raider, we are all responsible for our own actions, but then you knew that.  ;)

If MR wants to delete his active status, that's his deal, not yours.

Good luck to your squad at the Stagg. Looking forward to hosting you again at "The Big Willy."  :D

BDB - I hesitated to give props to BDB jr because if he does well, he might get to like playing goalie, and there's really no excuse for that. Having hard rubber flung at you from all angles is not something I would wish on anyone.
I get your drift retagent. He's not into the hard rubber puck stopping thing other than with his stick and move it forward.
But we have to have someone in goal, right bennie?  ???

I'd rank wrestling third, for sure.  The Gophers are so darn good, though, so that helps to draw people in.  Wrestling, in my high school at least, was about as popular as syphilis.  I think other than family and good friends, no one ever came to watch us.  Of course, our team sucked and that didn't help.
This depends on where you are talking. Iron Range, Twin Cities, rural Southwest. My H.S.- Dassel-Cokato has had some success in the past & wrestling (when they have a good team) will out draw boys B.B.
My current home of Maple Lake has a strong family connection of wrestling- there was a stretch of 10 years where there was a Wurm on the team, most making it to state. St. Michael-Albertville will the Hackenmueller boys, the Dehmer's and the Euell's and of course the long tradition at Paynesville.
Of course hockey is king on the Iron Range (except Chisholm) and the Twin Cities have a population  base where you can have success in all 3 sports at any one time (Bloomington Kennedy in the early 1990's) other examples I'm sure I am missing.

Why can the Gophers wrestling & hockey teams recruit in the state , yet football & basketball blue-chippers leave the state? Winning tradition :o
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

So since you wrestled there...

RE Wrestlin' in MN

I was a slightly above average wrestler in Ohio before coming to SJU. I never went to state or even got real close, but I had a winning record for my high school career. I figured I'd be about the same level wrestling at a D3 school.

Then came the first practice where I was paired up with 2 Apple Valley guys who literally ran me ragged and left me for dead.

Then came my first Collegiate varsity experience: a thrilling 14-3 loss.

My favorite wrestling experience of my sophmore year was during the MIAC duals at Auggie. Our varsity wrestler at my weight (174) had an injured thumb and we had already locked up the loss to Augsburg by the time my weight was coming up, so coach Elts (John Elton) had both of us warm up. He decided to save his battle-worn senior and sent me out to be the sacrificial lamb so to speak.

Here is the exact word for word announcement from the PA announcer:
QuoteNow wrestling for St John's, Dustin Schuett, a freshman from Mansfield, Ohio with a record of 0-6.

And for Augsburg, 2 time defending D3 National Champion with a current 56 match winning streak and 14 consecutive pin streak, Senior Nick Slack!

At this point I soiled my singlet and turned to Elts for some motivation or an excuse to leave.
He gives me the old wink and the thumb's up and says "All right, be agressive, work your moves."

Right, work my moves... that's like telling a 4'11 bull-fighter to grab the bull by the balls.

I ended up lasting 3minutes and was his longest match of the dual, although I am pretty sure the only reason it lasted that long was because he was toying with me.  :-\

In my freshman year, I ended up wrestling that years 174lb champ (Nick Ackerman... that's right, I got beat by a guy with no legs), the runner-up (Slack), the #4, #6, #7, and #9 guys... made for a real fun season, aided by the 2 concussions...

Then came my sophmore year when I actually won a match. Following the season I retired from wrestling to preserve my nearly imperfect 1-19 career record. That's right, I ended up with twice as many concussions as victories and 3 times as many cases of ringworm. Needless to say, there isn't a plaque with my name on it in the SJU wrestling room.

PS. Ackerman was one of the coolest nicest and most humble guys I have ever had the pleasure of losing to. Total class act and I couldn't have been happier when he beat Slack.
Now accepting new patients. All bills must be paid in scotch shortly after any services rendered.  Sorry TDT, no problems below the waist.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

BDB

Nothing better than toasting to another title in '06. We will do our best to garner some revenge for UWS and soften UWW up for you next year.

Congratulations on your son's hockey success. Maybe we can catch a game after the holidays.

Have a great weekend.

WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

I get alot of gifts from vendors and suppliers this time of year.

Just took in my 3rd meat/cheese basket.  :P

BDB is going to have to go on the Atkins diet to get rid of all this stuff.

Hey, how about somebody giving me some Wild tickets like last year.  ;)

Johnnie Red

KR, Nick Slack's dad, Kevin, wrestled for our adult team at NYA in the early `80's when we beat Albert Lea for the state championship. That was a match.

The LAX men's squad is projected top 4 in the WIAC I believe.

As KR would say, is that like being the tallest midget in the circus?

tmerton- don't forget the ever popular curling for a winter sport, though not a HS sport, I believe. Sometime when you're in Minnesota, we should organize a little Stiftungsfestivities bonspiel (now YOU go look up a word!) The St. Paul club let us do that some years ago and it's quite the experience. Of course, they do serve adult beverages at the rink. ;D

And rasslin? Nothing fills a gym like a Foley vs Milaca wrestling match.
