The White Silly

Scoutteamtommie, just would like to get your thoughts on the Auggie/Tommie game this year....my thoughts are that my auggies arena league offensive will probably get the job done pretty dominantly...i don't know if our D is gonna be good...but our O will be DANGEROUS as always...what do my other fellow Auggies think?

To be honest, I think the St. Thomas defense will handle the passing attack of the Auggies without too much trouble.  Our three current starters at DB and FS all played/started last year and did well.  At linebacker, we have three freshman and a captain who all started last year and should do very well.  My one concern is whether or not we have the ability to pressure the quarterback...no matter how good our secondary is, given enought time anyone can get open.  We graduated three starters on the defensive line who were the strong point of our defense last year, so I think our defensive success this year will hinge on whether or not we can get three guys to step up and fill their positions.  Offensively, I think people are going to be suprised at what we can do.  We have a junior quarterback in Sauer who has had two years of playing time to mature, and a solid receiving core that includes Theisen.  At this point, I think Augsburg is too young to legitimately challenge for a W.

"Bud Light Salutes the Blue and Gold

Announcer: Today we salute you, Mr. Delusional, Irrational Notre Dame
football Fan....

Announcer: Season after season, year after year, you try to justify
your absurdly high pre-season ranking.
Backup singer: Why aren't we number one??

Announcer: You scramble to make futile attempts at damage control when
the Irish lose to yet another grossly inferior opponent.
Backup singer: Charlie's headset was broken!

Announcer: Inevitably, you'll bring up the past, and boast of
championships won 20 years before you were born.
Backup singer: We wore leather helmets!!

Announcer: You will point out that you have more heisman winners than
any other program, as though that is relevant to the current season.
Backup singer: Been playing since the 1880ssssss!

Announcer: Go on, ignore that home loss to Boston College in the
regular season for the 6th consecutive time in a row...
Backup singer: BC has better Christians!!

Announcer: And continue to believe that you'll actually win a bowl game
some time this century.
Backup singer: We're O for the 2000's!!!

Announcer: So crack open an ice cold Bud Light, oh Emperor of Excuses,
and take comfort knowing that when you don't finish in the top 25, you'll
be back to number three when the pre-season polls come out next year.
Backup singer: Mr. Delusional, Irrational and Hopelessly Pathetic Irish
Fannnnnnn!"

I make a point of not raising ND on this board but since Fins and Sum think there are a few laughs here I might as well set the record straight a little.

* ND isn't rated in the top 25; SI rates them somewhere down in the 40s, behind 7 of this year's opponents.  I haven't heard any ND fans complaining, but hey, maybe ND fans go to the LLPP to whine.
* There is no 6 game losing streak to BC; nor 5.  Any loss to Backup College is embarrassing but someone might want to get his facts straight.
* Losses to "grossly inferior opponents" are called upsets - like USC's loss last year to Oregon State (or to Fresno State a few years ago in the, what, Raisin Bowl?).  I don't think ND has had any more such losses than anyone else but I'm open to someone with a lot of facts showing otherwise.
* I'm not sure why someone would apologize for the history, heismans and championships.  While the last championship was 1988, SJU's last championship before winning in 03 was in 1976.  I suspect no one was telling the Johnnies in 2002 that they had no right to be proud of their history.

But if you like the above Bud Light Salute, this season might give you even more laughs.  ND might lose to all seven of the opponents rated above them (including BC :o ), and maybe even lose to yet another "grossly inferior opponent."  Maybe.  Maybe not.

Can we go back to D3 football now?

Hey, don't shoot the messenger! I just re-printed a joke. :D

Man you ND fans are touchy. Didn't Notre Dame (the saint, not the school) teach you anything about humility? ;)

Dont know if anyone has seen this/posted this, but a 69 year old is going to play D3.  He looks pretty badass.

So Mongo comes out of hiding with his sexually charged post with a link that I put up a couple hours ago.  Have you decided if you're going to join me on Sept. 1st?

Does ROR have any eligibility left?

Frank,

I never had any eligibility.  Lack of any discernible athletic ability made me ineligible.

Daily Dose reaction:

http://www.d3football.com/dailydose/2007/08/22/59-year-olds-story-is-typical-media/

I am all for the underdog, but...

There is a part of me that hates seeing articles like this. Working at a D1 school, I regularly have to deal with D1 athletic snobs. The assumption is that if the players on any of our beloved D3 teams had any "real" talent, they would be playing for a D1 school. Sadly enough, having a 59 year old on the football team just lends credence to their argument. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have had to argue that D3 football is not the 13th grade! Pointing out that our players actually meet the college/university admissions requirements only gets me so far. Yes, I throw out the STUDENT athlete bit, but they aren't questioning grades, they are questioning (and mocking) talent. I agree with Pat that when these kinds of D3 stories are the only ones that the major sports news sites pick up, they make D3 sports seem like a side show and take away from how competitive it actually is.

It is kind of funny that one of my friends that is new to watching hockey called me to find out why the Canucks took so long to get Trevor Linden under contract for the up coming season and my answer boils down to that at his age, he is not the player he once was and this close to retirement, he isn't going to go play anywhere else. He is 37.

Been absent from posting for quite a spell. Checked in occasionally. Just checked out the new johnniesfootball.com. GREAT JOB guys!!!! Now that the season is close at hand, the itch that started in mid-July, of that smell of Johnnie Football in the air can finally be scratched. My twin daughters have the schedule on the frig with 7 games highlighted. Look forward to seeing duffman and tdt again and looking forward to meeting new friends before, during, and after the game. And finsleft, that is an awsome pic isn't it, having it in our avitar doesn't do it justice. GO JOHNNIES!!!!! ps anybody else check out the UST recruiting video? litte bit of a jab at SJU, but with the awesome stats they talk about at UST why would you want to play for Gag's? ;D
