Just checked in with conference schedules.  It looks like most teams have found ways to get some early games in, even despite the metrodome being out of commission.

Curious for Dubuque (opening March 12) and Simpson and Luther (opening March 18)....wonder if their schedules will change at all to begin a little earlier.  Those opening March 18th are more than three weeks behind a lot of other teams in the area.

Second point of curiosity:  We never hear/see about any of the incoming freshmen until the season is well underway and they are making an impact in conference play.  While I understand most information would probably have to come from a knowledgeable source (and not just a fan), does anybody know of any first years that will likely make an impact this season?

Those do seem really late for teams to get started. Im sure that they will be going somewhere over their respective spring breaks in order to get some games in. Looks like the weather might allow for some good early season ball. Just wondering what others were thinking about the new bat regulations? With the new BBCOR bats it could come down to who has the best defense and staff this year. Not sure how these bats compare to the BESR models but what I've been hearing about them doesn't favor the hitters. May see some big reduction in home run totals this year...

Yah a bit of a late start for some. The "Dome" caving in did not help! It did look cool on film though  ;). UD is headed south next week to tune up for the season as Im sure are the rest of the "late" starters. With as many games as all have scheduled Im sure they all will be ready for the fierce confrence battle to begin.

Your question about the the new bat ruel is awsome! We will now see who the the Baseball players at all levels of college play are! Let the games begin. Can you say " Hit the opposite way or bunt for a single? Bunt at all! Those thugs brought up to swing for the fences with no clue how to play the game will be LONG GONE!!

I understand that it is still early, but it seems that the "new" bats have had a positive impact and not exceeded the objective.

While the game is now safer because of lowered exit speeds off of the bats, the offensive side of the ball has not disappeared and has actually become more normal in my opinion compared to the sometimes ridiculous numbers being put up in the past.

Others opinions on the weakened bats?

31 Runs yesterday for the Kohawks at Monmouth?  WOW!

It appears that the top two-thirds of the IIAC is off and running. I am still not sure what to think of an 8-1 Dubuque squad. Two nice wins (St. Joeseph's and North Park), but also a handfull of wins against some average at best programs. Blackburn is currently 0-10 and a DH vs Crown today should easily be another pair of Ws for Dubuque. They could move to 10-1 without anyone noticing.

This could provide a great race for the six playoff spots in the IIAC.

Luther moved to 7-1 yesterday on the young season.  They still have 4 games left on the spring trip before the conference games this weekend at Cornell.  I have not seen the team yet this spring since they were not able to play those Metrodome games.  The pitching numbers look pretty strong so far, but I don't know if any of the teams that they have played will be strong teams this year.  I would rather be winning these games against unknown teams than losing them! ;D

They still have some hitters, but I want to see in conference action how the frontline Luther starting pitchers fare.  They lost the best hitter and pitcher from last year's team, and the 2010 Norse were not near as deep as 2009 or 2007.

I noticed only two teams that have played some games against traditionally strong competition so far.  Wartburg looks like they played the Oles four times already while Simpson played some of the UW schools.  Other than B.V. it appears as if everyone else has some questions to answer going into this weekend.

Good to see that Cornell already played some home games since the Norse go there this week.

Conference schedule starts up this weekend with the most compelling match-up being Wartburg vs Coe. We will also see if Dubuque is actually a good team when they take on some actual competition now that conference starts up.
My predictions:
Coe takes 2 of 3 from Wartburg -  hard to have the Coe losing that series in Cedar   Rapids when they are hitting .384 as a team
Luther sweeps Cornell - could be another rough year for the Rams
Central takes 2 of 3 from Loras - Central has lot coming back this year and will be tough down the road too
Simpson takes 2 of 3 from Dubuque - series is at Simpson and we will see how the Dubuque staff can do against Johnson and company

Any other opinions?!

Dubuque moves to 10-1 after taking a pair from Crown yesterday 11-4 and 6-3. If they can be a legitmate player in the IIAC, it could make things VERY interesting as the season progresses.

Here is a recap of the UD and Loras games from yesterday from the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald...http://www.thonline.com/article.cfm?id=315596

I'm sure UD will now see some losses add up now that the conference season is starting.  But...the Spartans seem to have added some decent pitching for this year, and that was a major problem for them last season.  Add in that 33 of their 44 person roster is from Iowa/Wisconsin/Illinois...I think that will help in the cold spring season we play in.  Cali and Florida kids didn't seem to like playing baseball in our cold weather.

I think UD will have a say this year in who wins the conference.  The Spartans won't be an automatic win this season and that could mess up another teams plans if they take a loss or two to UD.

Don't leave out SUNY Plattsburg whom they disposed of in great fashion. How far will a little more experience take them....? Lets see.
