I am confused why everyone is so dead set against Plattsburgh. I watched the Round of 16 in Canton, New York last year. There is a lot more to do in Plattsburgh than Canton. Believe me I have lived in both areas and Plattsburgh is better. The teams that came up there were Elms, Williams, Brockport and St. Lawrence. I watched the Round of 8 game between St. Lawrence and Brockport and picked up my ticket the night of the game. There were plenty of seats available. If the tourney can be played in Canton, (A LOT MORE REMOTE THAN PLATTSBURGH) It definitely can be played in Plattsburgh.

Bear, Plattsburgh did run in to SUNY - Purchase but Amherst had Southern Vermont on their schedule twice. I have seen Southern Vermont play and they couldn't have beaten Purchase even if Purchase started and played their last five guys off the bench. I am sure that a Southern Vermont rating would be higher than Purchase because of the league they are in. It would not be because they were a better team. Therefore I am a little skeptical about the Rating %'s
Apples to apples comparisons "would not include": comparing Canton, NY to Plattsburgh, NY. Canton was not an option to be a sectional host this year.

Apples to apples comparisons "getting warmer": comparing Southern Vermont (5-19) who Amherst beat by 45 points and 26 points, to Morrisville State (5-19) who Plattsburgh beat by 42 points and New Paltz State (6-19) who Plattsburgh beat by 13 points and 19 points.

Apples to apples comparisons "an acutal one": Plattsburgh beat Middlebury by 4. Amherst beat Middlebury by 17.

That 15-12 team made it in to the Tourney! They had to beat someone!!!!!!
I am looking forward to two Massachusetts teams playing hoop in your gym with a trip to this year's final four on the line.

I really don't think people are "dead set against Plattsburgh".  I think the New Englanders would prefer to stay at home rather than drive 6 hours to the Canadian boarder.  Logistically it kinda makes sense that  two  teams from Mass, one from NJ and one from upstate NY would meet somewhere in the middle - Mass.  However, Plattsburgh is the #1 seed in the East and that trumps 'deis and Amherst regional rankings.  I think it's that simple.  Arguing about the strength of Plattsburgh's schedule is a no win situation, IMO.  They play SUNYIT, Fredonia, New Paltz etc.  Twice.  Going undefeated is a great acomplishment and harder than most anyone realizes.  I think that is one area where the maturity and experience of Plattsburgh shows.  Their leaders, I am purely guessing here, didn't allow the kids to lose focus.  That is invaluable.  They have had a season for the ages and they have been rewarded.

You are right about the coaching staff making sure that the team was focused. It was a "Mantra" for the Cards. Coach Curle constantly talked about focus in all of his news conferences.

I have to agree with you regarding strength of schedule. Plattsburgh did play very good Brockport and Oswego teams but I am sure they don't compare to who Amherst had to go up against.

What way are you coming to Plattsburgh if you have to drive six hours? How far are you from Burlington, Vermont? I don't believe Boston is even a six hour drive from Plattsburgh.

I don't believe they have a consolation bracket for the round of sixteen? So it's going to be pretty difficult to see two Massachuseutts team playing in our gym!! :D ???
You will be coming to Apple Country. Maybe you can pick up some "sour ones" for the trip home on Friday evening!!!!!!!!!!!! You might have to dig a little under the snow!?

Comparitive scores don't mean much. Only comparison - Plattsburgh beat Middlebury and Amherst beat Middlebury!

Richard Stockton vs. SUNY-Plattsburgh - Saturday evening 7 p.m. Maybe you will be home in time to pick up the D3Hoops.com radio feed!! ;D

I never said anything about the coaching staff keeping the team focused.  While I am certain they are a fine staff (as evidenced by 3 consecutive SUNYAC championships) what I was referring to was Williams and Gorham.  Both are in the 25-27 age range and come from DI and DII programs respectively.  That kind of maturity, when compared to 18-22 year olds, is a distinct advantage.

Also, if you were talking to me about heading to Plattsburgh, you got the wrong guy.  I'll be headed to PA.  Besides, the only reason to go that way would be to ride the Chasm, and it's too damn cold to do that.

zola

People of the world, relax.

The facts:

1. Regardless of the host, somebody travels.
2. Plattsburg went undefeated in their conference.
3. I thought the SUNYAC was the weakest it's been this decade - and I saw every team play multiple times.
4. So what? Who cares?
5. Plattsburg is the No. 1 seed and gets to host.
6. If you can't enjoy a trip to Plattsburg, you do not know how to have fun.
7. Several great B&B's, a couple of terrific restaurants mentioned in previous posts, and if you ask the locals, you can find a fantastic, out of the way breakfast spot with homemade breads and jams. Cardinal's Coach Curle eats there.

While you're there - if the tournament isn't enough...

