night).  From there, Mssrs. Coppens and Olson started drilling and the rest was academic. Give credit to Bowdoin for a good second half run, think they might have led by one before the deluge.

I was at the Brandeis v. Bowdoin game. Bowdoin came out a little nervous and Brandeis took advantage.  Bowdoin made a nice run in the second half but Brandeis was too much to handle.  Brandeis was deep, and they were good.  Bowdoin had a great season, probably the best in their history, but BraNEIS at home was too strong.  Congrats to Sargeaston, Fliegel, and Hippert who all had great careers and put the team on their shoulders.  Next year looks bright for Bowdoin with JAckson, Hauser, Sturgis, Lane, Sellew, and Phillips coming back next yr along with 2 outstanding recruits.  Goodluck guys...

Also Randy Defeo is coming back next yr, he had a great freshman yr.  He is awesome.  Randy and Hauser will make a great back court.

From a facility standpoint, I'm not sure this is true.
