Quote from: DuffMan on November 01, 2024, 08:46:53 AMNovember 1st--congratulations to the hearty souls who remain master of their domains!  It was 62 F in our house this morning, and with snow on the ground, I am guessing there is going to be a hard push by the favorite wife to fire it up soon.

Was just about to post - turned it on this morning, so I am out.

Cold weather, paired with a lot of extra door-open time yesterday for trick-or-treaters, had it pretty chilly last night, and to the point of being deemed un-acceptable this morning.

Wanted to (hopefully) provide a bit more clarity on the ol' Bethel top 25 comment. It seemed like SJU has benefitted as much from good consistent play as the chaos of wins and losses by teams around them. If Bethel had still been in the top 25 would they have benefitted similarly? I guess that's the "what if" game I was playing.

Preseason: SJU ranked 14
Week 1: SJU ranked 12 beating Carthage (Alma and Wheaton drop places after losses)
Week 2: SJU ranked 6 beating Wartburg (5 at the time). Wartburg sits 13.
Week 3: SJU (bye week) moves to 5. UWW ranked 3 at the time loses
Week 5: SJU ranked 3. UWLX ranked 3 at the time loses.

SJU wins while going from 14 to 3: Carthage (H), Wartburg (H), Bethel (A), Augsburg (H)

UWW was never ranked with three losses.
UW-L does indeed have three losses but the voters know that one of those is to the No. 6 ranked team in NCAA Division II, by one score.

Edited the comment above. Was not intended to take shots at voters or the outcome, and I'm certainly not looking to have a dust up with Pat.

Just wanted to see other perspectives other than my own for imaginary things. If Bethel was at #25 after the loss, all results staying the same would they likely move up? Conversely, would people say the competition was weak and going 4-0 with a 245-8 points for/against drop them out? Would they stay the same? Idk, maybe? It ultimately doesn't matter.

Would a Wartburg loss in the ARC change how people view SJU? Where would a Concordia loss put SJU? How would a loss impact either team in a potential rematch during championship week?

The only games left in the MIAC that seem to matter, for post season purposes, are BU vs CM, and the MIAC championship. Can't participate in the thermostat discourse as I'm not a homeowner, and guessing how many participate for SJU vs CSS doesn't offer much discussion. I'll stick to lurking.

They'll be limited by how many players they can bring with.  It used to be 55, but I think the MIAC expanded that recently.

Is this the game that St John's finally scores 50+?

Oh! Thanks for clarifying -- I did really think you were saying something different.

SJUJohnnie-we play to the competition-I expect a number of penalties and maybe we get to 49.

If Bethel had hung around within the Top 25 after the SJU loss I'd assume they'd have moved up over the weeks that followed. I think there's always a bit of a subjective mental hurdle to getting in the Top 25 and then moving up. Put another way, probably easier to move up than it is to break in.

Logan's Predictive Ratings show that Bethel is clearly playing at a Top25 level:
1. NCC
2. Cortland
3. Bethel
4. UWP
5. UWL
6. SJU
7. UWRF
8. Mount
9. HSU
10. DePauw

NCC is the outlier in Logan's model. The gap between #2 Cortland and #10 DePauw is 7.9, NCC to Cortland is 14.1.

My takeaway, SJU has played great football all year. Bethel has probably improved more as the season progressed, and had more room for improvement, which you'd expect given new HC and new OC. On track for a great re-match, but both are already in very good shape for making the field, either via Pool A or Pool C (via NPI).

As of this morning at 8am, we are officially out on the Furnace Contest here in Fargo......woke up to 61 with the AC still sent at 68.  Recovering from a moving kidney stone with several late nights in the bathroom, freezing to death...I broke down and turned the heat and fireplace on.  Congratulations to whoever is still fighting without the heat.

I'm feeling some heavy pressure from the natives tonight.  The wife asked how long I plan on making everyone suffer; I said we can hold out till December or till the inside temp hits 55.  ;)

Time of death, 5 pm on Friday night. My daughter came home from CSB and turned on the fireplace while I was outside raking leaves. The house was at 61 degrees. Sigh.

I think Duff might be the last man standing in the "Last Furnace Turn-On Contest."

If any eligible contestant thinks they are still in the running, please raise your hand.

Otherwise, it looks like we have our champion!

Duffman can place his "Golden Thermostat" trophy next to the iron of his previous championships on his yet to be used fireplace mantle.

Congratulations Duffman and family!  8-)
