Great game to watch between the 2 top MIAC teams - back and forth the entire game. Stats couldn't have beef much more even. I was a little surprised that SJU was able to run as easily as they did on the Royals, especially the edge rushes. Figured if SJU was going to put up yards it would be pretty much through the air. But Bethel was able to get good pressure on Syverson and sacked him about 5 times. Thought the BU botched snap on the short field goal attempt in the 3rd was going to be the difference but the Royals didn't give SJU a chance to use their magic as they held on to the ball for the last 2 minutes. The 2 late interceptions were huge for Bethel.

Roste really challenges the thesis that one guy can't win you games. In a close game it usually comes down to turnovers, big plays, and field position. Turnovers were even, pass TDs evens, Bethel got the opening series big run TD, and forced us into longer drives (thanks to 2 well downed quick kicks).

Defense had a rough outing. Gonna live or die playing man to man and the missed tackles killed. Offense still feels like it needs to click a bit more with controlling the game. All things considered going 2-1 to start the season given the competition is not a bad outcome. Pick yourself up, learn, and move on.

Top 25 gets another shake up.

At least St. John's won the TOP... Wink-wink

I was at the game and thought it was going to be a long day for the Royals when the Johnnies took around 10 minutes off the clock before scoring on the opening drive - oof.

Another game for the ages going back and forth all afternoon.

Yeah, I agree the pollsters are going to have to rethink many things on the outcome of this game, the one being played down in Texas later today between MHB and HSU, and all the rest of everything, as Corn horn pointed out already.

I am sure everyone will rip me, but poll doesn't matter, only ncaa rankings in November-but having said that, I hope SJU is like 20, maybe that will put a chip on their shoulders and they will come to play from here on out.

Polls are horse****--who gives a damn about what the pollsters think?

I think SJU guy a little complacent after downing UWW and **** the bed today. Hopefully, that wakes them up and they take care of business the rest of the season, or they'll be looking at a loss to GAC and a Thanksgiving at home with their families.

Ice Bear

Ice Bear sends his sincere congratulations to the Royals of Bethel College on their huge W today over the Johnnies. Ice absolutely loved watching this matchup after getting home from the colonoscopy that was the Union/Utica game today. Ice could not be more sincere in his admiration of and enjoyment of the football be played in the MIAC. To be able to watch a rivalry as great as this was a privilege.

Ice Bear says Roste was most certainly the difference in this one. What a player! Ice says lots of season left and wishing both teams success moving forward. Ice hopes both the Royals (his new adopted interest) and SJU win out the rest of the way during the regular season.

Ice also says no one worry tonight if they hear whimpering outside their door. The Union College football team has run away from NY and is rumored to be hiding behind sheds in backyards throughout Minnesota...ugh

Congratulations to Steve Johnson & his Bethel Royals. The better team won today. I'm not going to recap all the shortcomings of SJU today. Monday film will have plenty of opportunities to learn.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Big win for Bethel today, but did you have to kick the hornet nest the week before the Johnnies host the Cobbers?

Come on Ice Bear - it hasn't been Bethel College for several years now - it is Bethel University. ;)

Here's hoping that Roste can stay healthy the rest of the year as the Royals are a completely different team without him.

Well, that was a disappointing day.  Bethel had their chance and they took it.

As #3 said in the car this afternoon, "It wasn't a good weekend for red and white."  Sydney also play in red and white.

Roste was impressive, as were the receivers. Syverson had a bad day. That, I think, was the difference.

I think the secondaries and the confidence each staff had in them was a factor as well. SJU was almost all 3 man front in the first half, and even when they switched to 4 man front for most of the second half they rarely brought pressure or more than 4. Lots of man, but with safety helped rolled over to Kidder and Niewald. I think that probably shows they felt they needed help on the backend, and probably reflected the confidence they had that their D line could get home. Bethel brought more pressure throughout the game and left DB's on islands more often. I think we wanted to be aggressive but also showed high degree of confidence in the secondary to hold up. The most telling stat to me was a Bethel with 5 sacks and SJU with zero.

You could also see as Roste settled in and we got comfortable running him a little, even with the arm vulnerable, that opened things up a lot in the second half. His only real big hi  was on the INT when Woz sought him out for a shot during the return.
