I hope to get advice from the fishermen on this board.
I've always fished Walleye with a spinning rod and reel. My wife bought me a baitcaster rod for Christmas- do any of you use the rig for Walleye? If so, what techniques?

Always been a spinning rod guy since my walleye-driven dad outfitted us with Mitchell Garcia 301s that he kept in Crown Royal bags, but I'm thinking of making the switch to the baitcaster since I mostly now  fish a river with smallmouth, northerns and only the occasional walleye. But I'm with Duff, they'd work nicely with bottom bouncers.

I'm think a baitcaster might help me better work the small river in front of my cabin, which over the last few years has been very low. I started floating a stretch in the canoe, then switched to a kayak and now am gingerly walking the rocky bottom. At my advanced age, it's dicey.

Any word on seniors coming back that have an extra year of eligibility thanks to the COVID year?
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

Just getting home from sandhill crane hunting. Also got several geese. I prefer fly fishing, but definitely venture to the dark side. If given the choice I always choose a spinning rod. I can do everything a casting rod can do and often better. If you are going with a casting rod I will choose a spin cast reel over a bait caster almost every time. I've backlashed too many bait casters over the years which means dealing with equipment issues when I want to fish. Bait casters are good for controlling depth and distance but usually not worth the hassle. If you spun casting don't skimp.

Biggest name for SJU- Alex Larson. Going by memory from the Football Weekly radio show with Gary during the season I believe all the DBs a couple of O and D linemen- quite a few for SJU.
I think JRs this year will be the last class that will get the bonus Covid year
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

That's an operator problem, not an equipment problem.

Ice Bear says he is right with you here. Ice has always been a spinning reel bear. Ice favors his Okuma reels. Ice went down the baitcaster path once and he wasn't a fan to say the least. Ice will say this though in regard to his dislike of the baitcaster, it was not the fault of the baitcaster as it was Ice's impatience getting used to it and his nostalgia for the spinning reel. Ice says the combination was too much and after one season of using the baitcaster, a damn good one,  Ice ****ing handed his to a friend, said "****ing keep it..." and walked away.

It is often an operator error. Many use their thumb instead of setting the drag to the lure. There are a few bait casters with computers that help to correct some issues.  The other advantage spinning has over casting rods is that they better use physics when fighting fish. You can buy acid wrap rods which are cool.

I don't know exactly what you're trying to say.  I've been fishing with baitcasters for 25+ years.  They're not ideal for every presentation, but I prefer them to spinning gear, when it makes sense.

If you're not capable, that's on you.   FWIW, I'm still using several green Shimano Curados from 10+ years ago--no need for computers.

Tuning a baitcaster:
https://adayscatch.com/how-to-tune-a-baitcaster/

My terminology is off, but hopefully this helps. My buddy used his Curado reels for redfish last year. Those are nice.

I prefer fishing off the end of the dock with a bamboo pole and a bobber.   No tuning required.

That is fun.  I bought a couple last summer--the kids and I had a lot of fun.  It's especially thrilling when you hook a bass.

Thanks for all the feedback on the baitcaster. I decided to give it a try so I ordered a Pflueger baitcast reel. I don't think they have much reputation w that style reel but I've had great success w their spinning reels. Since I'm a baitcast novice, I figured I'm not worthy of a big bucks reel yet. I'll throw some lures on the ice this winter and try to get the birdsnest/backlash issues out of the way.

I'll use for bottom bouncing and the times I cast rocky shorelines for a mix of Smallmouth and occasional Walleye. Hopefully next year I won't want to give it to Ice's buddy.

IMO, Pflueger offers great bang for your buck.  I have a few of their spinning reels and have been really happy with them.  I have been wanting to buy a new baitcaster for a few years, but I can't kill the ones I already own.  I don't fish nearly as often as I used to, though.

^^
Hopefully your kids will continue to enjoy their fishing time with you as they grow, leading to some great family trips (not sure if your wife fishes).
One of the greatest blessings in my life is the time I've been able to spend w the kids and wife on fishing trips to MN and Canada.
