Not buying Amherst as the favorite -- not yet, anyway. They haven't beaten anyone worth writing home about, and Midd's only losses have come without Smith at full strength. Let's be patient.

Old Guy

One-sided win tonight for Middlebury over a weak Castleton State (VT)  team - 102-71.

Did you know: Stan Van Gundy (Orlando Magics) coached at Castleton from '83-'86 (68 wins-18 losses).

Smith has an infected elbow. His absence means more time for Sharry: 8.5 points/game, 65% fgp (20/31), 84% ftp (19-23), with
six rebounds/game in 16 minutes/game. Pretty good numbers for a rookie.

Bates 84-Thomas80

Bates grabbed a win from Thomas college, but the gab is not nearly as big as it needs to be against a relative unknown.  Bates was lights out in the first half (.714 fg%) but forgot about the defensive half of the game, and was only up 46-42 at the half.

Coming back down to earth in the second half Bates finished at 59% from the field, and with mediocre foul shooting was unable to pull away from Thomas.  Thankfully, despite having off days from the foul line, and on defense, the stellar first half offense was just enough for Bates to run away with the win.

Cheers,

NESCAC1 should be a PR man for Amherst. ONE win v a decent team and it's final four time. Amherst looked better and I'll be the first one to agree that IF!! they shoot better than 66% of their three's and IF!!Glenn Wong doesn't miss, then they will certainly make the NCAA Tourney.
Lasell has two really good players-big but thin big men with range. Waller and Holmes seem to be playing better and Barise is poised for a frosh. Baskauskas is actually close to a go to now and Wheeler has really good range as does #12 for Lasell. Holsey has improved a lot! from last year.
I hope I don't burn in hell for saying this but I like watching Connor Meehan. No he's not as good as Olson but he's inventive and has a feel for the game.
The frosh are coming along but they're still sophs regardless of potential. Maybe by February? Assuming Smith comes back I still like Middlebury.

As much as I love winning OT games, I hate jinxing my team! Thankfully, Williams also lost...no hate, just didn't want to be the sole loser on the night. The Camels made a 20-5 second half run to cut the lead to 3, but it was not enough. Karis was 0-5 from three and Veras and Bernier were no better. Porter had another good game...I'm glad somebody else has seen the frosh play.
I liked the Purple Rain comment.

Any word out of Bowdoin/Colby?

ne-ball

amauris quezada from tufts had a good night, obviously. in the past, he's been known to have been fond of any and all possible shots (backin the day referred to as a "shot nut"). haven't seen him in a while but if his shot selection has improved, he could be dangerous. he loves to score. we'll see.

I was not at the CC v Wheaton game last night, but what do people think of Wheaton's Coppola? He had 26 against the Camels and was last year's New England Rookie of the year. He scored 500 points as a freshmen. Based on my math, he is poised to score about 2,000 points over four years.

Excellent math. I will never again doubt the value of a CC education.

(sorry, couldn't resist)

Sen,

Amherst won't make 2/3 of their 3s and GWong will miss but the Jeffs will still make the NCAA's.

There's no shame in liking CMee.  He's very good.

Holsey is a hard worker so I am not surprised he has improved, but he also had to play behind a lot of guys last year. I am not sure that what you see/hear now can be attributed to getting better. He was working with more skill than most gave him credit for.

NY Hoopster

Nescac1 and CCsalive;

Colby is now using a two guard, three big man line-up instead of the three guard offense they used most of last year. The main reason that Choice has less points is that Mike Russell has been getting the ball a lot and scoring like crazy down low. He has has a 28 and a 26 point game, and leads the Mules in scoring, and has done a great job rebounding. He is only a sophomore, and had been hampered by injuries at the end of last season. Coach Whitmore has been giving significant minutes to a very talented 6'6'' Freshman Kyle Donovan, who has also been getting a lot of touches making blocks, and rebounding. Choice was often the only consistent scoring option in the post last year, but this year the ball is going to be spread around a bit more. Look for Choice to get the ball more when the conference games begin.
They have been starting Artie Cutrone at point, who started at that position last year, and have elevated Justin Sherman to a starting guard position from his role as sixth man last year. Sherman is extremely quick to the rim, and is a strong rebounder, and has contributed to Colby's success so far on the boards.
This team is working to learn a new offense, and the result has been some inconsistent performances. They have a tournament at home this weekend which may give them  them the opportunity to gel. Even though they lost a great shooter with the graduation of Mark Gaudet, I think this team is significantly stronger than last year's team.

Quite a demotion for Mac Simpson, isn't it? Pretty strange development, I'd say...
