Nice work Royals!!  An edge was presented, the weather, and you took full advantage of it.  Good teams force their competition outside of their game plan.  With natures help you pommeld the red an white.  Congrats

Don't you hate posts like that? Way to go, you won, BUT, the weather.......

By the way, what does POMMELD mean?

I thought it was a compliment, Bethel took advantage of the situation presented.  Talk with Webster about  pommeld and pummeld.  I use him a lot since posting on this board.  ( Pat, spell check would be a nice addition)

Just something for the Royal fans to ponder to maybe get their hopes up for next week. If Wetzel can't play, it might make MUC's prep just a tad harder since they will have less film with which to study tendencies. MUC was winning big and seemingly invinceable in 2000 and 2003, and the Johnnies outscored them 31 - 17 combined.

If the weather is better next Saturday, I may even take in my second UWW/UMHB game of the year.

Oh, and JVF To know you is to love you.

Yup the Dutch got handled pretty well, but to illustrate the impact of the weather . . .

First half Total yards      BET - 225     CEN - 55

Boys and their toys plow the field:

Second half Total Yards      BET - 145    CEN - 172

"BUT the weather  . . . . "  is a legit statement.

Congrats to Bethel and good luck next week.

I fail to see how the weather is a factor. Both teams had to play in the same conditions. It definitely playe a role in BUs 6 fumbles (altho if Centrals "d" was on top of things they would have recovered more of them)  Those 2nd half yards for Cdntral were all in the 4th quarter.

The bottom line was that Bethel was able to contorl the ball. They had the ball over 41 minutes! Where was Central's D?  It was the4 same game plan that they used to beat SJU, and it is succesful because they have great RBs and a phenomenal O-line. Bethel's O-line is amazing....THATS how they get such domination in time of possession. It makes their RBs that much better.

Can someone tell me who has the final say as to the field being cleared in a case like this, is it the officials or the grounds crew? If the grounds crew, why wasn't the field cleared between quarters? If the officials, how bad does it have to be before they make a call? With turf fields they have to luxury to use plows & not put ruts into the field.

As this is an NCAA game (just being hosted by Central) it was the NCAA that made all of the calls yesterday.  Had a chance to talk with the Rep who was on hand (I think he was from Illinois Wesleyan) and he said that it was the NCAA's call to delay the game an hour and a half.  I would also believe it was the NCAA's call on what to do with the field.

Let's see how that O-line performs this Saturday against MUC's front 6.  I'm guessing not so well.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Through 3rd Qrt., Cen has 65 total yards!
After BU goes up 27-7,  Central gains over 100 yards and I see several subs for BU via of tackling stats!
Not sure field or "weather" is a legit statement at all!!

Pat Coleman

The halftime plowing had no effect on Central's offense -- as was already noted, the third-quarter offense for Central was non-existent.

The field was plowed before the first half as well.

even with the non-effect of the plowing, the point still stands that Central probably would have scored a few more times if the game were played on a sunny 80 degree day.  Let's hope for some more frosty conditions in Alliance next Saturday.

Dusty,
Dang man, was still hoping SJU would have been here instead of BU, and we could have had those burgers&brauts and catch up on that beer you owe me! I hope Wentzel(sp) is alright to play, as i'm sure that might be the next reason Mount beat someone in the National semi final!

mtman;  I'll be more than happy to deliver on that bet one of these years....

It's time for the witch doctor to step forward and administer the milky white substance to Ben Wetzell's shoulder....

I can forsee Coach Johnson installing BW as a starting running back and the backup QB in the starting QB position...

It's "pummeled."  It means to beat with the fists.  "Pommeled" is also ok.  I'll be pulling for Bethel this weekend but I think they'll be familiar with the term by game's end.  No team is unstoppable but MUC is close.  They'll watch tape and they will be sure to make short work of Flannery and BU's running game if that's all BU brings to the table.  Actually, there is a positive from Wetzel's injury.  Like one poster on here said, there will be no film of the backup.  If Johnson has a drop back style passer on the roster who can do the quick dink passes and throw long when necessary, perhaps using such a guy would be of benefit to BU even if Wetzel were healthy.

Keep it close with MUC and MUC will probably panic.  Remember, they have not been in a close game all year long.  In 2000, they had never been in a close game all year long and at halftime it was 7-7 or something like that.  Being in close games all year long is an asset come playoff time.  In 2000, it was obvious to me that the teams MUC had played were not of the caliber of SJU even though SJU had one loss.  Except for MUC which is in a different class altogether, I think the east and the south and the north are probably weaker overall than the west.   BU are the west champs so that says a lot and BU should consider all of the great programs that they were better than this year and whom they are now representing (Linfield, SJU, Central, Redlands, Whitworth, UW conference, etc).  That should add at least some confidence.  I think you'll find the MUC fans very welcoming and hospitable and nice.  From the head coach on down, that program is first rate.  The fans do get fired up about their team and coaches and they have reason to do so; be prepared for some good smack.   That said, I'd like nothing better than to see them get knocked off.

Congratulations to BU for winning the West-- the MIAC can be proud once again, as can the whole West region-- we still have 2 of the remaining 4 teams!

(And given BU's close calls this year, it shows exactly how much parity there is here-- given a few breaks, that could have been Concordia/SJU/St. Olaf/Central in Alliance on Saturday.  But Bethel got it done when and where it counted, and they deserve to represent the West).

I would love to see BU knock off the Raiders, and while I have my doubts that this can happen (especially if Wetzell is on the sideline), BU is really good at playing to their opponent's level-- while this burned them against BVU, it certainly helped against their other close calls this year.  If they can do it against MUC, well, stranger things have happened...

But I will say their process of defeating the demons in conquering SJU over the past 10 years will only help them in Alliance-- they need to take the same pride and energy to Ohio as they do to Collegeville, and I think they can make a game of it.  But if they let those old SJU-style demons get to them (read: fumbling the ball while diving over the SJU goal line....), the Raiders will undoubtedly make them pay.   And teams don't often come from behind against MUC- they get you down and use the killer instinct to put you away.

So go MIAC!

Congratulations to Bethel on your win yesterday under those brutal playing conditions.

As Chewey said, you represent all the teams of the west now, so go do us proud.

Nice job calling the game, Pat and OAS. We enjoyed listening to you and could almost feel the cold.

So, retagent has been giving me a little grief lately, and I saw him in town and we kinda got into it. Someone had a video camera and put it on You Tube. I'll admit retagent has a lot of training in hand to hand and pretty much took it to me. I'm in red, retagent is in blue.
