Looks like I won't be able to make it down for Friday's game.  The entire staff will be huddled around the computer in the back hoping the Jeffs can take care of business and give us a reason to close the diner and head down to Salem.

As a member of the greater Amherst community, I would suggest to all those going down to Salem to be politely arrogant - instead of "rudely."

Despite my pickems (which are dead anyway), I'm now rooting for Plattsburgh, just to spite the NESCAC and UAA posters who are being so rudely arrogant.
change your mind or are you going to root for a hope-ursinus championship game.

Please understand that I have nothing against either Amherst or Brandeis - I was offended by the whining about playing in Plattsburgh, who had earned the hosting fair and square.  I'm neutral on the Amherst-Ursinus game (if I do end up rooting, I generally have a soft spot for the underdog); as a Michigander, I'm pulling for Hope to win it all.

Leo

Greetings from Ursinus College and the Centennial Conference.

My congrats to Amherst for making it back to the Final Four to defend their National Championship.

An earlier posting from NESCAC1 on 3/16 commented about Ursinus's lack of size and that the Jeffs should have it easy to move on to the Championship Game. While Amherst's loss to Bowdoin College in the tournament was a shocker, how can a "smaller" Bowdoin team, compared to Ursinus pull off the upset. Granted, shooting 57% to Amherst's 45% was the key factor. Acording to NESCAC1's assessment of bigger men overwhelming the smaller team, why did that not happen against Bowdoin?Just a thought.

Good luck on Friday.

Quote from: deputy dog on March 18, 2008, 10:08:48 AMCan you tell me who Shalvoy plays for? Is this the same Chris Shalvoy from the Rochester, New York area? I saw him play at an AAU tourney a few years back. I thought he had a fairly good game!!

Yep.  Captain of the Williams team now.  Had a solid four years there.

Bowdoin pulled off that win because their "bigs," while significantly smaller than Amherst's, are tremendously good defensively.  They have a forward (Andrew Sargeantson) who's an excellent defensive stopper, and a center (Jordan Fliegel) who's really good down low and rebounds well.  Amherst's big men Walters/Hopkins/Jones shot a combined 8 for 27.  Also Sargeantson had 7 rebounds in that game and Fliegel 6.

Glad to see an Ursinus poster around here.

Congratulations to those selected to the All Sectional Team. I think Amherst could have had another member on the team (#52 Jones) but it was nice to see they picked some one from each partcipating school.

Haha.  Hopkins doesn't lack offensive rebounding ability.  If he's not getting offensive rebounds, it's because his team isn't missing shots.  And last time I checked, that was a good thing.

This doesn't make a lot of sense. Even if the team is shooting at a 60% clip, there are still a lot of missed shots...

After looking at photo's of the Brandies - Bowdoin game and some photo's of the Amherts gym I don't believe there sites were "Markedly" better than Plattsburgh. Only plus would have been a little bigger crowd at Amherst. But then again they were on break so I am sure there would have been some empty bleachers.

Not really.  Unless they take 100 shots per game.  I think any coach would be more than happy with 60% shooting.

I'm not saying a coach wouldn't be happy with 60%. I am saying that the actual offensive rebounding stat is a pretty good measure of offensive rebounding ability, regardless of whether or not the team shoots 40% or 60% from the field.

eclinchy

You don't think having 1.5 times as many chances for rebounds is a big deal?  I'm no math major, but... it seems kinda significant.

Granted that's a really extreme example.  Whatever.  My original post was intended as a joke anyway...

La Verdad

eclinchy,

When is your piece on Amherst coming out?

Pat Coleman

Tonight. Just giving the piece we put in this afternoon a little more front page time.

An Amherst front page piece?
hahahahaha oh man that preseason byline back and forth was priceless.

I am looking forward to reading up on Amherst. Eclinchy is legit knowledgeable and I hear Amherst has a good squad this year.
