NCAA new playoff format--Pat--can you tell me if I underfstand this correctly?

In years past Scranton may have had a first round bye and then host a 2nd round game on a Sat evening. This year it will be different..Only 1 team in the country will receive a first round bye---63 teams in the new format. The 1st and 2nd rnds will be conducted on a Fri-Sat at the home, presumably, of the highest rated team amongst the 4? Is this scenario correct?

Yep, that's right.

More is in the Daily Dose posting from the other day.

Oiler: Based on that sequence, Desales will be relentless in trying to knock off the Lady Royals because this one game is the difference between them being at home against a team they've handled quite easily & hitting the road vs. Scranton once again.  I'm sure the Lady Royals understand the significance & will be ready.

I was at the Scranton-Desales slugfest today..what a game--Scranton wins 63-60 but they were down by 10. After opening a 13-3 lead Desales came back to lead 38-28. That is a 35-15 swing....But that is typical when these teams meet. Over the last 6-7 years I can recall countless times were the score went back and forth like crazy. I did not expect it today though. Desales is a young team but they brought their A game.  3 observations about the game. 1-Scranton showed the mettle to persevere and this should help them down the stretch. 2. Leighann Burke is clearly the Freshmen of the Year. 3. Allison Matt deserves some serious All American consideration.

More in depth 1--Last year it was apparent that Scranton had the talent to make the final 4 but it was the Desales game that showed they had the fortitude. They were down by 8 and won in dbl ot. Similiar this year, clearly they have the talent and I beleive today they showed the same fortitude.

2--I had thought that Fiorino from Kings was the Frosh winner but Burke is the class of the class. Lutz had more points today but Burke will be a force to be reckoned with over the next 3 yrs..

3-Matt All-American...Clearly Mellody will repeat so it may be difficult for voters to have two teamates honored but it is warranted in this case...

Now let the games begin..and the irony, on Wed I will miss only my 2nd home game in the last 10yrs as I will be out of state, so Sat night begins a new streak, hopefully we win on Wed??

Hey people, told you all last night that DeSales was HOT!  It's  comforting to see when the game is really on the line that Coach Strong plays just 10 people , more like the rest of us in the league, though we're down to 7 or 8 who consistently play.  Whatever is ailing Shannon, i hope she's ready to roll by Wednesday night.  Been following the Aggies since l998 but didn't realize that they had not won at Lyco since the 90-91 season.  Was very glad they pulled it off today - GO DEL VAL!!!!!

kate what is your point ?This is the first time i heard from you since Scranton beat you.

kate

U of S, i have posted since Scranton beat the livin daylights out of the Aggies - check it out please.  Also Scranton wasn't getting good competition in the league, and you know it.  After i saw DeSales cream us, i realized that they were just plain getting better & would be very capable of giving you guys a fight.  You know that once you're in the dance you will run into more teams like DeSales & better.   It is GREAT to have a huge bench, but in clutch games, ya still rely on a trusted few.  That's my point - good luck in Wednesday night's game.

I figured it was time to post from the other side of the conference.  Falcon fans have been pretty much quiet on the board this year.  Nicki Lobach had a breakout game against Widener and Eli Cook is still Cook, excellent all around player. Still not sure how good this team can be. Will know soon enough. Good luck Falcons.

Amazing come from behind win for Messiah against Widener.  :)

Kate, I agree with you.  At some point, Coach Strong has to get his top players used to playing 25 plus minutes a game.  It is great that they are going to be well rested for the dance, having played about 20 plus minutes a game.  However, this could also backfire for you as they might not be used to playing so long in a game, thus being slightly deconditioned.  Not to mention not used to playing in close game situations.  However, I know the Lady Royals and I know Coach Strong, they are well conditioned in practice, and they play hard in practice.  So, when Coach Strong puts two minutes on the clock  and puts one team down by ten, they take this situation seriously and they play hard, all around.  That being said, I'm still happy to see that Coach is starting to get a "regular" rotation with the girls cause that means that Selection Sunday is near, and I can't wait!! Go Lady Royals!!!

Hard to believe no one posted about the Widener/Messiah game and its ending.  The most amazing comeback I've ever seen.  Widener had a 5 point lead with 15 seconds left.  Messiah had the ball.  Lauren Schurr shot a three,  missed, Messiah got the rebound, Eli Cook shot a three and made it with 0.53 seconds left...that's a half a second!  Timeout Messiah.  Widener has the ball under the Messiah basket with 0.53 seconds left.  They throw it long, but noone on either team touches it.  Ball goes back to the where it was inbounded.  Still 0.53 left.  Neither team has a time out, Messiah runs a inbound pick play, Eli Cook catches the ball under the basket and shoots to tie the game at the buzzer.  Unbelievable.  Run that scenerio a 1000 times and it would never happen again.
Overtime was all Messiah based on the momentum swing.   Both teams had their conference bid locked up, but the end of the game was as nuts as it gets.
