Good thing the Strib sent Reusse and his Caruso man crush to document it.

With three-quarters of the non-con games played, the MIAC is setting with a record of 10 and 5. I think 3 of tomorrow's games will tip to the MIAC as well - either of the two games against WIAC opponents might become "a fly in the ointment" in regards to the non-con record this year. Could we sweep tomorrow's games - maybe, hopefully - but it's why we play the games, right?

Prognosis negative, Art. I attended the UW Stout v GAC game expecting down to the wire. It wasn't as close as the 24-7 final. Surprisingly the Gusties looked slow to me and got man handled on both lines.

Nice group of visiting fans.

How about some old school Johnnie Magic to make everyone feel better? Especially since it involves Tommies getting screwed.

The 1994 classic. Johnnies coming off homecoming loss to Hamline. Down to 3rd string QB in Kurt Ramler. Trail 28-13 at half. Take the lead 35-34 when Matt Malmberg has great TD run though he also stepped out of bounds (2:16.21 mark). Then with 3 minutes left Tommies get it inside Johnnies 10. They complete a pass and the tight end breaks the plane for a TD...except refs say he didn't. Pretty clearly did. Oops. On 3rd and goal at the 1 Johnnies stuff them. And then block an 18-yard field goal. This propelled Johnnies on to national semifinals where they lost heartbreaker to Albion. And of course started Ramler on his three-year journey as a Johnnies legend. Whole game is a fun watch but here's the ending.

Also Gagliardi coached it from a wheelchair as he broke his leg when a player had run into him during practice.

That's some impressive video production for 1994 D3 football.

Was that Hamline game a one point loss because the Johnnies went for two? I recall an option to Malmberg being unsuccessful.

John loved running the option in short yardage situations.

MSC did a great job covering some D3 games back in the day. Also for a short while they produced a John Gagliardi show which was of course a fun watch.

Yeah the Hamline loss was 27-26 at home, snapped long home winning streak. Was reading the writeup on it and it was a failed option to Malmberg. Good memory! I was texting with my cousin's husband, who was a standout running back at Hamline, played 93-96 there (Hamline should have beaten Johnnies in '96 too when he had big game). I was going to school at Worthington CC at the time but knew I was going to SJU the next year so my cousin called me, fueled by alcohol, to gloat about the win in 1994. It was definitely a great win for them considering in 1993, also at St. John's, the Johnnies led...62-0 at halftime. That was of course the year they averaged 60 a game. But it was a really weird outlier for the Hamline-SJU series of that era. From mid-80s through '96 Hamline either pulled off the upset or it was a pretty close SJU win (has obviously changed since 1997). But that 1993 game...oof.

Well, . . . the bye week is over. Now the wait for Saturday to get here so we can watch what will undoubtedly be St John's toughest conference test. I wonder how preparations are going? Maybe the blowout loss to Whitewater will end up being beneficial in what it uncovered that needs to be addressed? Was doing yardwork & realized that Ben Bartch & the Jaguars are playing the Chiefs. 3-0 Jaguars with under 2:00 minutes remaining in the first half & the Chiefs driving.

Augsburg, Carleton, Hamline, and Macalaster - what do they have in common? They're the four remaining undefeated teams in the MIAC after all the non-con games were played. Who'da thunk it 4 or 5 weeks ago? So the MIAC ends up 14 and 6 for the season.

Carleton and Hamline play down in Northfield, so one of them is gonna lose a game. Augsburg travels down to St. Peter to take on Gustavus - two teams trending in opposite directions, could be an interesting game. Not sure if the Auggies stay undefeated. And the Scots also travel to Northfield, but to take on the Oles. This is also going to be an interesting game, and I am also not sure if Macalester can stay undefeated. "So, we'll have 1, 2, or 3 undefeated teams left in the MIAC," states Captain Obvious.  ;D

I assume you're thinking long day offensively? Bethel D looks salty. Season is still early so who knows how MIAC teams will shake out.

Penalties costing field position and killing momentum on drives were more disconcerting then execution on either side of the ball. Agreed that the D seems the "stronger" half of the team after two weeks of play. Coach J appears to be building for the long term future of the program, so this year there will be growing pains in the squads as they get used to playing together.

Unfortunately, I'm of the same opinion.  The defense is good, but not great - I think they'll hold up for a bit, but end up on the field way too much, as I really don't think the offense is yet in a place to generate much traction against a team like SJU.

Like you said - they can gain a lot of good experience this year, and have 3 more seasons with Call starting.

I didn't catch any of the game. The box score looks pretty lopsided. The offense can't be that terrible if they put up 429 yards total--or is UWEC's defense that bad?
