There are also several districts where multiple schools share facilities especially football stadiums.  It is pretty common for 2 or 3 schools to share a stadium, but there are a few districts where 4 schools will share a stadium.  I think at one point in Katy, TX 8 schools shared 1 football stadium.

It is not unusual for certain games to move to local college stadiums.  Playoff games are becoming more normal at the local high school stadiums, but I can remember going to opening round games at Texas Stadium along with other major stadiums.

Another fun tidbit is that for certain HS football games the pay rate is variable.  I believe there is a flat rate, but I know officials receive a percentage of the gate.

The biggest hurdle to playing scholarship FCS football will be actually landing an invite from the MVFC. It's a bit of a catch 22 IMO. Lets say UST becomes the top dog in the PFL and is closing the gap with scholarship FCS programs. That looks like a program that could compete in the Valley ... and that's exactly why the teams that make up the Valley (and recruit MN) wouldn't want to see an ascendant UST in the conference.

That is true. The new market presents an opportunity for them however. This is why Augustana was shunned at the 11th hour. If there is $$ to be made by the conference they will be invited in.

I think the bigger challenge would be the upheaval it would cause to the athletic department. You are talking about a major stadium upgrade, dropping at least 1 more mens sport and adding a womens sport. All that to be Title 9 compliant and meet the FCS stadium standards.
I can't seem to understand all the hand wringing about facility upgrades and money. Look at the names on the buildings and the board of trustees. The money will come. Think joint ventures and "naming rights".

It's certainly doable, but it has its challenges and means prioritizing certain things over others and more importantly, making it work with the limited campus footprint (or off campus facilities, absent just buying and bulldozing more of the residential neighborhood)
Living in the shadow of U$T i have heard so many rumors about expansion and stadium/arena plans and frankly i don't see how any of the work.

Rumor #1: Buy and bull doze St Kate to build a volleyball/basketball/hockey arena. That land would be so freaking expensive and then the tear down cost. Let's not forget the neighbors that will absolutely lose their ****.

Rumor #2: Buy Town and Country Golf course for the same purpose as number 1. The biggest pro in this scenario is that it's adjacent to I-94. Once again the price tag would be steep...also I've never been on the course but it's very hilly...lots of earth to move.

Rumor #3: Literally buy up two to four blocks of homes and level them. Keep in mind that most homes start i the half million to $800k range. Also that's a lot of friggin' homes to buy up....residents are going to want top $$$ and the other neighbors won't be terribly happy.

I know I'm a bitter Johnnie but I don't see anywhere that U$T could build...maybe buy and renovate the coliseum at the state fairgrounds or if Hamline goes under but it and renovate the Hutton Arena?

Is #1 actually a thing outside of my joking day dreams about it?
I think it's just local talk...I've had friends bring it up to me. Remember St Kate's has O'shaugnessy auditorium and a church. Tearing those would not only be bad karma but would piss off the entire neighborhood. St Kate's cut down a bunch of trees a few years back to make room for a parking lot and  people went nuts. Imagine if it were to build a 5,000 seat arena with a bunch of parking lots. Locals also love walking their dogs around pond.

@duffman,

Here's an idea for summer league sport which can keep the wrestlers in shape.

A special regional rankings update podcast which is interesting.  Some interesting (confounding) info dropped to us:

- The first regional ranking in week nine isn't ranked.  Teams that have made it are listed alphabetically.
- This is part of a one year trial to make the selection process even less transparent for some reason.
- The argument for less transparency is that the data isn't rich enough to make the rankings as scientific as the process implies.
- Pat lets the rational cat out of the bag about halfway through when he points out that this change won't change anything anyways.  We already know how region six will be ranked.
- Bracketing is almost certain to stay as it has always been grouped.

(As I listened to this podcast I realised that the MIAC's division schedule not only makes the league more playable for the bottom of the league but increases the RR prospects of the top of the league by having top teams skip two of the lowest teams and avoiding the strength of schedule hit.)

So if Aurora gets ranked, it's a huge plus for SJU, since their name starts with A. Am I doing this correctly?!?  8-)

@Pat,

Thanks for updating the strength of schedule page.  It's much appreciated.  If you were able to add the region for each team that would be a nice addition.  Any chance?

I didn't listen to the Football Weekly show as normal this week (we've just been released from 262 days of home arrest.  I got my hair cut.  Word is that the gov't might allow retail to open next week. Yippee) but when I did there was a tidbit.  So juicy that it seems no one else listened either.

Gary Fasching said that we've likely only got one year left of this division format in the MIAC.  Apparently the coaches have been talking and want to return to a round-robin format.  It's the presidents and ADs that want the divisions.

Not super surprising coming from Gary, at least. For all the updates and modernizing SJU has done with their football program, I think Gary is still a traditionalist in how things should be done. Look back at comments and he didn't seem overly thrilled to be playing in the Allianz Stadium, Target Field venues for instance. The format also eliminates the potential for shared championships (something is better than nothing, right?). Barring something crazy the championship is almost guaranteed to be a rematch, which we have yet to see the ramifications of a split decision / second L has on playoff potential.

Looks like the ASC has 1 non-conference game before their round robin as a 10 team conference. Might help save on travel costs or rushing to find a second opponent (circa SJU in 2019).
