Kersten's columns are as predictable - and nearly as well-written - as Sid's annual The Gophers Are Going to the Rose Bowl predictions. She's also probably still mad that Latin's not used at Mass.

Mount has field/sprint turf now right? So the snow there shouldn't turn the field into a Pittsburgh-type debacle or anything.

Today let us remember our Soldiers and Sailors who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor and those who survived the attack in our prayers and thoughts.

What's with the Lion being the default mascot anyway?  I have no idea what a Gustie should look like, but a Royal should look something like this:

+k for that one.  I almost fell out of my chair laughing at that suggestion.

In other news, we finally know what a Johnnie is:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's kind of a gray area in my opinion when it comes to dominating DIII athletes/teams. At what point does it become a question of "why aren't these guys playing at a higher level?" Wartburg wrestling in Iowa I think is another example of that. Their lineup is made up of guys who in a lot of people's opinions could wrestle for a lot of bigger schools.

I understand why kids go to DIII schools, I went to Central obviously but do these guys have the opportunity to play at a higher level? I'm guessing that they were maybe too small or not fast enough for some schools but sometimes you have to wonder why they didn't at least try.

I can see the other side of the argument with academics and the comfort of a small school but I guess maybe my argument becomes are some DIII athletes almost too good for this level?? It's kind of a catch 22. Am I talking crazy or does anyone else kind of see where I'm going with it?

The whole "Mount Union should be forced into a different level" argument is one that makes me want to laugh and pull out my hair all at the same time. Last time I checked, what division you play in is not linked to your level of success. If that was the case, should the Miami Dolphins be forced out of the NFL and have to join a college conference? Should the Timberwolves join the MIAC? ;) As for the "too good for this level" argument, how about instead of athletic talent, we look at scholastic talent? Should really smart kids only be allowed to attend certain schools? "Sure kid, you might want to be a mechanic, but with an IQ of 180, you have to attend ______ College/University, no voc tech for you!!" The choice ultimately lies with the student...as it should! 8)

I think you were missing the fact that I was kind of throwing that question out for discussion. I never said anything about not allowing anyone to do anything. I'll rephrase a little bit I guess.

If an athlete is tearing up DIII do some of you ever find yourselves thinking why isn't this kid playing up a level? Are they underachieving for their talent level?

I guess it's kind of a dumb thought to even have, obviously people go to DIII for their own reasons but I guess it's kind of like that team that tears up the "B" rec league but won't play in the "A" league ever because they don't want to lose.

I'll concede that my argument is pretty weak, there's nothing to say who can or cannot go to a DIII school to participate in whatever. Once again, I'm just throwing it out there for discussion, not saying kids shouldn't be allowed to do anything...

And in the interest of full disclosure, I have been a Dolphins fan since 1967 when Bob Griese was a rookie.

I think a lot of SJU fans were wondering why a certain receiver from 2000-2003 wasn't playing at a higher level, and were thankful he didn't go up.

I remember discussion about that when Devean George was at Augsburg, when he was the best college player in the state (Gophers' Quincy Lewis was probably second-best. Miles Tarver was 345th best). I think what happens is that a lot of the standout college guys at the lower levels aren't highly recruited out of high school by the bigger colleges. For whatever reason, size, speed, just overlooked, they end up at a smaller school. It's only when they get to college, and perhaps develop even more physically, that they really start to dominate and you start wondering why they're not playing at a different level. Like Devean, I think he grew like five inches or something once he got to augsburg. And isn't it a pain to transfer up a division? Do you still have to sit out a year? Plus just leaving the place you've grown comfortable. That surely keeps a lot of players who could go up from doing so.

I also think that some really good athletes do not get noticed as they don't attend the right camp or get enough good press so that the bigger schools do not know about them. So when the time comes to go to school it may be a thing that they choose who has noticed them.

We also can't underestimate the influence/power of their high school coach. The high school coach controls everything from their amount of playing time to whether or not college coaches are contacted. There are probably some guys at a D3 level that were not starters in high school but due to a change in coaches, system and physical/mental maturity did really well in college.
