Happy Birthday Duffman! +K

And here's some nautical humor...

A young woman in New York was so depressed that she decided to end her life by throwing herself into the river. She went to the Verazzano Bridge and was about to leap into the frigid water when a handsome young sailor saw her tottering on the rail, crying. He took pity on her and said, "Look, you have so much to live for. I'm off to Europe in the morning, and if you like, I can stow you away on my ship.

I'll take good care of you and bring you food every day."  Moving closer, he slipped his arm around her shoulder and added, "I'll keep you happy, and you'll keep me happy." The girl nodded yes. After all, what did she have to lose? Perhaps a fresh start in Europe would give her life new meaning.

That night, the sailor brought her aboard and hid her in a lifeboat. From then on, every night he brought her three sandwiches and a piece of fruit, and they made passionate love until dawn.

Three weeks later, during a routine inspection, she was discovered by the captain. "What are you doing here?" the captain asked. "I have an arrangement with one of the sailors," she explained. "I get food and a trip to Europe, and he's screwing me." "He certainly is," the captain said. "This is the Staten Island Ferry."

The rest of the story...

Now here is an interesting story about a common item of interest.  I had never heard this incredible story about the Goldberg brothers and the automobile air conditioner. The year was 1946...

The three Goldberg brothers, Norman, Hyman, and Max from Gary, Indiana designed and developed the first automobile air-conditioner in early 1946.

On July 17th, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97. The three brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that three gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter.

Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car which was about 10 5 degrees inside - turned on the air-conditioner and cooled the car off immediately.

The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them 3 million dollars for the patent. The brothers refused saying they would settle for 2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label "The Goldberg Air-Conditioner" on the dashboard of each car that it was installed in.

Now old man Ford was more than just a little bit anti-semitic, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg's name on 2 million Ford cars.

They haggled back and forth for about 2 hours and finally agreed on 4 million dollars and that just their first names would be shown on the dashboard.

And so, even today, all Ford air-conditioners show on the controls, the names of the three Goldberg brothers......"Norm, Hi, and Max."

And now you know the rest of the story!

Duffman, belated happy birthday!

What are everyone's thoughts on trying to get Sanjaya Malakar of American Idol to show up for a Stiftungsfestivities this fall? Imagine what the tailgate party would be like with him and Paris Hilton in attendance. I know TDT would be in "Seventh Heaven!" :D

I will join Johnnie Red with the belated Happy Birthday!! 26...such a young pup! ;D

Burger history lesson for the day:

1861 - The first Stiftungsfest celebration.

1921 - Using small beef patties that could be cooked quickly and sell for a nickle apiece, White Castle reinvents the hamburger as a "fast" food.

1952 - Backyard burger cooking fires up with the introduction of the Weber kettle grill.

1954 - First Burger King opens in Miami.

1955 - In Des Plaines, Ill., businessman Ray Krock opens a restaurant with a name acquired from the California-based McDonald Brothers hamburger stand.

1972 - Wendy's modern drive-thru window sets the standard for all national chains.

2000 - Heinz markets green-colored ketchup as a condiment - to a nonreceptive public.

2001 - the first ever Stiftungsfestivities in Collegeville when the Johnnies host the Royals.

Speaking of McDonald's, any of you older posters out there remember the days when THE event for your birthday was to take your friends to McDonald's for the party?

I can well remember when the first McDonald's opened where I grew up but we didn't go out much to celebrate birthdays.  McDonald's would have been a big ticket item. :D

Chuck E. Cheese was the birthday party place of choice for my kids. I remember once they had to clear all the kids out of the big jumping pit full of plastic balls. Seems one child was so excited that he had an "accident". Fun job for the high school kids who had to clean out the pit and sanitize the pit and the balls. Think how many "accidents" went unreported.  :o :P
