I'm sure this will be on the news in Minnesota and elsewhere, but just saw it. Minnesota-Morris student killed by goalpost in game-ending celebration.

I pulled some video on the Minnesota Morris student, Rick Rose, who died today in the postgame celebrations following their OT defeat of Crown. Length: 1:06.

SJU has outperformed St. Olaf against common opponents and this doesn't even take into acocunt the fact that SJU's starters did not play in the 4th (and sometimes 3rd) quarter against Hamline, GAC, and Carleton. Teams that Meidt seemed set on "sending a message" against by leaving starters in ridiculously long.

Funny that you mention playing time.  In the games that you mentioned, the only one that the Ole starters played past the 3rd quarter was the Carleton game (starters were in for 1 series in the 4th).  Against both Hamline and Carleton the Johnnie starters were taken out at the beginning of the 4th and against GAC they stayed in until the last 3-4 minutes of the game.  Who was trying to send a message now?

It's asinine for us as fans to question how long a coach leaves a specific group of players in a game.  A coaches primary responsibility is to put his team in the best position to win week in and week out.  I have played in several games where the starters were left in during the 3rd and 4th quarters even though we were winning by a large margin.  This was not done to show-up, or send a message to the other team.  The starters were left in the game because they played like crap en route to that large lead.  They were left in until they began to execute consistently and correctly.  Meidter's responsibility is to make sure that his team is ready to come out and play at full speed week in and week out.  I was at each of the games where a message was supposedly being sent.  I can tell you that this was never the case.  Meidt was simply putting this team in the best possible position to compete in every game this season.

Maybe St. Olaf will run a fake punt to keep what will eventually be the game winning drive alive on Saturday.  Good luck Johnnies, It's gonna be a good one! ;)

Whoops, forgot the prereq. "long time reader, first time poster."  Actually I've posted in the past but I honestly can't remember any of my former screen names.

Very sad about the Morris student.  I can only imagine what his family is going through right now.

Retired Old Rat

Thanks Ryan.  Very sad.  Prayers for his family and friends.

Thanks for posting that Ryan...saw a blurb about it on ESPN, but didn't catch the story.  It's very sad and maybe will serve a lesson about taking down goalposts...but probably not.

olegold - They didn't play in the fourth quarter of the GAC game huh? So, when the score was 20-17, Meidter took out his starters early in the fourth and it was the backups who scored the last 2 touchdowns? Or maybe Luddy was drunk when he typed the box score when it said Wilsey threw 3 of 4 plays with under 5 on the clock in the fourth and took the last knee as time ran out. Or maybe my eyes were just deceiving me.

Good to have you posting, but please keep it relevant and on point.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

And, for what it's worth, Sofa King is back posting on the basketball boards. I don't know about the rest of you, but I miss him :)

Whoops, my bad.  Luddy wasn't the one drinking, I guess I was. haha

I suppose I can accept that...IF it was a Hamms, right Fins? :)

I wish.  Have you ever experienced "the blatzkrieg?"  If not, you should consider yourself lucky and never try it.

Let us hope so. It's a sad day on the Morris campus; If there is anything at the Dome on Friday regarding today's accident, I'll be sure to take some notes.

SJU/St Olaf: Who's driving from the cities to the game that morning? Is there someone I could carpool with? My personal gas allowance is shot after the SJU/CON game last weekend and I would prefer to find someone to carpool with (either me driving or riding along with) to the game. I will be pretty beat after the 5 games at the Dome on Friday.

Message me off list please.
