I didn't listen to the Football Weekly show as normal this week (we've just been released from 262 days of home arrest.  I got my hair cut.  Word is that the gov't might allow retail to open next week. Yippee) but when I did there was a tidbit.  So juicy that it seems no one else listened either.

Gary Fasching said that we've likely only got one year left of this division format in the MIAC.  Apparently the coaches have been talking and want to return to a round-robin format.  It's the presidents and ADs that want the divisions.

I'm ok with it....never cared for the idea of a conference championship game. That's something D1 conferences do. And it's way easier to schedule one non conference game. Also a team that manages to be undefeated or win the league outright should be rewarded by a trip to the playoffs instead of having a rematch with a conference foe. That being said if the Jays are able to win out we the MIAC championship will be a chance to play our first stringers an entire game.

@Pat,

Thanks for updating the strength of schedule page.  It's much appreciated.  If you were able to add the region for each team that would be a nice addition.  Any chance?

I will take a look. That seems doable.

Thanks.

Looking at how this file is built, it isn't obvious to me how to pull the region into it but I can go back to the person who built it and see.

Hold on now, the OFFICIAL spread did not make Carleton an underdog.

Conference: 3pts
Concordia @ Carleton (EVEN)

Massey only had the Carls as 2 point dogs.  If this was the first game of the year Concordia might have been favored by 30.

SJU13

Looking at the positives. Defense came to play, and stepped it up in the second half. Outside of the 58yd TD GAC had 28 yds receiving. Under 100 yds rushing. QB probably would been the leading rusher had SJU not helped him to the ground on more than one occasion.

Given the first half, injuries, and momentum breaking penalties offense did have a few critical moments in the second to get us to a safe space. Chris Backes stepped up big in a game that could've easily been about hanging on or managing not to lose. Time will tell but I still expect this offense will put up points.

Though an ugly game it was nice to see SJU get tested. Aurora and Bethel had their moments, but this game seemed to have a grit to it. Some teachable moments that should be beneficial down the road.

Concordia appears to be losing the close game coin flips. Waxed by SJU and a 2 score deficit to GAC. Outside of that it's been 1, 3, and 5 point margin games.

This took 6 off the board for SJU. I think they called on the receiver on the top. How the hell do you call that?

Looks like he wasn't going to the ground until he was tackled in the end zone after already crossing the plane.  So I'm going to go ahead and confirm the call.  I also don't think the OPI was too bad, that was a little more than incidental contact.

How bad do the Cobbers suck this year?!?!

No doubt a down year. They undoubtedly had their best game to date in the close loss to Bethel. It would be easy to point to the new offensive scheme adjustment, but in the several games I have seen, the offense has been quite effective. The defense has been OK, but very inconsistent in the ability to shut down big pass plays.

Credit to Carleton today, they hung tough on their homecoming to the end. They were down by 14 with 10 minutes to go and didn't fold. It was at that point the Cobbers failed to put the nail in the coffin offensively, and Carleton got a big play to get close, and a Hail Mary to tie. Cobbers messed up an extra point in OT and Carleton had the momentum for a big home win.

I suspect Concordia will win out...not that it really matters at this point, but I would have thought that before today's game too.

So, the short answer to your question is, they suck just enough at crucial times to have a disappointing year. They'll be back.
If the human brain were so simple that we could fully understand it...we would be so simple that we couldn't.

The defender initiated the contact more than five yards downfield...there is literally nothing to call other than illegal contact on the defense.

I'm correcting my late night post....the defender is allowed to initiate contact as there is no five yard window in college...this defender had two hands on the receiver...a guy can't make a move or give a little shove to get hands off him. Incidental contact at best.

Also could someone share an opinion on the 10 second run off rule? I'm going to look it up but something really odd occurred at the ends the first half of the SJU / Gus Davis game. A Johnnie defender had an injury with about 20+seconds remaining. Gusties had the ball deep in their territory. Because of the injury the refs enforced the 10 second run off. It made zero sense to me. Imagine if it were the fourth quarter and Gustavus were trailing by 3. Why wouldn't the defense just fake a couple injuries and run the clock out?
