We've officially turned the page on HBD America.

So, thinking of fall football and the new divisions for the MIAC this year. I'm actually kinda excited.

Northwoods Division: Carleton College, Gustavus Adolphus College, Saint John's University, St. Olaf College, and The College of St. Scholastica.
The Skyline Division: Augsburg University, Bethel University, Concordia College, Hamline University, and Macalester College.

It's actually a pretty ingenious way of protecting teams that aren't fully committed to competing nationally, and making sure the top of the conference doesn't end up with diluted SOS numbers (with MAC and CSS additions, and UST moving on).

I also love the way it pumps extra juice into games between Bethel and Concordia, presumably battling for the Skyline, and SJU, GAC, and STO, battling for the Northwoods. Bethel and Concordia have had some awesome games over the years, but for neither side has it risen to the level of SJU or UST in terms of animus. Going forward, I think this creates a great wrinkle to the rivalry. And likewise for the Northwoods teams.

It'll also be interesting to watch the transitions into MIAC play for MAC and CSS. MAC knows the lay of the land, and the hill it has to climb. From what I've heard, CSS football numbers are WAY down. Even with the protected scheduling of the new division format, it might be a really long few years for them.

This is the kind of stuff I like to read. I think CSS but have a decent class coming it to build around. Im looking forward to some good football.

The Northwoods road trips will be a but longer, especially for Northfield schools traveling to Collegeville and Duluth in any given season.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

I'm already looking forward to hating on STO and GAC. They can't even suck enough to suck.  It will be a challenging year.

I have never had anything but love for my friends at St. Thomas.  I haven't said a thing about their head coach in years.

Are there any good sites for recruiting on the D3 level. What schools are signing who and what not?

There's no binding signings in D3.  I'm not aware of any signficant recuiting sites.  I generally see announcements via Twitter.

A tradition unrivaled...

I know theres no signings. I was just wondering. My fav part of the game is the recruiting and following where these kids end up. We can just call it commitments.

I should have been more clear. While SJU and UST have their own animus and good natured hatred of each other, I was referring to how the Cobbers and Royals viewed UST/SJU, as opposed to how they viewed each other.

Maybe not this season but in a season or 2 I think CSS is going to compete. Looking back through their breif history it looks like their Head Coach now knows what he is going.

Give this one a try, not sure how "current" it is, or how accurate, but it's something.

Here's another I suspect is "better", but have to subscribe:

Having seen CSS play a couple of times, I think they'll be fine with the bottom half of MIAC teams.  I think they'll struggle with the bigger, faster teams like SJU and Bethel.  I don't know that they'll ever get over that hump.  It takes a tremendous amount of administrative support to build a program that can consistently make noise on the national scene.  It'd be better for the MIAC if they're able to make strides and compete with the big dogs, so I wish them luck.

We can hope though right. Makes for good conversation.

If you don't have administrative support it certainly would make things tougher but Macalester and St. Scholastica spent more than Bethel on football in 2019.  Recruiting talent seems easy for the great teams and very difficult for the poor teams.  What really makes football recruiting challenging is the 2nd tier guys that would play right away at a Macalester and Carleton are willing to sit for a year or two or never play at St. Thomas.

Plus, when dropping all that cash you want a certain type of product for your hard earned.  Different MIAC schools sell different products and attract different customers.

BDB

I can see why the MIAC wanted CSS as it opened up a whole new part of the state and TV market for coverage.

However I think the Saints should've stayed right where they were at. I can't think of a sport they will compete in the top half of the league soon or for quite some time.
Nordic skiing maybe. And bear hunting. They get bear alerts on campus.  ::)
