Average ACT scores for incoming freshman at both schools for those who care...St.olaf is soooo much smarter....too bad I was probably responsible for bringing that average down.   :'(

Sweet!  I wonder what the difference would be between STO and SJU if there was a Hamm's ACT?

Hahha 10-7 over Hot Carleton...haha...cant wait to rush the SJU field with the Ole faithful on Sat....

You hit the nail on the head.

SJU's 3 point road win over 2-2 Carleton is much more impressive than Olaf's 7 point home win over 1-3 Luther which required a 17 point 4th quarter from the Oles to overcome a 10-6 halftime deficit!

Yes SJU came from behind against Carleton, however Carleton was 4-6 last year Luther was 2-8.

Since you Ole's come from such a strong academic tradition, let's talk some recent history, shall we?

2006 St Olaf is 5-0 with a 17pt win being their closest game thus far. SJU comes into Northfield also 5-0 with a 2pt win and a 4pt win. SJU wins 37-21

2005 St. Olaf comes to Collegeville 7-0 with a 2pt win over Bethel being their closest game, all other wins by at least 17 pts. SJU comes in 8-0 including a 4 pt win and a 7 pt win. SJU wins 63-9

Yes, Olaf won the mudbowl in 2004 by 2 pts, but this year's seniors were Freshmen then and I doubt many if any had significant playing time in that game.

Combined scores over the past 2 years: SJU 100  St. Olaf 30.

Prediction: I'll take the averages and SJU wins 50-15.

If we are going by averages, looks like the oles may have started an average of winning every three years... 2001, 2004, 2007??   Its time.
Um YA YA!

But...but...but...Carleton is N/A! How do you compare a school that's N/A!? They must be stoopud.
Nice day, huh?

Since I'm not going to get the +25 from AO, does anyone want to take a guess at the over/under on the number of Ole posters still left next week?
Everyday is payday in paradise.

Dude, you can't "start" an average at some indiscriminate point in time! Averages, by definition, take into account as much data as possible. So yes, KR's average is just as ridiculous as yours. And hell, I'll throw in one of my own: STO's average boasting per MIAC title is the highest in the conference.
Nice day, huh?

You can make arguments about what school is more competitive to get in to, however nothing about the final product can be divulged from these stats.

Great post, KR. I'll tack on one more flaw with this section: using ACT/SAT/GPA assumes that all high schools measure the same. My H.S. didn't have AP classes, so my potential GPA was capped at 4.0 while some people can come traipsing into college with GPAs near 5.

Actually, that's not entirely true. Unless you go all the way back to 1979*, which would predate this website, the denominator in the fraction of boasting/(MIAC titles) is 0. As such, it is not a legal fraction as the denominator cannot be 0. Such a fraction is mathematically defined as "undefined" or meaningless.

I like that, since 1979, St Olaf's boasting is meaningless ;D

*the 1979 MIAC Football title was a 4-way tie between Concordia, SJU, UST and St Olaf. In 1978 Concordia and St Olaf tied. In 1935 St. Olaf tied with SJU and Gustavus. In 1930 St Olaf and UST tied. The last and only time St Olaf won an outright MIAC football title was 1923. My grandpa turned 2 that year.
**So if we count only outright titles, Olaf's boasting has been meaningless since 1923 :D

Stanbob;
Over/under of Ole posters next week by day:
Monday: 4 all b*tching about the officiating and everything SJU got away with.
Tuesday: 1 admitting defeat and telling us all to watch out for next year
Weds: 1 who missed Monday here to complain about the refs
Thurs: 0
Friday: 0

My school had AP classes, but they were applied to the 4.0 scale just the same. With a 5.0 scale for AP classes, my 3.73 would have been a 4.6. I guess it all turned out all right.

You cannot compare ACT/SAT test scores for schools as a completely accurate measure of the quality of students.  Testing is under heavy fire by educators since it tends to favor affluent white students.  Certain student groups traditionally do not do well in testing.  The affluence allows students that have money to pay for tutoring.  The University system is heavily flawed, and it is almost impossible to decipher which school has better students unless you use primary sources.  It is time to move from this discussion.

Thanks for the invite TDT.  I am never really sure how genuine SJU fans are, but I do appreciate the invite.  I grew up going to games in where they had armed guards protecting the locker room and escorting groups to the bus so spending time with other school's fans was recipe for disaster.  I will be helping out with fundraising for cancer research this weekend.

As for the game, I think this is St. Olaf's best team in years.  Penz is a great QB that does not seem to lose games.  He also has a strong group of receivers with good RBs in the backfield.  It is hard to argue with Gant, Schmeising, Endsley, Higgins, the St. Johns etc...  I am also very impressed with Coach McCarthy's work with the defense.  Before anyone rips me for that comment I would like to point out some of the previous years work on defense.  St. Olaf can win this game, but they have to stay focused and minimize the mistakes.  Penalties are going to kill Olaf in a game this year, and it could be this one.  I am fine with a pass interference if you are beat deep or a hustle penalty, but they should not be taking stupid frustration penalties.  St. Olaf can win this game, but they need to play smart and to their level.

SJU fans are extremely genuine. We'll rip you posts on here like rabid wolverines, but in real-life we're harmless. Stop by the tailgate and I have no doubt even without bringing anything you will leave with a full belly and some free libations to boot!
I wish I could count the number of people I've bickered with on here only to meet up at a tailgate over a couple cold Hamm's and BS for hours.

Kurt Ramler ran the shovel pass to perfection. I distinctly remember that from the 95 and 96 seasons.

Can't we just all get along? We are the "village" of D3 football in America on this board. Where is Hillary Clinton when we need her? :P

Ole fans, you are cordially invited to join us for the Stiftungsfestivities this coming Saturday. The tailgate party is located above the scoreboard end of the field in the parking lot. We usually are rolling by 10:00 a.m. Since this is the Johnnie homecoming, parking may be more of a challenge. If you want to show up earlier, that is fine. A few of us are there by 9:00 a.m. Bring a culinary delight to share if you like along with the beverage of your choice. Kids are welcome, so long as they stay away from the jello shots and the koolaid. ;)
