Hmm, this brings up another good point. (Monkey Stomp)2 = Monkey2 2MonkeyStomp Stomp2 assumes that (Monkey Stomp) = (Monkey + Stomp). However, we can't assume a plus sign, so (Monkey Stomp)2 would really be Monkey2Stomp2. Nice work, j_esq.

You also can't assume those parenthesis around Monkey Stomp.  You know what happens when you assume, don't you?  There, I'm done.

I just don't get it. The hatred. I'm a Tommie and I dearly love several Johnnies and Bennies like they were my own kids. I guess I'm just above it ;D

MyYak, I think it simply shows how much more mature you are versus the rest of us.   8)

Sorry about the soccer outcome at Concordia.   :'(

TRU--
Since I had the pleasure of meeting many of the posters at the game last year, I recall that most of them seemed young to me, but since I am almost 49 I guess that would make sense.  The "older guys" I met seemed a bit more laid back and not as much into the pre-game drinking thing, a bit more into just the general socializing, which is a bit more to my liking.  The younger guys like to party, as they should.
I guess I just don't hold onto my allegiance to UST like you sju grads do.  Doesn't mean one is better or worse, just different.  I would assume most of you have a strong opinion on that matter, which you are entitled to.

Like with many teams in sports that have such a fanatic following i.e ND in cfb, Yanks in bb, Packers in nfl, etc. I have always wondered if the same following would exist for sju fb if they didn't have the success they have had, but we will honestly never know since they have been so good for so long.  A very hypotheical question would be "Would you all be so passionate about your team if they were consistently .500?"  And maybe in that questions is the reason the sju posters dominate this board since your team is always at or near the top, so it is easier to "voice your opinion" about them.  After all, how many Carleton, Hamline, Augsburg  (until recently St Olaf) and for that matter UST posters even care to offer their thoughts about their games against the johns when most know they are likely to get thrashed.  As evidence, why does one of the sju faithful have to ask "...where are the UST posters?"

We ask because of the rivalry.  What good is a rivalry if you can't exchange jabs at one another?  I'm sure there will be "colorful" shirts worn by students on both sides at the game on the 12th.  There will be numerous chants about whose school is better.  But no one (aside from you, knights) speaks up on the board.  I would think that there are some students at UST that are passionate about their FB team.  Rivalries just aren't fun with out the passion.

Knights---

Many of us have such a strong allegiance to the program because it was the best 4 years we spent playing/watching football in our lives.

Success breeds loyalty, you are correct.  However, your hypothetical about how strong SJU's backing if they were a .500 team, look back to the 97 season, when the Jays were 6-4.  If you look at the average attendance, no change!!!

The main reason why SJU has such a strong, dedicated following is simply in the fact that no matter where in the world, or what year you graduated, you are considered part of the Johnnie Family.  I'm just very fortunate to have played on wildly successful teams for a coach I respect almost as much as my father, and met some of my strongest life friends along the way.

They fact that I am 31 and have my picture posted on the internet "shotgunning" a beer does not put me "below" you, or make me less mature....  It means that I have a group of people who share a common bond, and like to enjoy ourselves, all-be-it reliving glory days, and not worrying about anything...

It's not hatred, it's called BANTER.....All in good nature, t-shirts ripping each other......

Knights,

To answer your question, no I would not be so passionate if SJU were not so succesful.  However, I do think I would be more passionate than what I see from the other schools in the MIAC.

Johnnies tend to be very proud of our school, in many ways.  Football seems to be kind of a uniting factor across the age differences.  As KR stated, I am almost 80.  He's only 14 (think Doogie Houser  8) ) and there are a lot of things we don't have in common due to that age difference.  But at the tailgate and games and on this board age differences tend to disappear.

Regarding my comment about lack of Tommie posters, I wish their were more.  I think the fact that we at SJU blather on so much about the Tommies is a level of respect we have for them.  We just have a funny way of showing it.

