I put Dubuque in the bottom three in the IIAC.

Based on ? Did you see them play at all last year? They have one of the best ,young middle infields arround (iiac).

That's a start.  What about the rest of the team?

Dubuque does not have any top-notch arms returning this season. Their pitching does not compare to the rest of the IIAC. Middle infielders are nice, but what can they do when liners are screaming into the gaps and over their heads?

Top notch no agreed but.....I personaly saw no lights out pitching from any team in this conference. They UD have suffered terrible defense for a while (long).Strong up the middle is the anchor to any defense, a well known fact. Center field is solid, 1st base is good and they picked up a legit 3rd baseman.

Agreed pitching did cost them quite a few woulda coulda shoulda wins last year. They did show good signs of developing young arms and a couple of upper classmen stepped up and matured.

Just my opinion but....UD will turn a few heads this year and, it wont be their own whip lash watchin balls scream over their heads.Cant wait.We shall see.

I hope you are right as the IIAC needs a third team to step up and match Wartburg and Buena Vista to give the conference more national exposure and credibility.

You cant be serious!  How about the fact that UD has finished 8th or 9th In the IIAC, eight out of the last ten years.  How about the fact that UD finished 8th or 9th in just about every statistical category in the IIAC in 2010.  Being young is a bad excuse for poor performance.  You won't be a better baseball player just because you are one year older.  You are talking about Danna as "one of the best young middle infielders around"?  I will give you that he can hit, but as a middle infielder?  His .850 fielding percentage with 27 errors doesn't even qualify him as an "average" middle infielder.  In fact if you compare him to every other starting SS in the IIAC (2010) he ranks last in most fielding statistics.  There were plenty of other freshmen that played well in 2010.

The IIAC with "no lights out pitchers"  held those fighting Spartans to a impressive .251 average and .360 slugging % in 2010

Talk to us at the end of the year if UD finishes above 8th or 9th.

:) Nothing fires up UPANDIN like a good IIAC discussion. Welcome back... I have missed you on this board.

Its early, but I couldn't hold out any longer after that UD post.  Pappa I liked the preview, it will be interesting to see how BV does with some of the key players they lost.  Could be a 2 team race with BV and Wartburg in the IIAC.  Trying to keep my ear to the ground on the newcomers to the league and region.

bbplayer, you made some subjective statements about the team, which is fine; upandin raised some legitimate questions about your assertions based on objective data -- the stats.  It remains to be seen who will be right at the end of the season -- that's why they play the games.  Stooping to name calling will not build anyone's case, or credibility, on the boards.

I wont start name calling, what I can say is this......Aside from the obvious stats. Some friends and I saw your Spartans play last year in Cedar Rapids.  No... of course not in the IIAC tournament, but in a competitive 24-0 loss to Coe College.  I didn't have to stay long.  It was 17-0 in the second inning.  Your "best young middle infielder" was 0-3 at the plate and dropped 2 routine fly balls in the first inning.  It looked like a high school JV team.  I didn't come back for day 2 of the series I saw enough of that "head turning team".  Am I Uninformed?  Maybe...... Am I Wrong?  I guess we will see.  It would be good for the IIAC if Dubuque and Cornell could compete a little.  Maybe you can take this bulletin board material back to your teammates tomorrow at practice.  But I'm sure a few of them might agree with me.

UPANDIN- I have Central as the third team in the IIAC. Could they be a legit darkhorse in the league? On paper, they bring a lot back from a team that was out front early last year, but faded down the stretch. They are a team that scares me a bit (and should scare others and not just in the IIAC). I see Central and the CCIW's North Park as two teams that may be on the verge of breaking through in 2011.

Thoughts on Central?

My guess:

1. BV
2. Wartburg
3. Central
4-7. Coe, Luther, Loras, Simpson
8-9. Dubuque, Cornell

Baseball is not a game that builds character, it is a game that reveals it.

upandin

I agree on Central.   They are a solid team.  If I had to pick one area they are good and not great, it's on the mound.  Their top guy (Eisenman) is tuff, but after that just ok.  Furlong might be the player of the year in the conference, and Lackey can be like a man playing with boys at times. They could definitely win this league.

I see it like this:
1.Wartburg
2.BV
3.Central
4.Loras
5.Coe
6.Simpson
7.Luther
8.Dubuque
9.Cornell

Wartburg and BV is a toss up,  they play a midweek home and home
BV has a huge home field advantage on the turf
Central also plays BV midweek home and home
Loras has veteran players, could be a rebound year for them
Coe has some good players still around, but lost some horses on the mound
Simpson will be in it and competitive
I think Luther is going to be the odd team out this year.  Not much going outside of Reynolds
UD will be better than Cornell