8. Ski Whiteface
9. Visit Lake Placid.
10. Visit Montreal if you can extend your stay.

11. Both the Amherst and Plattsburg arenas (?), gyms (?) are crap.
12. Again, so what? Again, who cares?
13. It's about the game,  not the building - and fans make the atmosphere.
14. The Cards have two players you will want to see.
15. Amherst goes to Salem

Well, no they don't but I think they would at least have both Bradeis and Amherst somewhere in the top 10. The two schools are an hour and a half apart! Looking quickly through Plattsburg's schedule, their only NCAA caliber win seemed to be Middlebury while Amherst and Brandeis have a combined 10+ wins against NCAA teams. I hope for the sake of ridiculousness, that its an Amherst-Brandeis final this weekend (which I would bet on anyways) playing 5+ hours away on the Canadian border in front of only their parents while their student bodies listen to a spotty d3cast broadcast.

I think the NCAA may have decided for once to follow their criteria.  Plattsburgh has the only undefeated regional record in the country.  If you look on D-III hoops they are ranked #1 on the SOS measurement.

Their non-conference schedule compares in W-L to the other three teams in the regionals, all played out of conference teams with a 57% win %, and Plattsburgh's was dropped by an unexpected game vs. SUNY Purchase (3-22) when they were upset in a post-break game at Union, otherwise Plattsburgh would have had a higher non-conference win % than the other three teams.

In conference, the Cards were undefeated & won both the regular season and the conference tournament and were the first team since Potsdam's 60 game winning streak team (86-87) to do that trifecta.  Amherst DID lose in the semis of its conference tournament.

I also know that the New York contingent was pretty unhappy three years ago when three New York teams with a combined record of (76-7) including an undefeated team, had to truck (in a blizzard) to Amherst, which acted like it could care less about their visitors, (no concessions, poor parking, not hotels close to the venue) and did frankly a lousy job of hosting the sectional, not to mention losing the first night.

Go Cards

Not sure about the hotel situation...there are plenty in the Amherst area...at least 5 w/in 5 minutes of the school....I certainly hope the people of Plattsburgh adhere to the golden rule. At Amherst, I think the last two years was much better than the year you are talking about.

You keep asking about hotels. Yesterday afternoon I left the above quote for you on this board, the 2008 Men's NCAA board and on the UAA board. I included 6 hotels all within 5 minutes of Plattsburgh's Memorial Hall gym. Read my post. I gave you restaurants and the phone # to get tickets. I'm trying to help all you guys out, and will answer any of your questions, but if you're not going to read what I've posted I guess I'm wasting my time.
Also the tickets go on sale Tuesday morning. You can buy a ticket for Friday or a ticket for Saturday or a ticket for both days. They are not being sold as a package so you have to buy your Sat. ticket without knowing if your team will even be playing on Sat. But if you don't  buy Sat's ticket right away you'll be closed out.

Thanks for your support. Cardinal's will have their hands full this weekend. Both Amherst and Brandeis are great teams and we might be facing the stongest team on Friday. Brandeis dealt Amherst 1 of their 2 regional losses and beat Bowdoin who gave Amherst their other loss. Nobody seems to be giving Richard Stockton much of a chance against Amherst and on paper they seem to be up against it. Stockton only has one starter 6'5" and the rest are all 6'0" to 6'3". Up against Amherst's  bigs will really be a challenge. Can you say "Chaminade".

Plattsburg blues?

All this whining on the board over a 6 hour drive? As my tag announces, I drive from NY to the Nescac games, and my boys are the Colby White Mules. Six hours and 15 minutes at 75 mph if you don't pee. 6 1/2 to the metropolis of Farmington, Maine for a non-conference game. Sometimes I go back and forth the same day to see one game. Shut up and drive. These are playoff games, be happy your team is in them!

wow....no complaints from me....gonna be there by 2 take in the a part of the country I haven't seen then  watch jeff basketball.

Mr. Ypsi

Wow, either you guys are wuss drivers or grossly misinformed.  There is not a spot in Mass (including Provincetown) which is 6 hours from Plattsburgh.

Amherst and Brandeis may be the favorites (that's what it says on my pickems, but I had Guilford and Whitewater in my Final Four, so what the hell do I know?!), but by the d3 criteria Plattsburgh is legitimately the host, so deal with it.

Plattsburgh is a nice little town (I've only been in it once, but often gone near it on my way from Michigan to Maine); if you can get over yourselves, you'll have a good time there.

Despite my pickems (which are dead anyway), I'm now rooting for Plattsburgh, just to spite the NESCAC and UAA posters who are being so rudely arrogant.

Sorry, I didn't make the connection to the other post . Thought you were saying you weren't sure of the hotel situation in Plattsburgh but that Amherst had plenty, meaning we might not.
When you take the ferry from Vermont to Plattsburgh bring your binoculars and a camera. You never know when Champy, the Lake Champlain Monster might pop up and greet you. And since you're arriving early, you really should try one of those first 2 restaurants I mentioned. I'm sure you'll be famished after that long trip.
