Plattsburgh pulls it out in OT. Either school could host the sectional.

From a facility standpoint, I'm not sure this is true.

Brandeis might actually have the nicest facility of the three, and they certainly can hold more people (and they would fill it, there were over 2000 friday).  Would that at all play into the committee's mind, or does the fact that brandeis is technically like the third seed behind amherst and plattsburgh basically eliminate a chance at hosting?

Plattsburgh is hosting over Amherst, see the NCAA bracket with sectional hosts marked ##:

Well my weekend plans just shifted.

What did you mean by your post Pat? I have never seen Plattsburgh's facilities, but are they not up to par? It's not like LeFrak is the best gym in the North East, yet the NCAA committee put the sectionals there the past three years.

Hopefully see everyone down in Salem.

"PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Mar. 8, 2008) - The nationally ranked Plattsburgh State men's basketball team advanced to the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Tournament after a thrilling 83-77 overtime victory Saturday over a determined King's College squad before a sellout crowd of 1,000 at Memorial Hall."

A sellout crowd of 1,000? According to the D3hoops website, Amherst can hold 1800. Hasn't Amherst come pretty close to selling out the past couple sweet 16/elite 8's? Geographically I think its about even, Amherst and Brandeis would have to travel just as far to Rascal Platts, as Rascal Platts and John Richard Stockton would have to travel to Amherst/Brandeis. I think the kicker would have to be facilities, where Amherst and Brandeis have a clear edge capacity wise. What's the reasoning here? Anyone know?

That was my understanding but apparently it was good enough. They may have to clear the gym between games.

Plattsburgh is the higher seed and since travel is equal and the gym is apparently good enough, that's all that's needed.

I've never been to Plattsburgh's gym, but regardless of listed capacities, I can't imagine it's much smaller than Amherst.

Pat Coleman

Perhaps, but when Amherst puts up the bleachers underneath the one basket there is a significant difference in seating capacity.

I'll take your word for it.  They don't seem to fill it for the regionals anyway since all the students are on break.  The games I've been to that are full are always the games against Williams or the NESCAC tournament.

any suggestions for reasonably priced hotels in the plattsburgh area?

frank uible

I've been to LeFrak, and my eyeballs tell me that even with supplemental bleachers its seating capacity can't easily be made to exceed much over 600.

There are some nice ones.....in Montreal.

A quick search on line will show that Plattsburgh has a dozen or so hotels within 10 miles of campus.  Also several nice eateries... might try Arnie's downtown for some local flair or stick with Applebees or 99 steak house or Ground Round if you like chain food.

Plattsburgh isn't any worse than Amherst (as small towns go); it's just a little colder.
