On a side to the scholarship deal at Drake, 1AA schools may give partial scholarships, but are limited to 85 players receiving any sort of athletic financial aid for footbell.  However, competitive forces mean that a substantial number of players in 1AA programs are on full scholarships.  Notably, the Ivy League, a Division 1AA conference, does not offer athletic scholarships at all, and a football-only 1aAA conference, like in the Drake situation, also does not offer scholarships.  The Metro Atlantic is another league that sponsors D1AA non-scholarship football.  For now, the Pioneer League, MAAC, and NEC will continue to be classified, at  least for now, as D1AA "mid-major football conferences.

KR, Dutch fan is right, I dont know if you spend every weekend up in the cities or Johnnieville, but if you dont, Central and Simpson are very good football programs, and on the ninth, Central is at the Tommies, and Bethel is right here in town against Simpson.  Now these are the two teams you hate the most, I know one sucks and one swallows, if your not watching Johnnie/RIver Falls on the 9th, you could probably catch some skrums and sack blows in Indianola.  You would at least get a look at Bethel so that you can get the scoop on them for the last game of the season.  You should know when the Tommies and Royals play, they will not allow you to bring any form of liquid into the stadium. They dont care about booze, they just wont let YOU bring any form of liquid into the stadium.

My first rotation is from 9/4-9/15, so I won't be able to make it to that game, however I will be in and around Des Moines from then on. I actually have a family practice rotation in Indianola from October 30th until Christmas break, so if I haven't made it to a Simpson game by then, I'll try to make the Simpson-Loras game November 4th. I'd also like to make it to a Central game if I get a chance, but I guess time will tell how many weekends I have free.

As much as I dislike the Tommies and Royals, I'd rather us play them every year than not. It's one of the things in life aside from Mrs KR, Hamm's, and this website that keep me going! 2 of my favorite games of all time were the 2003 games against Bethel (409) and the week before at UST. I'd rather see a close game like those than a blowout against a weak UMAC team anyday!

I e-mailed my UNI buddy and told him about the potential for tickets, I'm sure he'd be thrilled! With the exception of work Wednesday afternoon, I have nothing going all week, so if you'd prefer and your wife doesn't want the tickets, I could come pick them up as well.
Now accepting new patients. All bills must be paid in scotch shortly after any services rendered.  Sorry TDT, no problems below the waist.

Well, after a multiple month hiatus, I'm back - now I know most of you won't care, but I'm sure Mighty Royal will give me a shout out.

I was videotaping for Hopkins High School today at a scrimmage at Anoka High School (Brainerd and Cretin -Derham also participated.)  Cretin's offense is amazing.  Each team got 20 minutes on offense and 20 on defense against each team.  Cretin scored about 6 touchdowns on Hopkins in about 20 plays (I realize Hopkins isn't very strong).  Many of which came from 30-40 yards out.  I think Cretin scored about 15-20 touchdowns for the day!  They are a passing machine.  They must being doing a darn good job recruiting lately!

I keep losing my posts, twice when i've went to click post, i've lost my login status, or something.
So, I am sorry if this post will be too simple to respond to your efforts, kilted.

The NCCAA has good dII and naia teams in it.  the naia has some great schools in it that northwestern has played.

NCAA division 3 is where the UMAC belongs.  As a non-scholarship conference it was difficult to compete in the playoffs and national tournaments against scholarship schools.  It is very evident that a lot of the naia schools who are leaving the naia felt similarly and are really looking forward to the kind of recognition that the ncaa receives.

I think the UMAC switching to D3 will provide for some exciting matchups in the future in all sports.  This is allready true in some sports.

Football may be the last to even up.  I believe the upper tier of the UMAC can compete with the middle of the MIAC.  The head-to-head matchups between those teams are just not there due to the limited schedules of all teams in large conferences in d3.  Just because Northwestern gets crushed by St. John's doesn't mean they couldn't compete with the other teams who also get regular beatings from the johnnies.

Don't let me get you so discouraged, so early into the season.  The john john's haven't even had the opportunity to cough up the ball 8 times in a game as with whitewater in '05 and olaf in '04.

did anyone see the  byrnes (SC.) and Glades (FL.) high school game on espn today?  Those kids are so athletic, it makes me wonder if the minnesota powers (cretin, wayzata, eden prairie) could compete.

"Drake has played DIII teams, but not for a while.  The have a pretty cool heritage. "

Actually, it hasn't been all that long, the heritage includes loses to WIAC nobody Platteville in 2003 and 2004.  In '04, Drake was 10-2 and lost to Platteville, which was sub-.500 in the conference that year.

How did Brainerd look, I know they graduated almost their entire Offense.

Wasn't there a period (perhaps about 3 or 4 years) in the 80s when Drake itself was a DIII school?

Brainerd was easily the weakest of the 4 teams.  They still made some plays but were  undersized compared to the other 3 schools.  They did however play very hard and I can see why SJU likes to get playes like Mike Zahauer from the Brainerd area.
Cretin's defense wasn't that strong and they'll need to outscore the better teams they play.

The NCAA is doing away with I-AA & I-A after this season. There will be 2 subdivisions of D-I....the CS (Championship Subdivision) and the BS (bowl subdivision)...if anyone cares, there's plenty more info here http://i-aa.org/article.asp?articleid=79814

My 2 cents worth-- AO, NWern can play with the bottom tier team in the MIC, and might on rare occasion pull off and upset. They'll never be able to play competitively with the middle of the pack teams, much less the top dogs.  Winning the NCCAA is big whoops, kinda like winning 9 Man state football title--- NO ONE CARES. Wnjoy those rare wins over the bottom tier and save your yapping for NW vs Rockford or Martin Luther.  :)

Faunch-- a couple of years back Cretin played a team from Louisiana (I think) in a similar ESPN-covered game....they got beat handily, but in the Raiders defense, it was a down year at CDH, right after Mauer graduated.

Speaking of Mauer--- how bout them Twins last night? KR-- I will be off slightly in my prediction... I had said we'd be in WC lead by 1 ½  games tomorrow night-- looks more like it will be ½, but 2 ½ would be SWEET
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Who do you consider the middle of the pack teams?  Can't yap at martin luther because I don't see any martin luther supporters around here and nwc beat em 35-6 last year.  Here's hoping for more balance within the MIAC and the UMAC, the WIAC definitely has a good thing going.

Semantics. The I-AA football schools don't like being called I-AA in non-football sports so they pushed for a change. It doesn't change reality.