We want other schools to have better teams and more posters on this board.  I know I get tired of reading only Johnnies posting.  I am sure the other Johnnies get tired of reading my posts.  It is much more exciting to have competition.  The week before the St. Olaf game, with all the anticipation of a real battle, was fun.  And the tailgating was more fun because the interest brought more people out.

Now, about the game.  What always scares me about a St. Thomas game is that they do have talent.  You never know when they are going to show it.

ROR,

Thanks, they were a very good team.

P.S. Don't ever call me mature.

By the way, you Johnnies (can't say that)

Well , your mothers (can't say that either)

Your sisters and brothers (forget that too) ... Jeez

You have great fathers  ;D

Well I can say - How many people gave the Johhnies a chance against Mount Union in 2003? Don't ever underestimate an opponent.

I personally have not noticed any reason why tazers would be needed by life safety officers.  Another major problem people have with this is the on campus EMTs are having difficulty getting needed funding-they are part of Life Safety's budget.  Life Safety did not request any additional funding for the EMTs but asked for tazers instead.  I personally feel it is more beneficial for the University to have a funded EMT squad than Life Safety officers with tazers.  Here is part of an email sent out by the SJU senate.

Did you know...
...At SJU graduation in May, EMTs (part of Life Safety's budget) couldn't accommodate visitors who needed wheelchairs, so they had to borrow wheelchairs from the Monastery while some monks sat in bed all day with no means of mobility?

Life Safety, why would you buy weapons when we need wheelchairs???

here is another part from a different e-mail

Whereas, Life Safety Services, in its budget request, has neglected the needs of the St. John's EMT Squad, and has requested the purchase of advanced non-lethal weaponry,

Whereas, the St. John's EMT Squad provides an invaluable service to the St. John's community,

Whereas, the St. John's EMT Squad needs a collapsible stretcher, stair chair, radio pagers, duty parkas, vacuum splints, and anatomical models to ensure the health and safety of members of the community,

Whereas, the St. John's Senate By-laws preclude the Senate from funding such non-programmatic institutional needs,

Whereas, the St. John's Senate has called for institutional funding of the St. John's EMT Squad,

Whereas, this is the first budgetary period in which the University has sole funding responsibility for such needs,

Whereas, St. John's University prides itself on strength of community,

Whereas, past and current efforts by the Department of Campus Life have improved student to Life Safety Officer relations,

Whereas, the purchase, presence, and use of tasers by Life Safety Services would severely degrade community atmosphere, and strain student to officer relations,

Whereas, the St. John's Senate commits to encouraging community, officer, and student safety through enhanced campus dialogue,

Be it resolved, that the St. John's Senate categorically condemns the acquisition of tasers for Life Safety Services,

Be it resolved, that the St. John's Senate strongly recommends the University fully fund all EMT capital requests for fiscal year 2006, and future EMT training under the proposed Campus Life Fee.

This motion was passed unanimously by the St. John's Senate including the following members:

Willy Wonka

knights - I follow you agree, to a point. Having attended the SJU/Eau Claire game last season, it was a joke. The Johnnies got behind big and I would guess about a third of the crowd - if not more - was gone by the time the fourth quarter (and fun) started. The old man I happened to be sitting next to complained about Gags all game, wanting him to retire. It was pretty funny to watch and listen to.

Having said that, success naturally breeds interest. The GAC basketball team has been to the national tourney each of the last 5 years and the student section has tons of bandwagon jumpers. I can only imagine how many who don't know a thing about football do the same thing at SJU. The UST fanbase for football is pathetic though. Even when they were good (with Barkley et al) the stands were never even close to filled.

As for posters of teams who are routinely at or below .500...what do you think Frank, Mongo and myself are? :)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

OAS- You are correct on your positives and negatives re: SJU. Add to the positives the fleet receivers. But most importantly and often overlooked (since offense sells tickets and defense wins games) is the D this year. This is a well-coached veteran group. Even with Steffensmeier out and Good banged up, it should be hard to move the ball against SJU this year. That's a big positive.
And I'm not just saying this to try to suck up karma points!

ROR-
I beat you by almost a month :D

Oh, not the Dumo call though :o
Good call!
