The Johnnies were blanked on *OTY awards--I wonder when the last time that happened was?
Especially when we have the top record in the conference. That said, Syverson was the only player on either side of the ball who stood out. If Steve Johnson weren't retiring I might have a problem with Gary not winning COY. He is certainly deserving, having beaten the winner.

Syverson was the team MVP...without him Johnnies would have probably lost to Augsburg and probably Trinity too. Team was a few plays away from having 4 losses.
Next year will be one of the most challenging for Gary and the coaching staff. 18 returning starters and we seemed to take steps backwards. Defense this season was not a strength...the only thing the team did well was throw the ball and the QB is not returning.
For some reason I feel optimistic about next season. 4/5 O line returns, 8 offensive starters, 8 defensive starters all back. SJU has always found a way to somehow replace the "irreplaceable" players. I have loved watch Jackson and Aaron sling it all over the yard, but putting that much on the QB leaves you susceptible to losing when they don't play awesome. Concordia back in 2019 and Gustavus this year were a couple examples. I'm hoping taking a little off of the QB's plate and being forced to run it well will help our consistency on both O and D.

ROR you know I love you like a brother but, you need to take off the red blinders. Johnson did more with less this year and deserves the award. The Johnnies had 6th and in one case 7th year (regular red shirt D2, COVID year, medical red shirt D3) players and they laid an egg. With this much experience and talent the coaching staff, especially Head Coach, needs to find a way to win. Motivate, putting people in positions to succeed, situational football ie:attempting FG on days when offense not crisp instead of getting stopped on 4th and short. Steve Johnson deserved the award in 2023, Gary did not. 2024 will bring new challenges, perhaps Gary can be deserving of the award next year. Go Johnnies!
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

I was a little surprised to see BU go almost exclusively with Kidder & Wildcat on offense, after having it only mixed in from time to time over the prior few games.  Was Bolt banged up, or did they just think they had a better chance to move the ball with the wildcat?  It worked OK at times, but also obviously took their best receiver out as a pass catcher...

I know Bolt was banged up in the Cobber game. No idea on the philosophy. I think it was a little of both. Kidder is our most dynamic player, but it also removed our best WR from the board. IMO this season/team had a lot of untapped potential given our ceiling at QB. Hoping Call makes a step up next year and they can find some guys in the portal or out recruiting. There's a lot of talent coming back. If QB is an asset it will go a long ways to what they can do.

If GAC would have beaten Bethel, would they also have been sent to UWW, and if so, how would they have fared?  Discuss amongst yourselves.

Flat out SJU just needs to get better...defense needs a beast up front and a shut down linebacker and maybe a really good safety and shut down cornerback. Not asking for much!

SJU was tied for the top record in the conference with Bethel, they didn't have it alone. Yeah, SJU beat Bethel but that was early in the year with both Kidder and Farm getting injured the first half, not to mention that Call was the qb, not Bolt, who then took over for the rest of the year. SJU also lost to GAC while Bethel beat them twice. I would have liked to see SJU and Bethel play for the MIAC championship at the end of the year as Bethel was much better at the end of the year versus at the start of the year.  Pretty sure Johnson had less to work with than Gary, and while I might be biased, I think Johnson deserved the award.

Ok, I see that my comments here are no longer welcome and I am not going to participate when I am criticized for every comment I make. I am done with this board - don't need the aggravation. Hasta la vista.

You are most welcome Ice.
As dysfunctional as this group is it's kind of like a very extended extended family- we've got our cousin Eddie's and that's alright that's what make this group work.
Let's all remember 57 on this day and pour one out for him. He was a gem and will be missed. RIP 57.

Was reading Patricia Cornwell's second book, "Body of Evidence" on Saturday & stopped on page 267 for the night. On page 266, it reads, "We passed sleepy storefronts - a barbershop, a stationary store, a bank - then picked up speed as we curved around the campus of Randolph-Macon College with it's Georgian buildings and its frosted athletic field peopled at this early moonlit hour by a row of varicolored football sleds." Quite the timing with the playoffs going & Randolph-Macon still alive! Got a kick out of it!
