The missed facemask was terrible.  I would complain about the holding, but it is not easy to make a good argument with it.  Holding in the interior is not an easy call to make.  The late hit by an Ole on the QB was terrible.  I would hope Meidt would call that kid out at some point.  There might have been some holding on the play that should have been called (jersey stretching), but you do not take out the QB next to their bench.  I would like to hear the reasoning behind the pass interference at the end of the game by Olaf.  If the SJU receiver could have caught it then it would have been an amazing catch.  It was clearly uncatchable.  I did not see what got the flag, but with where the player and the ball were in respect to each other I would have thought a hold call would have been better served.  My thought on committing the intentional pass interference is that it is only 15 yards which beats the 30+ SJU was getting on those long passes.  It also makes the receivers think about the pass interference which plays some mind games.  It is not the best play in football, but it does keep the pain down some.  Olaf #6 had a rough game.  You could see the frustration as he kicked a punt down the field after it was downed.  He will come back though.  After games like this he comes back stronger than ever.  I was also not at the SJU tailgate party.  I had other things going on, but I did appreciate the invitation.  Hopefully we will get another shot at you in the playoffs.  We have to beat Concordia and Augsburg convincingly.

Olefan,

Was the facemask any worse than Gearman getting "tackled" in the 1st quarter? I wasn't at the game so all I have to go on was the SJU commentators.

Agreed on Meidt needing to call the kid out.

On the pass interference/holding call... I believe the radio guys called it defensive holding... any ball is uncatchable if you're being pulled back, hard to judge how fast a receiver would have been/ if the ball was catchable when he is giving piggyback rides to DB's as it sounded like.

Best of luck against Concordia! You will need the best game of your season on both sides of the ball to make it competitive. No hate, just being honest with you. I believe Concordia has as good of a running game if not better than SJU and Olaf couldn't stop SJU's ground game with 9 in the box. Also, your offense needs to come up with at least 3 huge plays (huge meaning >50 yards or long TD's) to stay in IMHO.

All Monkeystomps in the MIAC--

SJU-63-STO-9, Bethel beat Carleton 41-0, Concordia beat Augsburg 48-14, St. Thomas beat Gustavus 35-14; and Hamline beat Macalester 54-0 in a nonconference game.
;D

This old Johnnie thinks that, based onTRUs analysis, in the annals of MONKEY BUSINESS it should be recorded as a MONKEY SWEEP and should be classified as such in the definitions.

From my side of the field that "facemask" call looked clean. I realize the Ole fans saw the back of the play and thinking back Ican see why it looked like a facemask, however, the tackler reached across the body of the runner and grabbed the shoulder pad and brought him down.  Looked legal to me.... my $.02

UW-Whitewater only had a 2pt lead in the polls for the #2 ranking. Does anyone believe SJU could move up a spot after yesterday's big win, given SJU's success against the WIAC in the playoffs and the fact that the WIAC appears to be way down this year. I believe SJU has a strong case. I (and my bias) strongly disagreed with the leap frogging of SJU last week.

I think the WIAC being down this year would be a tough sell, especially looking at their non-conference game records.

UWW is 3-0
UWEC 1-1 losing to SJU and not counting a loss to a very good NAIA team in St. Francis
UWOsh is 3-0
UW Stout is 3-0
LAX is 1-0 not including a loss to D II South Dakota State
RF is 1-0 with non DIII losses to Bemidji State and Concordia St. Paul, not that it means much, but they beat PLU by a larger margin than Linfield did
Stevens POint is 1-2 with loses to Linfield and Hardin Simmons (#1 and #10 in the nation respectively)
Platteville is 1-1 plus a loss to D II Drake

Hard to say a conference is down when their combined non-conference D III record is 14- 4 with losses to Linfield (#1), SJU (#3), Hardin Simmons (#10), and Augustana (#19).

But I agree SJU could and will whip any of them come playoffs!

KR, thanks for the homework. The WIAC non-conference record is better than I thought it was. Do you know if UWW has any kind of recent playoff history? Maybe I thought the conference was down a little, because its usually LAX, EC, or SP leading the way.

Does anyone remember the score of the 2003 national championship with Mt. Union???

MIACWatch,

24-6.

The following teams played SJU closer that year:

UWEC
Concordia
St. Thomas
Bethel
Linfield

Bread,

Whitewater hasn't finished better than 7-3 since at least 1999.  That's as far back as D3.com has and the school's website doesn't go any further.

As sad as it may be, I have watched it enough... and remember being there well enough... that I can tell you what play is coming when with about 75% accuracy as well as say who for SJU made the tackle on defensive plays.

Watch Theis' TD run in slow motion, you can almost see the MUC(k) defender leaning back in anticipation of the hit...then BOOOM!

KR-
My copy is now worn out in that spot.....it skips everytime I try to play it.  Everytime that I see that game I remember how it felt to see Theis bulldoze that kid.  That was when I knew for sure we would win that one.
I didn't do it....yet.

For a twist on the 1-2-3 of the West Region, it is possibble that White Water gets a #1 seed in the "North" region with Mount Union being a #2 if White Water remains unbeaten throught the regular season. Things that make you go hmmmmmmm??
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

The St. Olaf defense had more psychological harm done to it than good by being forced to stay on the field with the SJU offensive reserves. The reserves from SJU scored twice on the STO 1st team defense. The STO 1st team defense was on the field with the SJU 4th team offense, which could have possibly scored had time not run out.
In my opinion the Concordia game has already been decided before the opening kick off. The only detail that needs to be worked out now is the final score.
