Remember too that the Johnnie fight song goes "....something, something for the Cardinal and Blue."
"Make the victory greater
For your dear old Alma Mater
And the Cardinal and Blue!"

In the early-mid 70s, the blue was called "Columbia Blue"... Jim Smith told me he was told the colors were Cardinal Red and Marian Blue when he arrived in 1964.
Athletic Director Bob Alpers is promoting "Johnnie Blue" as the official name!!  Over the years, there have been many variations.  I always thought the track and cross country uniforms were the "true" shade of Johnnie Blue.
Basketball went to blue jerseys in 1977-78.... they have gone back and forth between red and blue for away uniforms.  Johnnie Hockey "retro" blue jerseys are awesome!
I never thought I would see blue football jerseys....did anyone check the turf in the Collegeville cemetery for tremors? ;D
I like them and applause Gary for his courageous decision!!!
I like the blue jersey/white pants combo much better than the all red (jersey/pants) look.
Seems like for the "big games".... the traditional look has been selected.... I expect that will continue....next week, red jerseys, white pants.... and a dominant performance vs. Bethel!!!

Apparently, Gary kept the new look a secret from everyone (even the rest of the coaching staff) until Saturday morning.

I heard some grumbling in the stands, but most people I talked to liked the new look.

I think it's amazing that he kept it a secret!!!
I turned on the web stream as they took the field and pretty much screamed "Oh my god!"

Faunch, I did the same when I walked into the McNeely Spectrum and saw them warming up!

Johnnies up one spot and Bethel up two in the D3 Top 25: https://www.d3football.com/top25/2021/week3

PS. And Gustavus still needing a lot of love to get into the top 25 - but did receive 9 more votes than last week.

A little birdie tells me that a Tommie was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct with just a couple minutes left in the big loss to UNI.  Does anyone have details?

I skimmed the play by play in the stats and didn't see any mention of a personal foul penalty....I'd a player were ejected it would likely have been a personal foul as well.

All five games this week are cross-divisional with the Northwoods Division being the host teams.

I'm going to start this week's comments with the game up in Duluth with St. Scholastica hosting Augsburg. The Auggies are 0 and 2 for the season and are gunning for a win. The Saints only had one non-conference game scheduled in the first week of the season and it was canceled because Sewanee's team came down with COVID. The Saints are in a tight spot, having had no previous games until now. Even having the home field doesn't give them much advantage, if any. I am uncertain which of these teams will get the win, but if I had to give a nod to one of them, it would be to Augsburg, because they have a couple of games under their belts.

The next game is down in Northfield between Macalester at St. Olaf. Both teams are sporting 1 and 1 records. The Scots will have an uphill battle, and might pull off a minor upset, but I'm thinking the Oles will have their way. Welcome back to the MIAC, Scots.

The third game this week is between two teams that are both 2 and 0, Hamline at Carleton, also down in Northfield. The difference between these two teams is how they each played MN Morris in their respective non-conference games these past two weeks. Hamline squeaked out the win by 2 points, while the Knights crushed them by 37. Coincidentally, they both also have beaten Crown this season, Hamline did it by 16 points and Carleton blanked them 51 zip. I'm thinking the Knights beat the Pipers by at least a couple of scores.

The fourth game has Concordia traveling to Gustavus. The Cobbers sit at 1 and 1 after their season opener loss to Valley City State, an NAIA school. The Gusties look good and are receiving votes for the Top 25 in the D3 Poll after knocking off the Wartburg Knights two weeks back. I don't see anything in the way of this Gustie team this season, except the two teams that play in the last game this week.

Which brings us to the game of the week as Bethel travels up to Collegeville to take on the juggernaut that is St. John's. Bethel comes into the game ranked 13th and the Johnnies 6th. Both teams have quality wins against tough opponents, Bethel against UW Platteville, and the Johnnies against Aurora College. This is going to be one heck of a game! I wish I could be there, but have other responsibilities that day. Trying not to sound cliche-ish – but this game could come down to last possession. There will be a lot of people around the country with their eyes on this game, that's for sure. As a BU alum, I sure am pulling for the Royals, and I know there is a lot of respect between these two schools, but only one of them can come out on top. I'll say it again, gonna be a heck of a game!

#40 Jack Mohler. Was a dumb play and the optics look really bad. The guy with the ball was stood up in the pile and it seems Jack came in trying to punch the ball out. That's my most charitable and purple tinted view, but it looked terrible and things were getting chippy at that point also.
Luke Glenna #23 was ejected earlier for roughing the passer and targeting also. If you pull up the ESPN3 footage, curious what you think.

I cancelled my cable sports package and bought a streaming package instead so I lost access to espn3 replays (I have everything broadcast here on ESPN and ESPN2 but lost the online access to ESPN3 which has everything in the ESPN library).  I didn't need those replays until this very moment.  Fate is a son of a gun.

I could feel the Johnnie, Ole, and Carlie schadenfreude all the way in Cedar Falls yesterday but felt really good about most of how we played. A good benchmark early on, good to know where we are and what we are building towards and get our asses kicked right away. Nowhere to go but up.

I've tracked the UNI forum a built and they have been very complimentary of what they saw from UST compared to what they expected. At least when they aren't complaining about all of their QBs and fighting amongst themselves.

He was absolutely just trying to punch the ball out, never swung anywhere near a head.  It just looked a bit awkward, and you might assume it was an angry punch from a different angle.  2:34 on the espn3 replay, if anyone else wants to check it out.

The Glenna targeting play was the right call but didn't look particularly forceful or dangerous as he used up most of his forward momentum to try to jump and knock the pass down first.
