Here at the end of 2005, i was thinking about all the Del Val women who have graduated & are still very much involved in basketball, namely Alisa DiBonaventura at Widener, Kristen "Hank" Henry at Del Val, Lorie Kahlil (played with DVC for 2 years) at Centennary, & on the high school level, Jackie Hartzell & Bridget Golden.  It's a great testimony to the program.  Happy Healthy NewYear to everyone at the post, all players & coaches.  GO DEL VAL!!!!!

I find it a bit perplexing that an unranked team (Luther) hammers the then #1 team in the country (Millikin) & when I pointed out that it's somewhat hard to believe that nobody saw some potential in the Luther team to have them ranked anywhere in the Top 25, the response was, now that they finally defeated "somebody"...they will get that honor. Fair enough I guess, my question now is...who exactly has Brandeis "played" and or defeated that warrents a #2 ranking? Could it be the Big win vs. that basketball power Wellesley or perhaps that huge win against perennial power...Endicott??? This is exactly why one should not place too much emphasis on these rankings...they make no sense until the final week.

Good luck Lady Monarchs in your tournament this weekend. With your long vacation and trip, you girls are ready to rock and roll :-*

Congratulations to Messiah's Eli Cook for earning a spot on D3's latest team of the week.

They make NO sense? Hmm, while I myself am not convinced Brandeis is a Top 5 team, I find it hard to believe they make NO sense.

What Brandeis has going for it is having four starters back from a team that went 23-4. Until they prove otherwise on the floor, you have to have the basic assumption that they're a good team. I wouldn't, and I don't, rank Brandeis No. 2. But that's a long way from saying the poll makes no sense.

Polls..I love them. They make for great conversation, speculation, and game anticipation. Take last years Scranton-Bowdoin game:If I recall correctly they were the top 2 ranked teams in the country, it just added to the hype and anticipation, etc. So keep the polls coming, just make my Lady Royals number 1...Okay, perhaps not just yet.......

The Lady Monarch Classic at King's is set for Friday and Saturday.

Messiah (10-1) plays Salisbury (7-1) at 6:00 p.m. with King's (5-5) playing a young Potsdam State (1-7) team (nine of 12 players are freshmen) at 8:00 p.m.

The consolation is Saturday at 1:00 pm with the title game ste for 3:00 pm

The King's student radio station WRKC, 88.5 FM plans to web cast the games involving King's both days. The link to the web cast is http://my.kings.edu/ and click on "WRKC LIVE".

I am especially looking forward to the Messiah-Salisbury game.  Can Salisbury's "40-minutes of hell", full-court press, run and gun, mass substitution, wear-you-down, style bother Messiah, a team with tremendous size and experience?  Should be one heck of a game.

Thanks for info on live-cast as I am not traveling this week end to Wilkes-Barre

Good luck Ladies in your tournament... Potsdam is an Adirondack town :)

Stay healthy and play good ball

I am writing to comment on the All-Decade (or century or whatever) list of WBB coaches that was compiled for the d3 web site participants to vote on.  While I think you have assembled a great group of coaches here, it seems to me there is a glaring omission in the absence of Moravian's coach, Mary Beth Spirk, on the ballot.  She has won year in and year out--went to and hosted a National Championship, and has established herself on the national level on more than one occasion, including WBCA NATIONAL Eoach of the Year .  I realize that there was a committee formed to put the ballot together, but I propose a write in option.  Any way that can happen?  I know that many of Mary Beth's colleagues would agree with me that she deserves to be in the elite company of the likes of Coach Strong, Coach Kauffman, et al. KUDOS to all the nominees!

Interesting that on the selections for the all-time D-3 team that Shelley Parks is listed as an Elizabethtown player.  To those not around enough to recall, Parks played at E-town and transferred to Scranton for "at least" her last two years and was on the 1985 Scranton national championship team. She was also D-III national player of the year as a Lady Royal.  Why on Earth is she listed as an E-town player rather than a Scranton player?

And where the heck is Deanna Kyle?. The 1995 National Player of the Year for Scranton and the best player the MAC will ever see............I know she played just two years in D-III after starting out at D-I St. Joseph's, so is there some type of criteria regarding number of years played?

That Salisbury-Messiah game just lost a tad of its luster as Salisbury leading scorer Monica Merkel (22.6 ppg, 7.4 rebs, 3.4 assists) is out with an illness and will not play either day.  I have heard she started out her career at D-I Hartford and played last season at a community college in Maryland. Was looking forward to seeing her play. Athletic 5-10 guards are hard to come by in D-3.

The different style of play from each team should still make it interesting to watch......

Knightstalker

sounds like Salisbury is running the Grinnell system.

Kyle is on the ballot and Parks is listed as both schools. I'm looking at the bio pages:
http://web1.ncaa.org/womens25/teamVoting_BBall_Div3Bios.jsp

Two schools probably don't fit in that narrow ballot spot.

Salisbury has been at King's tournament nine of the last 10 years so I have seen them play often.  They are not like Grinnell in that they do not focus on three-point shooting.  They will take the first best shot they see and it may be a feed inside, but they are not at all bashful about launching three-pointers if they have looks. A lot of points off turnovers and transition....

OK Pat, thanks on the Kyle note.....did not see her on the list so I must have missed it.
