Floyd in Iowa City

Congrats to Wartburg for winning the conference tourney.  Good luck in the regional.  I assume this Knight squad is fairly young and should be together for another season or two.

It was a good run by Loras in the league tourney.

MIDWEST CONFERENCE HISTORY BOOK: NO ORDINARY CONFERENCE

George Drake, a former Midwest Conference student-athlete and 1956 Grinnell College graduate, has culminated a project he calls "a labor of love" with the completion of the 100-page soft cover book No Ordinary Conference, an introspective history of the Midwest Conference. The Midwest Conference office is making the book available to the general public at a discounted price via the Order Form linked below for a limited time only (a small number of copies may be available at full price after the ship date). Orders are expected to ship in September.

Drake, who remains a professor at his alma mater, teamed with 2001 Grinnell grad John Aerni to provide a unique look at the league's history through interviews with Midwest Conference student-athletes and unprecedented access to league minutes.

No Ordinary Conference includes the accounts of numerous student-athletes and chronicles over 80 years of history from the league's formation through the men's and women's conference unification and beyond. No Ordinary Conference also features a 34-page photo gallery of some of the conference's all-time great athletes, coaches and administrators.

Heard a rumor while in Storm Lake the other day that Dekker has left BV to pitch at Northwest Missouri State.  Can anyone confirm this?  Also heard that Eddie has lost some of his other guys due to being kicked out of school because of grades.  It's a shame that some don't see grades as essential in college....

A very reliable source told me that he was transfering to Northwest Missouri State as well.  It is my understanding that he pitched against and beat them early in the season.  From that point forward he assumed he was better than BV and was packing his bags.

My source also said there were some other questions about Dekker regarding his mental toughness and his own self image.  As it might have been a bit inflated.

Sad to hear that they might be loosing other players as well.  I seemed as if Coach Eddie had built a group of good young talent.

I spoke with an old coach of his yesterday.  To my understanding is that he honored his commitment to BV his senior year of high school since he had already given his word when larger schools started coming after him and offering money.  I guess they were kind of let down when he went D3, thought that he should have gone to a larger school for his own sake and future.  Coach also said he was never entirely happy while at BV when they spoke, just got to be to small of a place for him and was costing too much money, but that he felt bad for having let down the team.

I've never heard anything about him having a inflated self image.  When I watched him in high school he was never outspoken on the field, or seemed to act like he was the best thing on the field.  Just looked like a kid that loved to play the game.  Mental toughness is something that he will need to continue to improve, but if he does, he's got a future ahead of him.

On another note, I heard Coe picked up a few transfers as well for this season.  Any of you Kohawk faithful know who it was that they picked up?

If you are saying that you spoke with Denny Barton or Mike Cook, then I would not trust them as far as I could throw either of them.  I played against them in high school and needless to say and mixed emotions regarding their principals.

So your telling me that a coach with 630+ wins, 10+ state tournament trips with 2 championships, and a coach that was up for national high school coach of the year this year doesn't have good principals?  Where did you go to high school then if you don't mind me asking?

I saw Dekker throw a couple of times this summer and the kid can definately throw the baseball.  Him going to Northwest was also influenced (IMO) by playing with the Northwest pitching coach this summer.

Now, while Dekker can throw the crap out of the ball, he has no future in baseball without learning how to mix in some legitimate offspeed stuff.  For him to say/think he is above D3 because he can throw 90 should be a slap in the face to anyone that knows anything about D3 baseball.  If he was such a dominant force in the Iowa Conference he should put up better numbers than:

3-3,  3.22 ERA, 36.1 IP, 36 Hits, 25 BB, 43 Ks, .248 BAA, 1.68 WHIP

Look, the kid is really good, but not a super stud.

1. Wartburg
2. Simpson
3. Coe
4. Loras
Who cares about Luther.... and who ever else is in the conference... lets be honest the other teams dont even have a chance.... i mean 2-4 dont even have a chance this year because Wartburg is just too dominate in every category... with them returning 13 seniors i believe every IIAC team should be worried about them.  Anybody else have any other predictions..  We all know that the whoever does the preseason predictions for the IIAC hates WArtburg because of their tradition and wont have them predicted to win conference but who cares what they think... Wartburg has proved them wrong for the past 12 years soon to be 13.

Knight- Welcome to the board and quit being so arrogant . Wartburg is good and no one disputes that, but being the top dog in a conference that is relatively weak (with one or two exceptions) is nothing to brag about when the goal is to be one of the big dogs on a national level.
Baseball is not a game that builds character, it is a game that reveals it.

Yes Wartburg has been a perennial leader in the IIAC.  But "dominate in every category" is a little strong.  I believe that Wartburg has been picked ( pre-season) to win the conference every year for awhile now.  But here are just a few facts for ya.  In the past 7 years Wartburg has 2 dominant teams, 2005 and 2008. With 2005 by far being their best.  In fact 2002, 2003, and 2004 they only won the league by 1 game.  2006 and 2007 they finished in a 3 way and 2 way tie respectively.  In 2006 it took a Simpson loss to 5th place Loras on the final day of the season to earn Wartburg a tie.  And in 2007 it took a Luther loss to 8th place Coe on the final day of the season to force a tie as well.  They only won the tourney 4 of 7 years, and had quick exits in the regional in all but 2005.  As far as 2009 I think it will be a very competitive league again. Having top pitchers is always a key and Saeugling is a huge loss.   The team with a best top 3 will win this league.

Knights#1

Losing Sauegling is a huge loss.  Keep in mind they have every returning position starter back except their DH ( Sauegling).  As far as my first post goes.... maybe i was being a little arrogant.  Just a big Wartburg baseball fan.  I have unanimous sources who think this 2009 team could be just as good if not better than 2005 team.  2008 Wartburg baseball team didn't have a quick exit from regionals.  If I remember correctly ( not sure if i'm right) they were 1 of 3 teams left losing to Linfield, who went onto world series after beating Augustana twice Saturday, who beat Wartburg by 1 run.  I also agree with IIAC being a weak conference.  But winning 12 conference championships doesn't just happen.  Obviously, you need a little luck and the Wartburg knights have had some of that in the past.  For the teams that have helped Wartburg win it in the past thank you.  But there is a key saying your teams were obviously missing "It's not how you start, it's how you finish."  But you still just don't win 12 conference championships.  It will be a very interesting season to follow.  Also, I agree with the team with the top 3 starting pitchers will win it.  But you can't win it without offense as well obviously.

UPandIN

Sorry Wartburg won 1 game in the regional against Webster 2-0.
